When a compliance without pressure strategy fails due to a minority dissenter: A case of “behavioral conversion”
1988
While a strategy of compliance without pressure (Joule, 1987) had the effect of inducing almost all of a group of smoking subjects to stop smoking first for 18 hours then for 3 days, simply observing someone (an accomplice) break his or her own initial agreement to abstain from smoking for 18 hours was enough to bring about a substantial reduction in the willingness of other subjects to later abstain for 3 days. However, subjects did not follow the lead of the accomplice immediately, and persisted in their agreement to abstain for 18 hours. This pattern of indirect, but not direct influence, suggests that there may be a type of minority influence at work here that represents a sort of behav…
Selfless or Selfish? The Impact of Message Framing and Egoistic Motivation on Narcissists’ Compliance with Preventive Health Behaviors during COVID-19
2021
COVID-19 is one of the greatest international health crises in recent years. Due to the highly contagious nature of the virus, the World Health Organization has recommended that people comply with a set of preventive measures to reduce the infection rate (e.g., social distancing, wearing a face mask, thorough personal hygiene). However, people typically differ in the extent to which they are willing to comply with such recommendations, as they imply certain personal restrictions. The present study aimed to investigate whether narcissism levels and message framing strategies affect individuals’ willingness to accept personal restrictions and, consequently, comply with a set of preventive hea…
The digital outcry: What incites participation behavior in an online firestorm?
2017
Brands, celebrities, or politicians are increasingly facing enormous online outrages in response to moral misconducts. These online firestorms are characterized by high message volume, indignant tonality, and negative opinion climate. Based on the concept of moral panics, this article analyzes why people join online firestorms. We argue that participation behavior is driven by a moral compass and a desire for social recognition. Results of an experiment and a content analysis of user comments show that a higher number of participants decreases users’ willingness to participate but fosters compliance with the prevalent opinion and tonality of the comments. We also observe that a higher mora…
Definition, Tasks and Legal Nature of the Compliance Function
2015
This chapter addresses the compliance function under art. 46, para. 1 of the Solvency II Directive. The first items to be addressed here are the normative bases of compliance under the insurance supervisory regime and its conceptual content. Then, the tasks and relevant requirements for compliance under the insurance supervisory regime are identified. The chapter concludes by examining the function of compliance under the insurance supervisory regime of the Solvency II system.
[Perception of dyspnea and treatment adherence in asthmatic patients].
2008
OBJECTIVE: The majority of studies show that treatment adherence in chronic diseases such as asthma does not exceed 50%. Although the reasons may vary, it is clear that lack of treatment adherence is a determining factor in poor disease control. An association has also been observed between lack of perception of dyspnea and difficult-to-control asthma and with the occurrence of fatal or near-fatal asthma attacks. In this study we therefore attempted to demonstrate that one of the reasons that asthmatic patients do not adhere to treatment is a failure to perceive dyspnea associated with bronchial obstruction. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed 2 groups of patients with moderate persistent ast…
Adaptation of TECCU App Based on Patients´ Perceptions for the Telemonitoring of Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Qualitative Study Using Focus Groups
2020
Background: Despite the continuous adaptation of eHealth systems for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a significant disconnection persists between users and developers. Since non-adherence remains high, it is necessary to better understand the patients&rsquo
Respiratory mechanics measured by forced oscillations during mechanical ventilation through a tracheal tube
2011
The forced oscillation technique (FOT) allows the measurement of respiratory mechanics in the intensive care setting. The aim of this study was to compare the FOT with a reference method during mechanical ventilation through a tracheal tube. The respiratory impedance spectra were measured by FOT in nine anaesthetized pigs, and resistance and compliance were estimated on the basis of a linear resistance-compliance inertance model. In comparison, resistance and compliance were quantified by the multiple linear regression analysis (LSF) of conventional ventilator waveforms to the equation of motion. The resistance of the sample was found to range from 6 to 21 cmH(2)O s l(-1) and the compliance…

La Convención de Palermo (UNTOC) y la responsabilidad derivada de delitos de las personas jurídicas: itinerarios e intersecciones del ordenamiento it…
2022
Both the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime (UNTOC: signed in December 2000 in Palermo) and the Delegation Law no. 300/2000, with its corresponding Legislative Decree no. 231/2001, which jointly introduced in Italy the liability arising from crime for collective entities, mark two "paradigm shifts" for the criminal system. The contribution focuses on the overall value of the two legislative innovations examined in the evolution of criminal law, respectively at the international level and in the Italian context. The interest in analysing their respective contributions is further stimulated by the observation that the two areas, although autonomous, present a sign…
