Fluxon dynamics in Li–Al codoped by microwave surface resistance measurements

2010

Abstract The magnetic-field-induced variations of the microwave surface resistance, R s , have been investigated in ceramic Mg1−x(LiAl)xB2, with x in the range 0.1 – 0.4 . The measurements have been performed on increasing and decreasing the DC magnetic field, H 0 , at fixed temperatures. At low temperatures, we have observed a magnetic hysteresis in the R s ( H 0 ) curves in all the investigated samples. On increasing the temperature, the range of H 0 in which the hysteretic behavior is visible shrinks; however, in the sample with x = 0.1 it is present up to temperatures close to T c . We show that the field dependence of R s can be quantitatively justified taking into account the critical…

Influence of the anion on diffusivity and mobility of ionic liquids composite polybenzimidazol membranes

2020

[EN] The study of proton conductivity processes has received increasing attention in the past decades due to their potential applications in fields such as electrochemical devices and fuel cells. Despite the high number of composite membranes which have been described for this purpose, fundamental studies of the conduction phenomena in polymeric membranes are scarce. In this article, we study on the effect of the anion on ionic conductivity of ionic liquid composite polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes. These membranes, which contain 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (BMIM) with different counterions ([Cl]-, [NCS]-, [NTf2]- and [BF4]-) were analyzed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in…

Diffusivity and free anion concentration of ionic liquid composite polybenzimidazole membranes.

2021

[EN] In this article, PBI composite membranes containing the ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BMIM-NTf2) at 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 wt% (named PBI-IL-x) have been prepared by a casting method. The internal morphology of the membranes was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), revealing that the incorporation of IL promotes the formation of porous channels. Thermal and mechanical stability was confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and tensile test measurements. The ionic transport through membranes was analysed by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), showing a dependence on the IL loading, reaching a highest condu…

Aluminium oxide — Poly(vinyl acetate) composite electrolyte for electrochromic devices

1997

This report describes composite proton electrolytes composed of nanosize activated aluminium oxide particles with different surface acidity suspended in a poly(vinyl acetate)/glycerine matrix. The conductivity of the composite was found to increase by going from basic to neutral to acidic aluminium oxide. Tests in laminated electrochromic devices with tungsten oxide and nickel hydroxide films showed that the acidic electrolyte is compatible with WO3, the basic electrolyte is compatible with Ni(OH)2, and the neutral electrolyte is compatible with both of the electrodes.

Enhanced Conductivity of Composite Membranes Based on Sulfonated Poly(Ether Ether Ketone) (SPEEK) with Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs)

2018

The zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) ZIF-8, ZIF-67, and a Zn/Co bimetallic mixture (ZMix) were synthesized and used as fillers in the preparation of composite sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membranes. The presence of the ZIFs in the polymeric matrix enhanced proton transport relative to that observed for SPEEK or ZIFs alone. The real and imaginary parts of the complex conductivity were obtained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and the temperature and frequency dependence of the real part of the conductivity were analyzed. The results at different temperatures show that the direct current (dc) conductivity was three orders of magnitude higher for composite …

Analogy between the effects of a mechanical and chemical perturbation on the conductivity of passive films

2002

Abstract In order to study the passivity breakdown of a type 316L stainless steel, the electrochemical impedance and surface stresses were measured under straining conditions. The Mott–Schottky analysis, performed at high frequency, appears as very useful method to study, below the apparent yield strength, the effects of a mechanical stress on the capacitance values. The results obtained in sodium chloride media indicate that the semiconducting properties of passive films formed in a tensile stress field reflect a higher vacancies concentration than those formed in a stress-free state, suggesting that the passive film conductivity is increased. It was also shown that the Mott–Schottky plots…

Supramolecular control of liquid crystals by doping with halogen-bonding dyes

2017

Introducing photochromic or polymeric dopants into nematic liquid crystals is a well-established method to create stimuli-responsive photonic materials with the ability to "control light with light". Herein, we demonstrate a new material design concept by showing that specific supramolecular interactions between the host liquid crystal and the guest dopants enhance the optical performance of the doped liquid crystals. By varying the type and strength of the dopant-host interaction, the phase-transition temperature, the order parameter of the guest molecules, and the diffraction signal in response to interference irradiation, can be accurately engineered. Our concept points out the potential…

Control of flow separation using electromagnetic forces

2003

Introduction If a fluid is electrically conductive, its flow may be controlled using electromagnetic forces. Meanwhile, this technique is a recognized tool even on an industrial scale for handling highly conductive materials like liquid metals. However, also fluids of low electrical conductivity as considered in the present study, like sea--water and other electrolytes, permit electromagnetic flow control. Experimental results on the prevention of flow separation by means of a streamwise, wall parallel Lorentz force acting on the suction side of inclined flat plates and hydrofoils will be presented. Force Configuration The stripwise arrangement of permanent magnets and electrodes of alterna…

Modeling bimetallic corrosion under thin electrolyte films

2011

A finite element model (FEM) was developed to calculate the potential distribution in the electrolyte in the case of bimetallic corrosion between iron and zinc electrodes, taking into account mass transport of oxygen in the solution. This model was first compared with experimental results obtained by scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) on a galvanized steel cut-edge in immersion conditions in a 0.03 M NaCl electrolyte. A good agreement was obtained between the calculated and experimental current densities. The model predicted the evolution of the galvanic coupling as function of the electrolyte thickness and for various iron–zinc surface area ratios. Different coupling regimes wer…

Molecular flattening effect to enhance the conductivity of fused porphyrin tape thin films.

2019

The straightforward synthesis of directly fused porphyrins (porphyrin tapes) from 5,15-diphenyl porphyrinato nickel(II) complexes with different substituents on the phenyl rings is achieved while processing from the gas phase. The porphyrin tapes, exhibiting NIR absorption, are readily obtained in thin film form. The gas phase approach cuts the need for solubilizing groups allowing for the first time the study of their conductivity according to the substituent. 2-Point probe and conductivity AFM measurements evidence that reducing the size of the meso substituents, phenyl < mesityl < di(3,5-tert-butyl)phenyl < di(2,6-dodecyloxy)phenyl, improves the thin film conductivity by several orders o…
