Defense versus Opulence? An Appraisal of the Malthus-Ricardo 1815 Controversy on the Corn Laws

This article proposes a rational reconstruction of the arguments of Malthus and Ricardo in their 1815 essays, Grounds of an Opinion and An Essay on Profits, whereby a policy of free corn trade was repudiated and endorsed, respectively. Malthus envisaged defense and (trade-induced) opulence as two mutually alternative options and, if required to make a choice, he had no hesitation in choosing the former. By contrast, Ricardo excluded any such trade-off, arguing that even in the case of war or poor domestic harvest, foreign agricultural countries would be seriously damaged if they opted for restrictions on their corn exports to Great Britain.

Separation of deoxyribonucleases (DNases) of normal human stratum corneum and psoriatic scales by micro-disc-electrophoresis.

Normal stratum corneum and psoriatic scales were homogenized and a differential centrifugation was performed. The DNase activity of the individual fractions was investigated by micro-disc-electrophoresis. At pH 5 only in the 600 × g pellet and 105.000 × g supernatant of normal keratin DNase activity could be observed. However, all psoriatic fractions showed distinct enzyme activities. At pH 7.4 little psoriatic DNase activity could only be demonstrated in the 105.000 × g supernatant. Except from the 15.000 × g pellet all fractions of normal stratum corneum displayed marked activities. In addition the 105.000 × g supernatant showed two different DNase bands.

Quantitative corneal anatomy: evaluation of the effect of diabetes duration on the endothelial cell density and corneal thickness.

Purpose To evaluate the differences in endothelial cell density (ECD) and central corneal thickness (CCT) between type II diabetic patients and age-matched healthy controls, and determine the impact of time from diagnosis. Methods This is a comparative study of 77 eyes of type II diabetic patients (33 males, 44 females) and 80 eyes of healthy subjects (42 males, and 38 females) whose ages ranged from 38 to 56 years. CCT, ECD, HbA1c levels, and Goldmann tonometry were measured. Methods The Wiesbaden Prematurity Study investigated 503 participants of former gestational age ≤32 weeks and gestational age ≥37 weeks now being aged 4 to 10 years. Proposal of a new diffractive corneal inlay to improve near vision in a presbyopic eye

[EN] A new class of diffraction-based corneal inlays for treatment of presbyopia is described. The inlay is intended to achieve an improvement of the near focus quality over previous designs. Our proposal is a two-zone hybrid device with separated amplitude and phase areas having a central aperture and no refractive power. An array of micro-holes is distributed on the surface of the inlay conforming a binary photon sieve. In this way, the central hole of the disk contributes to the zero order of diffraction, and the light diffracted by the micro-holes in the peripheral photon sieve produces a real focus for near vision. Calcification is not the Achilles'heel of cold-water corals in an acidifying ocean

Ocean acidification is thought to be a major threat to coral reefs: laboratory evidence and CO2 seep research has shown adverse effects on many coral species, although a few are resilient. There are concerns that cold-water corals are even more vulnerable as they live in areas where aragonite saturation (Omega ara) is lower than in the tropics and is falling rapidly due to CO2 emissions. Chitosan oligosaccharide (C) was functionalized with L-arginine (A) and short hydrocarbon chains (C-8) to design an amphiphilic copolymer, henceforth CAC(8), leading to microparticles (MPs) consisting of an arginine-decorated hydrophilic shell and inner hydrophobic domains allowing the encapsulation of high amount hydrophobic drugs such as sorafenib tosylate (>10% w/w). The drug permeability prediction across the ocular tissues is important in the development of new drugs and drug delivery strategies. Perspiration versus saliva--basic aspects concerning their use in roadside drug testing.

Various aspects concerning the practical application and forensic interpretation of data obtained by saliva drug testing and drug monitoring from the skin surface are discussed. Basic information on the composition of saliva and skin secretions and their particular transport mechanisms, as far as known, are given.
