Background An understanding of the natural history of unruptured intracranial aneurysms (IAs) has always played a critical role in presurgical or endovascular planning, to avoid possibly fatal events. Size, shape, morphology, and location are known risk factors for rupture of an aneurysm, but morphologic parameters alone may not be sufficient to perform proper rupture risk stratification. Fast Isolation by AFLP of Sequences Containing Repeats

Fast isolation by AFLP of sequences containing repeats (FIASCO) is a rapid and simple method for separating microsatellite-containing DNA fragments from genomic DNA de novo. The method takes the advantage of the amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) technique that relies on effective digestion-ligation reaction. The repeat-containing fragments are selectively hybridized to biotinylated probes and harvested by streptavidin-coated magnetic beads. The enriched microsatellite-containing fragments can be cloned and sequenced to yield a variety of microsatellite loci for applications in many different fields in molecular genetics.

Computational fluid dynamics simulation to evaluate aortic coarctation gradient with contrast-enhanced CT

Coarctation of aorta (CoA) is a narrowing of the aorta leading to a pressure gradient (Delta P) across the coarctation, increased afterload and reduced peripheral perfusion pressures. Indication to invasive treatment is based on values of maximal (systolic) trans-coarctation Delta P. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) approach is herein presented for the non-invasive haemodynamic assessment of Delta P across CoA. Patient-specific CFD simulations were created from contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) and appropriate flow boundary conditions. Radiation transmission data for radionuclides and materials relevant to brachytherapy facility shielding

To address the limited availability of radiation shielding data for brachytherapy as well as some disparity in existing data, Monte Carlo simulation was used to generate radiation transmission data for 60Co, 137CS, 198Au, 192Ir 169Yb, 170Tm, 131Cs, 125I, and 103pd photons through concrete, stainless steel, lead, as well as lead glass and baryte concrete. Abstract In this work, the accuracy of the implementation of the Macro Monte Carlo electron dose calculation algorithm into the radiation therapy treatment planning system Eclipse is evaluated. This implementation – called eMC – uses a particle source based on the Rotterdam Initial Phase-Space model.
