Effect of nebulized beclomethasone on airway inflammation and clinical status of children with allergic asthma and rhinitis: a randomized, double-bli…

2012

We aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effect of nebulized beclomethasone dipropionate (nBDP) on both allergic asthma and rhinitis. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 40 children (mean age 10.7 ± 2.1 years) with allergic asthma and rhinitis received either nBDP (daily dose of 800 µg, administered twice daily) or placebo for 4 weeks (with a face mask), after a 2-week run-in period of clinical assessment. Nasal and oral fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) measurements together with pulmonary function tests, nasal and oral exhaled breath condensate (EBC) collection for pH and interleukin-5 (IL-5) measurements as well as nasal and bronchial symptom scores were obtained at…

Plantar flexor activation capacity and H reflex in older adults: adaptations to strength training.

2002

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the voluntary neural drive and the excitability of the reflex arc could be modulated by training, even in old age. To this aim, the effects of a 16-wk strengthening program on plantar flexor voluntary activation (VA) and on the maximum Hoffman reflex (Hmax)-to-maximum M wave (Mmax) ratio were investigated in 14 elderly men (65–80 yr). After training, isometric maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) increased by 18% ( P < 0.05) and weight-lifting ability by 24% ( P < 0.001). Twitch contraction time decreased by 8% ( P < 0.01), but no changes in half relaxation time and in peak twitch torque were observed. The VA, assessed by twitch …

Randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial of acetyl-L-carnitine for ALS.

2013

Our objective was to assess the effects of acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) with riluzole on disability and mortality of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Definite/probable ALS patients, 40-70 years of age, duration 6-24 months, self-sufficient (i.e. able to swallow, cut food/handle utensils, and walk), and with forced vital capacity (FVC) > 80% entered a pilot double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel group trial and were followed for 48 weeks. ALC or placebo 3 g/day was added to riluzole 100 mg/day. Primary endpoint: number of patients no longer self-sufficient. Secondary endpoints: changes in ALSFRS-R, MRC, FVC and McGill Quality of Life (QoL) scores. Analysis was made in the intention-to-tr…

Low doses of transdermal buprenorphine in opioid-naive patients with cancer pain: A 4-week, nonrandomized, open-label, uncontrolled observational stu…

2009

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect and tolerability of low doses of transdermal (TD) buprenorphine patches in opioid-naive patients with cancer pain. METHODS: This was a nonrandomized, open-label, uncontrolled study in consecutive opioid-naive patients with advanced cancer and moderate pain. TD buprenorphine was initiated at a dose of 17.5 microg/h (0.4 mg/d), with patch changes every 3 days. Doses were then adjusted according to the clinical response. Pain intensity, opioid-related adverse effects, TD buprenorphine doses, and quality of life were monitored over 4 weeks. The time to dose stabilization and indexes of dose escalation were also calculated. RESULTS: Thi…

Patterns of male-specific inter-population divergence in Europe, West Asia and North Africa

2000

summary We typed 1801 males from 55 locations for the Y-specific binary markers YAP, DYZ3, SRY "!)$" and the (CA)n microsatellites YCAII and DYS413. Phylogenetic relationships of chromosomes with the same binary haplotype were condensed in seven large one-step networks, which accounted for 95% of all chromosomes. Their coalescence ages were estimated based on microsatellite diversity. The three largest and oldest networks undergo sharp frequency changes in three areas. The more recent network 3‐1A clearly discriminates between Western and Eastern European populations. Pairwise Fst showed an overall increment with increasing geographic distance but with a slope greatly reduced when compared …

Cross-sectional area of the paraspinal muscles and its association with muscle strength among fighter pilots: a 5-year follow-up

2019

Background: A small cross sectional area (CSA) of the paraspinal muscles may be related to low back pain among military aviators but previous studies have mainly concentrated on spinal disc degeneration. Therefore, the primary aim of the study was to investigate the changes in muscle CSA and composition of the psoas and paraspinal muscles during a 5-year follow up among Finnish Air Force (FINAF) fighter pilots. Methods: Study population consisted of 26 volunteered FINAF male fighter pilots (age: 20.6 (±0.6) at the baseline). The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations were collected at baseline and after 5 years of follow-up. CSA and composition of the paraspinal and psoas muscles wer…

Do fatty acids help in overcoming reading difficulties? A double-blind, placebo-controlled study of the effects of eicosapentaenoic acid and carnosin…

2008

Background  There are claims that dietary supplementation of unsaturated fatty acids could help children with dyslexia to overcome their reading problems. However, these claims have not yet been empirically tested. Methods  This study was designed to test whether dietary supplementation was superior to placebo in treating reading, spelling or other reading-related skills of children with dyslexia. The experimental group (eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA, n = 30) ate dietary supplements and the control group (placebo, n = 31) placebos during the 90-day treatment period. The supplements contained omega-3 fatty acid (ethyl-EPA, 500 mg/day) and carnosine (400 mg/day). The groups were matched for read…

Sildenafil orodispersible film in the treatment of erectile dysfunction after radical prostatectomy: A single‐centre open‐label uncontrolled trial

2020

Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors are the first-line therapy for erectile dysfunction (ED) after radical prostatectomy (RP). This single-centre open-label uncontrolled study evaluated the efficacy and safety of the new sildenafil orodispersible film (ODF) in ED treatment after RP. Sildenafil 100 mg ODF was administered twice a week for 3 months to patients under 75 years of age, with a Framingham cardiovascular risk score < 20% and a pre-operative International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF)-5 score ≥ 17, who had undergone open RP between 2016 and 2018. Erectile function was assessed pre-operatively, post-operatively and after treatment through the IIEF-5 score, the Sexual Encounter Prof…

Efficacy of the long-acting nitro vasodilator pentaerithrityl tetranitrate in patients with chronic stable angina pectoris receiving anti-anginal bac…

2013

Background The organic nitrate pentaerithrityl tetranitrate (PETN) has been shown to have ancillary properties that prevent the development of tolerance and endothelial dysfunction. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre study (‘CLEOPATRA’ study) was designed to investigate the anti-ischaemic efficacy of PETN 80 mg b.i.d. (morning and mid-day) over placebo in patients with chronic stable angina pectoris. Methods and results A total of 655 patients were evaluated in the intention-to-treat population, randomized to PETN (80 mg b.i.d., n = 328) or placebo ( n = 327) and completed the study. Patients underwent treadmill exercise tests at randomization, after 6 and 12 wee…
