Towards semantic modelling of cultural historical data.
2010
In this paper a practical method is presented for creating documentation of cultural historical targets using an event-centric core ontology. By using semantic documentation templates and an XML-based query language, a domain specific documentation model can be created and flexible user interfaces can be built easily for accessing and editing the documentation. Keywords. ontologies, cultural historical documentation, information retrieval peerReviewed
Temporal Differences in Participation Modes in Video-Based Blended Learning Practice
2014
In traditionally organized education, the education provider also determines the teaching schedules. Education in accordance with the blended model and based on videos can be realized, when so wished, in such a way that the student will be free to decide about his/her time use. In this kind of environment students can still study in accordance with the proposed pedagogical model at a pace determined by lecture sessions so that the previous lecture is always seen before the next face-toface teaching session. Study can also completely adapted to one's own pace. In this case, the student watches the lecture videos before an exam, not worrying about the pace of face-to-face teaching. This resea…
New Metropolitan Perspectives Transition with Resilience for Evolutionary Development
2023
This open access book conveys attention to the theme of transition towards resilience and sustainability and its evolutionary perspective that emphasizes the complexity and uncertainty that governments and society are called to address in response to the ongoing challenges. "New Metropolitan Perspective Post COVID Dynamics: Green and Digital Transition, between Metropolitan and Return to Villages’ Perspectives”, 25–27 May 2022, Reggio Calabria, Italy. The papers included in the book are grouped around the following main topics: the envisaged transition towards resilience and sustainability; the relevance of the planning dimension for defining sustainable development pathways and managing co…

Hypervisor-Based White Listing of Executables
2019
We describe an efficient system for ensuring code integrity of an operating system (OS), both its own code and application code. The proposed system can protect from an attacker who has full control over the OS kernel. An evaluation of the system's performance suggests the induced overhead is negligible. peerReviewed
Developing an evaluation framework for identifying globally shared and locally specific requirements for the design and use of educational technology
2015
This paper presents a preliminary evaluation framework for identifying globally shared and locally specific requirements for the design and use of educational technology. The framework was developed initially from a literature review, and subsequently further refined in international collaboration between Chile, Finland, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates. It consists of three partially overlapping parts: I) Education, teaching and learning; II) Culture and society; and III) Design and use of technological learning solutions. In addition to providing an evaluation tool for designers and researchers, the framework can support educators’ and student teachers’ cultural…
Associations of Classroom Design and Classroom-Based Physical Activity with Behavioral and Emotional Engagement among Primary School Students
2021
Educational reforms worldwide have resulted in schools increasingly incorporating open and flexible classroom designs. Open learning spaces may contribute to a student’s behavioral and emotional school engagement directly and by facilitating classroom-based physical activity (CPA). We investigated the associations between accelerometer-assessed CPA and student ratings of task-focused behavior and attitude towards school as indicators for behavioral and emotional engagement, respectively, with the associations of gender, grade, and classroom design on CPA among 206 3rd and 5th grade students in open learning spaces and conventional classrooms. Structural equation modelling showed open classr…
The connection between forms of guidance for inquiry-based learning and the communicative approaches applied : a case study in the context of pre-ser…
2019
Recent research has argued that inquiry-based science learning should be guided by providing the learners with support. The research on guidance for inquiry-based learning has concentrated on how providing guidance affects learning through inquiry. How guidance for inquiry-based learning could promote learning about inquiry (e.g. epistemic practices) is in need of exploration. A dialogic approach to classroom communication and pedagogical link-making offers possibilities for learners to acquire these practices. The focus of this paper is to analyse the role of different forms of guidance for inquiry-based learning on building the communicative approach applied in classrooms. The data for th…
Motivational predictors of students' participation in out-of-school learning activities and academic attainment in science : An application of the tr…
2018
Abstract Given the shortfall in students studying science, promotion of motivation and engagement in science education is a priority. The current study applied the trans-contextual model to study the motivational predictors of participation in science learning activities in secondary-school students . In a three-wave design, secondary-school students completed measures of perceived autonomy support, autonomous and controlled motivation, social-cognitive beliefs (attitudes, subjective norms, perceived control), intentions, and self-reported participation in out-of-school science learning activities. Five-weeks later, students self-reported their science learning activities. Students' science…
Open University and Zero-Advanced Students - Who the Students Are and Why They Don't Progress?
2020
In recent decades, the talk of lifelong and continuous learning has become an internationally prevailing trend. Lifelong learning has many meanings depending on the interests and the determinants. On the other hand, lifelong learning is understood in the context of adult education as the OECD's contribution to market-liberal social and economic governance. In this case, the main actor is the individual with responsibilities and duties to ensure social competitiveness. On the other hand, lifelong learning is defined by adult education, cultural democracy, narrowing educational disparities and cultural equality. In the ethos of lifelong learning and in the spirit of continuous education, many…
