Distribution patterns of particulate trace metals in the water column and nepheloid layer of the Gulf of Riga.
2004
The dynamics (fate) of trace metals in suspended particulate matter within the Gulf of Riga has not yet been adequately addressed in the scientific literature. Therefore, during a two year period (2001-2002) samples of suspended particulate matter and surface sediments for trace metal analysis were collected in the Gulf of Riga and the Daugava river, and these data were combined with background information from the national marine monitoring program in Latvia. This paper presents a descriptive study of solid phase trace metals (aluminium, iron, cadmium, chromium, copper, manganese, nickel, lead and zinc) dynamics and their spatial distribution within the Gulf of Riga based on Principal Comp…
Costruire con l’acqua: nuovi paradigmi dell’architettura sostenibile Building with water: new standards of sustainable architecture
2017
Within an increasingly consolidated architectural practice aiming at environmental sustainability and energy self-sufficiency, the article reports international research and experiments carried out on water-architecture. Furthermore, it highlights how, starting f…
Efficient analysis of in-line waveguide filters and frequency-selective surfaces with stepped holes
2003
This paper presents a novel method for the analysis of large classes of microwave and mm-wave passive components, including in-line waveguide filters, single- and multi-layer frequency selective surfaces, and open-ended waveguide array antennas. This method is based on the segmentation technique, which permits us to reduce complex components to cascaded waveguide step discontinuities, which are separately characterized through their generalized impedance matrices, as calculated by the integral equation (IE) technique and the boundary integral-resonant mode expansion (BI-RME) method. Some examples demonstrate the flexibility and efficiency of the IE/BI-RME method, and its utility in investig…
Performance of electro-optical plasmonic ring resonators at telecom wavelengths
2012
International audience; In this work we report on the characteristics of an electro-optical dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide ring resonator. By doping the dielectric host matrix with an electro-optical material and designing an appropriate set of planar electrodes, we measured a 16% relative change of transmission upon application of a controlled electric field. We have analyzed the temporal response of the device and conclude that electrostriction of the host matrix is playing a dominating role in the transmission response.
Efficient excitation of dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguide modes at telecommunication wavelengths
2008
International audience; The excitation of surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) waveguide modes in subwavelength dielectric ridges deposited on a thin gold film has been characterized and optimized at telecommunication wavelengths. The experimental data on the electromagnetic mode structure obtained using scanning near-field optical microscopy have been directly compared to full vectorial three-dimensional finite element method simulations. Two excitation geometries have been investigated where SPPs are excited outside or inside the dielectric tapered region adjoint to the waveguide. The dependence of the efficiency of the SPP guided mode excitation on the taper opening angle has been measured an…
Post-search query modeling in federated web scenario
2014
As opposed to query reformulation oriented towards changes made by a user to specify the information need more precisely, a post-search query modeling is a technique of exploiting syntax variation of gradually extended query which depending on some other factors like e.g. the resource, database or the key word alignment, facilitates the searching process. The study into modeling query submitted to some search engines that utilize different translation semantic paradigms is motivated by a real-world's challenges to retrieve heterogeneous textual documents from the web. For a couple of language pairs, we develop a user-centered framework for imposing the Hidden Web traffic optimization. In li…
Application of daily rainfall principal component analysis to the assessment of the rainy season characteristics in Senegal
2003
The interannual variability of the onset and cessation dates of the rainy season (RS) in Senegal is analyzed over the 43 yr period 1950-1992, using daily rainfall data for 34 stations. The use of principal component analysis, based on rainfall only, is explored to identify aggregate, regional indexes for the onset and cessation of the rains. The minimum and maximum values of the cumula- tive scores of principal component 1, for each year, are used to locate the onset and cessation dates, respectively. Very distinct spatial rainfall patterns are found before and after the onset/cessation dates. Mean dates compare favorably with those based on other definitions, though our method is not meant…
1H NMR Spectroscopy with Multivariate Statistical Analysis as a Tool for a Rapid Screening of the Molecular Changes Occurring During Micro-Oxygenatio…
2008
A red wine from Aglianico vine was subjected to a micro-oxygenation procedure for five weeks. The wine was weekly sampled together with a non micro-oxygenated control and extracted with di-ethyl-ether in order to simplify NMR analyses. In fact, 1 H NMR spectra of the whole wine samples were dominated by water and ethanol signals which pre- vented visibility of the resonances generated by the less concentrated wine components. The 1 H NMR analyses of the di- ethyl-ether extracts revealed an increase of the amount of oxygen-containing materials. Such increase was attributed to a wine ageing process which resulted, hence, fastened by application of micro-oxygenation.
Multivariate Methods Based Soft Measurement for Wine Quality Evaluation
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: Abstract and Applied Analysis. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/740754 Open Access Soft measurement is a new, developing, and promising industry technology and has been widely used in the industry nowadays. This technology plays a significant role especially in the case where some key variables are difficult to be measured by traditional measurement methods. In this paper, the quality of the wine is evaluated given the wine physicochemical indexes according to multivariate methods based soft measurement. The multivariate methods used in this paper include ordinary least squares regression (OLSR), principal c…
Elemental fingerprint of wines from the protected designation of origin Valencia
2009
Abstract Inductively coupled plasma optical emission (ICP-OES), in combination with different chemometric approaches, has been used to verify the origin of different red wine samples from Utiel-Requena, Jumilla, Yecla and Valencia protected designation of origin (PDO). The ability of multivariate analysis methods, such as hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), principal component analysis (PCA), classification and regression trees (CARTs) and discriminant analysis (DA), to achieve wine classification from their elemental contents has been investigated. The calculations were performed using 38 variables (contents of Al, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cu, Dy, Er, Eu, Fe, Gd, Ho, K, La, Li, Lu, Mg,…
