Atlas construction and image analysis using statistical cardiac models
2010
International audience; This paper presents a brief overview of current trends in the construction of population and multi-modal heart atlases in our group and their application to atlas-based cardiac image analysis. The technical challenges around the construction of these atlases are organized around two main axes: groupwise image registration of anatomical, motion and fiber images and construction of statistical shape models. Application-wise, this paper focuses on the extraction of atlas-based biomarkers for the detection of local shape or motion abnormalities, addressing several cardiac applications where the extracted information is used to study and grade different pathologies. The p…
Abnormal Lipopigments and Lysosomal Residual Bodies in Metachromatic Leukodystrophy
1990
Ultrastructurally, metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is marked by characteristic features such as herringbone, prismatic and tufaceous patterns which are typically encountered within oligodendrocytes of the central nervous system (CNS) and in Schwann cells (PNS). These patterns can be documented in late infantile, juvenile, and adult forms. In the latter, aging of the ailing individual adds another component, the accumulation of lipopigments which are marked by an opaque supposedly lipid droplet and a granular component. While MLD-specific lysosomal residual bodies occur in myelinforming cells, lipopigments accrue in neurons and to a lesser degree in astrocytes. MLD represents a unique exa…
The Level of Mortality in Insured Populations
2018
In the actuarial field, life tables are used in reserving and pricing processes. They are commonly built from aggregate data and incorporate margins as a prudent measure to ensure the insurance company’s viability. Solvency II requires insurance companies to calculate technical provisions using best-estimate assumptions for future experience (mortality, expenses, lapses, etc) to separate (i) the risk-free component from (ii) adverse deviation of claims. Nowadays, however, the methods used by insurance companies (in most countries, included Spain) do not guarantee that these components can be separated. Many companies build their own tables from general insured population life tables, assumi…
Sperm kinematics and morphometric subpopulations analysis with CASA systems: a review
2019
Sperm kinematics and morphometric subpopulations analysis with CASA systems: a review. The subjective evaluation of seminal quality has given way to the use of objective assessment techniques by CASA technology (computer-assisted semen analysis). The application of principal components (PC) and clustering methods to reveal subpopulations of spermatozoa is a powerful tool to evaluate raw semen and processed cell suspensions, but not many researchers are aware of the technique. PC analysis is a multivariate statistical method that reduces the number of variables used in subsequent calculations used to describe the data. By integrating the original variables according to their coherence in a d…

Donor Exposures in Recipients of Pooled Platelet Concentrates: a Case-Study in Arithmetic, Logic, "Expert Opinion", and the "Peer Review" Proc…
2013
Advocacy for single-donor (rather than pooled) platelets has been based on the absolute increase in the risk of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) from pooled (rather than single-donor) platelets in the population of platelet transfusion recipients. A recent study published in a prestigious medical journal advocated for pooled (rather than single-donor) platelets based on the relative increase in the risk of TTIs from pooled (rather than single-donor) platelets in patients transfused with any blood component. If this policy recommendation for use of pooled (rather than single-donor) platelets were followed in the US, there would be an annual increase in the risk of TTIs by 15-20 reci…
Analysis of the multipactor effect in microwave waveguides and transmission lines
2017
Electron-deficient trifluoromethyl-substituted sub-components affect the properties of M4L4 tetrahedral cages
2017
Two supramolecular tetrahedral cages based on a new electron-deficient trifluoromethyl-substituted pyridylimine ligand are synthesised by sub-component self-assembly. Their structures are characterised by NMR und UV-Vis spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The iron(II) complex shows host–guest chemistry, complex-to-complex transformations and novel electronic properties. peerReviewed
Tiešsaistes specializētas datorspēļu spēlētāju vārdnīcas projekts
2015
Application of Electronic Nose for Evaluation of Wastewater Treatment Process Effects at Full-Scale WWTP
2019
This paper presents the results of studies aiming at the assessment and classification of wastewater using an electronic nose. During the experiment, an attempt was made to classify the medium based on an analysis of signals from a gas sensor array, the intensity of which depended on the levels of volatile compounds in the headspace gas mixture above the wastewater table. The research involved samples collected from the mechanical and biological treatment devices of a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), as well as wastewater analysis. The measurements were carried out with a metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) gas sensor array, when coupled with a computing unit (e.g., a computer with…
Removing ocular artifacts from magnetoencephalographic data on naturalistic reading of continuous texts
2022
Naturalistic reading paradigms and stimuli consisting of long continuous texts are essential for characterizing the cortical basis of reading. Due to the highly dynamic nature of the reading process, electrophysiological brain imaging methods with high spatial and temporal resolution, such as magnetoencephalography (MEG), are ideal for tracking them. However, as electrophysiological recordings are sensitive to electromagnetic artifacts, data recorded during naturalistic reading is confounded by ocular artifacts. In this study, we evaluate two different pipelines for removing ocular artifacts from MEG data collected during continuous, naturalistic reading, with the focus on saccades and blin…
