Mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of nanostructured CNTs/SiC composites
2018
International audience; Dense SiC-based nanostructured composites reinforced by well-distributed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were elaborated for the first time by spark plasma sintering (SPS) without sintering additive. Microstructures of materials containing different amounts of CNTs – up to 8.0 vol% – were correlated with their mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. A continuous decrease of the SiC grain size was observed when the amount of CNT was increased, while the evolution of density showed a different behavior that could be explained by the particular combination of SPS technique with the electrical resistivity evolution of the green bodies. Optimal effect of CNTs addition on h…
Structural Diversity and Physical Properties of Paramagnetic Molecular Conductors Based on Bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF) and the T…
2014
International audience; Electrocrystallization of bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF) in the presence of the tris(chloranilato)ferrate(III) [Fe(Cl2An)3]3– paramagnetic chiral anion in different stoichiometric ratios and solvent mixtures afforded three different hybrid systems formulated as [BEDT-TTF]3[Fe(Cl2An)3]·3CH2Cl2·H2O (1), δ-[BEDT-TTF]5[Fe(Cl2An)3]·4H2O (2), and α‴-[BEDT-TTF]18[Fe(Cl2An)3]3·3CH2Cl2·6H2O (3). Compound 1 presents an unusual structure without the typical alternating organic and inorganic layers, whereas compounds 2 and 3show a segregated organic–inorganic crystal structure where layers formed by Λ and Δ enantiomers of the paramagnetic complex, together with…
Unusual packing of ET molecules caused by π–π stacking interactions with TRISPHAT molecules in two [ET][TRISPHAT] salts (ET=bis(ethylenedithio)tetrat…
2007
Abstract The synthesis, structure and physical properties of two new radical salts formed with the organic donor bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF or ET) and a racemic mixture of the chiral anion (tris(tetrachlorobenzenediolato)phosphate(V)) (TRISPHAT) are reported. The structure of the salts (ET)4[TRISPHAT]4 · 3.5H2O (1) and (ET)(TRISPHAT) · CH2Cl2 · CH3CN (2) has been solved by X-ray single crystal diffraction. Unusual packings of ET molecules are obtained in the two structures. The electrical properties indicate that both compounds are insulators. This is in agreement with the isolation of the ET molecules and their complete ionization. On the other hand, the anisotropy of …
Coulomb blockade thermometry
1996
One dimensional arrays of normal metal tunnel junctions have been found to exhibit properties which are very suitable for primary and secondary thermometry in a lithographically adjustable temperature range which extends over about two decades. The thermometer is remarkably insensitive to nonuniformities in the actual pattern and to even strong magnetic fields. We also discuss the behaviour of this device at very low temperatures where the hot electron effect due to poor electron phonon coupling ultimately takes over and at very high temperatures where the finite tunnel barrier effects appear. Short arrays, and especially single tunnel junctions show interesting deviations from the universa…
Two-Dimensional Crystals and van der Waals Heterostructures based on Inorganic and Molecular Strongly Correlated Layered Materials
2021
“En resumen, toda obra grande es el fruto de la paciencia y de la perseverancia, combinadas con una atención orientada tenazmente durante meses y aun años hacia un objeto particular”. “In summary, all great work is the fruit of patience and perseverance, combined with tenacious concentration on a subject over a period of months or years”. Santiago Ramón y Cajal (Reglas y consejos sobre investigación científica. Madrid: Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales, 1897). The present Thesis constitutes a journey –a romance of many dimensions, quoting Edwin Abbot Abbot– from 3D to 2D and, hopefully (we let the curious Reader judge), “Through Flatland to Thoughtland” (citing, again, Abbot…
Impact of freezing rate on electrical conductivity of produce
2013
The aim of this work was to compare the effects of freezing rate on electrical conductivity of potatoes, carrots and apples. Electrical conductivity tests were conducted on a custom ohmic cell while samples texture was measured by means of a universal testing machine. The raw un-pretreated samples were used as control. This study showed that freezing pre-treatments lead to differences in electrical conductivity of considered samples, producing structural damage, the latter being relatively more severe when the tested products undergo ohmic treatment.
Local tunneling study of three-dimensional order parameter in the pi band of Al-doped MgB2 single crystals
2007
We have performed local tunneling spectroscopy on high quality Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_x$B$_2$ single crystals by means of Variable Temperature Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS) in magnetic field up to 3 Tesla. Single gap conductance spectra due to c-axis tunneling were extensively measured, probing different amplitudes of the three-dimensional $\Delta_\pi$ as a function of Al content. Temperature and magnetic field dependences of the conductance spectra were studied in S-I-N configuration: the effect of the doping resulted in a monotonous reduction of the locally measured $T_C$ down to 24K for x=0.2. On the other hand, we have found that the gap amplitude shows a maximum value $\Delta_\pi= 2.3$ …
Superconducting properties of Nb thin films deposited on porous silicon templates
2008
Porous silicon, obtained by electrochemical etching, has been used as a substrate for the growth of nanoperforated Nb thin films. The films, deposited by UHV magnetron sputtering on the porous Si substrates, inherited their structure made of holes of 5 or 10 nm diameter and of 10 to 40 nm spacing, which provide an artificial pinning structure. The superconducting properties were investigated by transport measurements performed in the presence of magnetic field for different film thickness and substrates with different interpore spacing. Perpendicular upper critical fields measurements present peculiar features such as a change in the H_c2(T) curvature and oscillations in the field dependenc…
Thermal conductivity measurement of insulating innovative building materials by hot plate and heat flow meter devices: A Round Robin Test
2019
Abstract The characterization of thermal insulation properties of construction materials represents a fundamental step on the building insulation assessment. In recent years innovative materials have been introduced in the market to fulfill the continuously growing requirements of energy saving and sustainability, and their performance is not so reliable and mature as it happens for traditional insulators. The work presents a Round Robin Test realised among six European laboratories hosting hot plates devices to measure the thermal conductivity of four different materials: aerogel, vacuum insulation panels, polystyrene and birch wood fibre insulation boards. After the definition of the comm…
Josephson Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifiers as Non-Classical Light Source for Microwave Quantum Illumination
2021
Abstract Detection of low-reflectivity objects can be enriched via the so-called quantum illumination procedure. In order that this quantum procedure outperforms classical detection protocols, entangled states of microwave radiation are initially required. In this paper, we discuss the role of Josephson Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifiers (JTWPAs), based on circuit-QED components, as suitable sources of a two-mode squeezed vacuum state, a special signal-idler entangled state. The obtained wide bandwidth makes the JTWPA an ideal candidate for generating quantum radiation in quantum metrology and information processing applications.
