Giant hepatic hydatid cyst as a cause of small bowel obstruction.

2006

Today, giant hydatid cysts are fairly rare even in endemic areas. We describe a case of an extremely large hydatid cyst of the liver that was causing massive compression of the neighboring organs, giving rise to a subocclusive syndrome of the intestine. After considering the various approaches available for the treatment of this disease, it was decided that radical surgery was still the best therapeutic choice, especially when extremely large cysts are involved. In particular, in clinical situations where it is difficult to perform radical surgical procedures, less aggressive surgery followed by drug treatment should be the treatment of choice.

Comparison of iodinated contrast media for the assessment of atherosclerotic plaque attenuation values by CT coronary angiography: observations in an…

2013

Objective: To compare the influence of different iodinated contrast media with several dilutions on plaque attenuation in an ex vivo coronary model studied by multislice CT coronary angiography. Methods: In six ex vivo left anterior descending coronary arteries immersed in oil, CT (slices/collimation 64x0.625 mm, temporal resolution 210 ms, pitch 0.2) was performed after intracoronary injection of a saline solution, and solutions of a dimeric isosmolar contrast medium (Iodixanol 320 mgl ml(-1)) and a monomeric high-iodinated contrast medium (Iomeprol 400 mgl ml(-1)) with dilutions of 1/80 (low concentration), 1/50 (medium concentration), 1/40 (high concentration) and 1/20 (very high concent…

A sphenoorbital encephalocele — clinical, radiological, and morphological findings

1988

We report here on congenital sphenoorbital encephalocele which could not be disclosed by computed tomography including contrast medium application or by orbital sonography. Surgery and histological examination were necessary to establish correct the diagnosis.

Rectal cancer: Assessment of response to neoadjuvant chemoradiation by dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI

2012

Purpose To assess pretreatment functional and morphological tumor characteristics with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in advanced rectal carcinoma and to identify factors predicting response to neoadjuvant chemoradiation. Materials and Methods In a prospective study, 95 patients with rectal carcinoma underwent dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI before and after chemoradiation. Quantitative parameters were derived from a pharmacokinetic two-compartment model. Tumors were also characterized with regard to mucinous status at pretreatment high-resolution MRI as nonmucinous or mucinous. Response to treatment was defined as a downshift in the local tumor stage. Results The parameter k21 (contrast me…

Reflexions about imaging technique and examination protocol

2004

Computed tomography as imaging technique is established since decades, especially in examinations of the orbit. New technical development of multi-slice helical CT requires new attention, concerning radiation burden. Always asked is the use of contrast material in orbital examination. Indications and contraindications are discussed.

Eine Nierenfunktionsanalyse durch die Computertomographie

1992

The CT clearance in a number of urological patients (39 patients, 25 with normal renal function) was studied by means of an "area under curve" (AUC) method, using a region of interest. 31 patients were given meglumine ioxithalamate and 8 patients Iopamidol as a contrast medium. Both for total and partial function there was highly significant correlation with isotope clearance with good reproducibility. The difference in the pharmacokinetics of the contrast media affected the absolute clearance values.

Diagnostic tools for female urethral diverticulum: Current perspectives

2019

Although once considered quite a rare condition in the past, female urethral diverticulum (UD) would now appear to have a higher frequency, perhaps due to greater attention from physicians. To date, there is no agreement on which is the best method for diagnosis of female UD. Traditionally, the approach was based on quite invasive techniques, such as voiding cystourethrography, and double-balloon urethrography, with satisfactory results but relevant limitations. More recent high-resolution imaging techniques, such as 2D-3D ultrasonography (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have also been applied in the study of the abnormalities of the female urethra. US had the advantage of the outp…

Anaphylaktoide Reaktion auf ein nichtionisches Röntgenkontrastmittel in Allgemeinanästhesie

1990

The occurrence of adverse reactions is decreasing since the introduction of non-ionic contrast media. Anaphylactoid reactions during general anaesthesia are rare and hitherto only documented with the administration of ionic compounds. We report an episode of hypotension, tachycardia, bronchospasm and urticaria following application of a non-ionic contrast medium (Iopamidol) during isoflurane anaesthesia. We conclude that a combinent use of anaesthesia and non-ionic contrast media does not guaranty protection from anaphylactoid reactions to iodinated radiopaque compounds.

MRI of tarantulas: morphological and perfusion imaging.

2005

This paper describes a study performed to evaluate the feasibility of using a 1.5-T whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment, in combination with pharmacokinetic modeling, to obtain in vivo information about the morphology and perfusion of tarantulas (Eurypelma californicum). MRI was performed on three tarantulas using spin-echo sequences for morphological imaging and a rapid spoiled gradient-echo sequence for dynamic imaging during and after contrast medium (CM; Gd-DTPA) injection. Signal enhancement in dynamic measurements was evaluated with a pharmacokinetic two-compartment model. Spin-echo images showed morphological structures well. Dynamic images were of sufficient qualit…

Correction of vesicoureteral reflux: where do we stand?

2004

Purpose of review Newer techniques of molecular biology allow us to gain a better understanding of the molecular mechanism of primary urinary reflux. In recent years, diagnostic tools and treatment options for vesicoureteric reflux have dramatically changed. In this review, we want to focus on genetics, molecular biology, histology, clinical findings, diagnostic tools and newer surgical techniques for the treatment of vesicoureteric reflux published between 2003 and March 2004. Recent findings Recent findings have demonstrated that the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system does not seem to be responsible for the development of primary vesicoureteric reflux. Echo-enhanced ultrasound with cont…
