Changing commuters’ mobility behaviors of university campuses: environmental and energy comparisons

2021

Governments are required to take proper measures to promote the use of electric and hybrid vehicles and, more generally, to push people towards sweeter modalities including walking and biking. To reach such tight and challenging goals, local institutions should be deeply involved, and universities among them. The promotion of sustainable mobility practices among commuter students must be considered indeed an effective contribution to facilitating the transition towards greener cities. On purpose, students of the University of Palermo that daily commute from their residences to the campus are considered here. These commuters, in fact, mainly adopt traditional polluting transportation means. …

3-acetylaltholactone and related styryl-lactones, mitochondrial respiratory chain inhibitors.

2000

A novel furano-pyrone, 3-acetylaltholactone, and two other known styryl-lactones, altholactone and 5-acetoxyisogoniothalamin oxide, have been isolated from Goniothalamus arvensis (Annonaceae) stem bark. We report here the isolation and structural elucidation of these compounds with furane-pyrone and styryl-pyrone skeletons, postulating also for the first time their mechanism of cytotoxicity based on inhibition on mammalian mitochondrial respiratory chain.

Effects of texture and temperature on the kinetic of aroma release from model dairy custards

2010

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6T6R-4YYRMXD-2/2/9ac9167b05d21ef9ff6dcce684696e13 http://www.elsevier.com/locate/foodchem; International audience; The structure of a foodstuff, and its perceived texture, are important characteristics involved in the sensory availability of flavour compounds released during the food consumption. This study identifies the effect of texture on the dynamic release of aroma compounds under simulated oral conditions (temperature and shearing). Two custard desserts, with two levels of texture but the same composition, flavoured with four aroma compounds, were analysed. The rheological behaviour of the custards and the release of aroma compounds (SPME…

Enhancing the Sniper Simulator with Thermal Measurement

2014

This paper presents the enhancement of the Sniper multicore / manycore simulator with thermal measurement possibilities using the HotSpot simulator. We present a plugin that interacts with Sniper to retrieve simulation data (integration areas and power consumptions) and calls HotSpot to compute the corresponding thermal results. The plugin also builds a two dimensional floorplan for the simulated microarchitecture. Furthermore we plan to integrate the simulation methodology presented here into an automatic design space exploration process using the multi-objective optimization tool called FADSE. Experiences from a wearable-mobile acquisition system for ambulatory assessment of diet and activity

2017

Public health trends are currently monitored and diagnosed based on large studies that often rely on pen-and-paper data methods that tend to require a large collection campaign. With the pervasiveness of smart-phones and -watches throughout the general population, we argue in this paper that such devices and their built-in sensors can be used to capture such data more accurately with less of an effort. We present a system that targets a pan-European and harmonised architecture, using smartphones and wrist-worn activity loggers to enable the collection of data to estimate sedentary behavior and physical activity, plus the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. We report on a unified pilot…

Enabling Retransmissions for Achieving Reliable Multicast Communications in WSNs

2016

To ensure end-to-end reliable multicast or broadcast transmissions in IEEE 802.15.4 based wireless sensor networks WSNs) is a challenging task since no retransmission and acknowledgment mechanisms are defined in such WSNs. In this paper, we propose three retransmission enabled multicast transmission schemes in order to achieve reliable packet transmissions in such networks. Different from the legacy CSMA/CA principle, these schemes allow a sending or forwarding node to retransmit a packet if necessary and enable implicit or/and explicit acknowledgment for multicast services. Simulations are performed in order to assess the performance of these schemes in terms of number of retransmissions, …

Priority-oriented multicast transmission schemes for heterogeneous traffic in WSNs

2016

To ensure quality of service (QoS) for heterogeneous traffic in IEEE 802.15.4 based wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a challenging task since no traffic prioritization mechanism is defined in such WSNs. In this paper, we propose two priority-oriented multicast transmission schemes to provide QoS for heterogeneous traffic in WSNs. Contrary to the legacy CSMA/CA and FIFO principles, these schemes differentiate self-generated or received traffic and give priority to delay-sensitive traffic with respect to channel access and packet scheduling. Simulations are performed in order to assess the performance of these schemes in terms of end-to-end delay, energy consumption, packet delivery ratio, …

Evaluation and improvement of collective flooding in WSNs with various link correlations

2015

One of the main challenges confronted by wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is to reduce energy consumption of nodes for the purpose of network lifetime extension. In the literature, many backbone based protocols such as connected dominating set (CDS) and broadcast or multicast based protocols are employed in order to improve network performance in terms of metrics like energy consumption, number of transmissions and dissemination delay. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of a recently proposed transmission protocol known as collective flooding (CF), which is based on link correlation, under various link correlation conditions. Through simulations and analyses we demonstrate that altho…

High-speed, low-complexity fir filter using multiplier block reduction and polyphase decomposition

2005

In this paper we discuss the design and implementation of a highspeed FIR filter for both interpolation and decimation of the sample frequency. Several FIR filter structures are compared and various schemes for simplifying the implementation of the multiplications are evaluated. Carry-save adders with carryoverflow correction are used in the implementation. The results in terms of chip area and power consumption are compared using a standard 0.8 pm 3.3 V CMOS process.

Decoupling factors on the energy–output linkage: The Spanish case

2007

The recent increase of energy intensity in Spain and the ratification of the Kyoto protocol call for the implementation of energy policies in Spain. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Energy Consumption (EC) by taking into account several decoupling factors that can affect this linkage. Specifically, we have considered the temporal aggregation of data and its seasonal adjustments, the multivariate methodology, the substitution between EC and other inputs and the technological changes. Empirical tests reveal a long-run relationship between EC and GDP that can only be established in a complete way with a multivariate cointegration analysis.…
