Relative Vessel Motion Tracking using Sensor Fusion, Aruco Markers, and MRU Sensors

2017

This paper presents a novel approach for estimating the relative motion between two moving offshore vessels. The method is based on a sensor fusion algorithm including a vision system and two motion reference units (MRUs). The vision system makes use of the open-source computer vision library OpenCV and a cube with Aruco markers placed onto each of the cube sides. The Extended Quaternion Kalman Filter (EQKF) is used for bad pose rejection for the vision system. The presented sensor fusion algorithm is based on the Indirect Feedforward Kalman Filter for error estimation. The system is self-calibrating in the sense that the Aruco cube can be placed in an arbitrary location on the secondary ve…

How much should customers be compensated for interruptions in the drinking water supply?

2017

Water supply interruptions directly affect customers, and customers should be compensated accordingly. However, few water regulators have applied compensation policies given the difficulty of estimating the economic value of compensation to customers. In this study, a pioneering approach based on the concept of shadow prices is proposed to determine the compensation that customers should receive for unplanned water interruptions. The Chilean water industry was selected as a case study because there is an ongoing policy discussion between the use of penalties or compensation as an incentive to prevent water supply interruptions. The estimated results indicate that for 2014, the value of comp…

Service Shutdowns and Compensation: Cash Refunds or Vouchers?

2021

Government mandated shutdowns in response to the COVID-19 pandemic have led to a vast number of service cancellations and a heated debate on compensation policies. Service providers pushed for vouchers as a means of compensation, whereas customers demand cash refunds or generous vouchers that compensate for postponed service. Regulators, at the same time, insist that customers must be granted the right to be reimbursed in money. To address the debate, this paper develops an analytical framework to study the profitability and efficiency of different compensation policies following shutdown. Surprisingly, we find that the voucher-only policy dominates the hybrid policy that offers customers t…

Fast solution of radial distribution networks with automated compensation and reconfiguration

2000

Abstract Optimal operation of radial distribution networks with automated compensation and reconfiguration requires the solution of a combinatorial optimisation problem, since the variables are the on/off status of capacitor banks and the open/close status of tie-switches. The solution approaches recently proposed use iterative algorithms such as genetic algorithms, simulated annealing and tabu search, for which the network needs to be solved in different configurations and at different compensation levels. The aim of this evaluation is that of attributing a quality index to each solution so that all the solutions can be suitably ordered. In an automated network, any configuration can be ob…

Setpoints compensation in industrial processes via multirate output feedback control

2013

This paper investigates the setpoints compensation for a class of complex industrial processes. Plants at the device layer are controlled by the local regulation controllers, and a multirate output feedback control approach for setpoint compensation is proposed such that the subsystems can reach the dynamically changed setpoints and the given economic objective can also be tracked via certain economic performance index (EPI). First, a sampled-data multivariable direct output feedback proportional integral (PI) controller is designed to regulate the performance of the subsystems. Second, the outputs and control inputs of the plants at the device layer are sampled at operation layer sampling …

Advances in Strain Gauge Measurement on Composite Materials

2010

This article gives an overview on the application of strain gauge techniques to the analysis of the strains in composite materials. The orthotropic behaviour of the composite influences the performance of strain gauges that are calibrated for use on isotropic materials. The article considers therefore the typical topics of the strain gauge technology applied to composites with particular reference to the compensation of thermal output, the measurement of the coefficients of thermal expansion, the determination of the strain and stress state, the influence of the misalignment error, the reinforcement effect, the determination of the stress intensification factor, the analysis of residual str…

Video Indexing Using MPEG Motion Compensation Vectors

2003

In the last years a lot of work has been done on color, textural, structural and semantic indexing of "content-based" video databases. Motion-based video indexing has been less explored, with approaches generally based on the analysis of optical flows. Compressed videos require the decompression of the sequences and the computation of optical flows, two steps computationally heavy. In this paper we propose some methods to index videos by motion features (mainly related to camera motion) and by motion-based spatial segmentation of frames, in a fully automatic way. Our idea is to use MPEG motion vectors as an alternative to optical flows. Their extraction is very simple and fast; it doesn't r…

Video indexing using optical flow field

2002

The increasing development of advanced multimedia applications requires new technologies for organizing and retrieving by content databases of digital video. Several content based features (color, texture, motion, etc.) are needed to perform a reliable content based retrieval. We present a method for automatic motion based video indexing and retrieval. A prototypal system has been developed to prove the validity of our approach. Our system automatically splits a video into a sequence of shots, extracts a few representative frames (said r-frames) from each shot and computes some motion based features related to the optical flow field. Motion based queries are then performed either in a quali…
