Optical Quality Comparison of Conventional and Hole-Visian Implantable Collamer Lens at Different Degrees of Decentering

2012

To compare the optical quality of implantable Collamer lens (ICL) with and without central hole (Hole ICL and conventional ICL) at different degrees of decentering.Experimental laboratory investigation.Wavefront aberrations of the -3, -6, and -12 diopter (D) V4b and -3, -6, and -12 D V4c ICLs were measured in 3 conditions-centered and decentered 0.3 and 0.6 mm-at 3-mm and 4.5-mm pupils. The root mean square of total higher order aberrations, trefoil, coma, tetrafoil, secondary astigmatism, and spherical aberration were evaluated. In addition, point spread function and simulated retinal images of ICLs were calculated from the wavefront aberrations for each ICL and all conditions of decenteri…

Residual astigmatism produced by toric intraocular lens rotation.

2010

Purpose To analyze changes in the eye’s refractive properties when a toric intraocular lens (IOL) rotates. Setting Fundacion Oftalmologica del Mediterraneo, Valencia, Spain. Design Experimental study. Methods The matrix definition of astigmatism was used in this theoretical study and compared with another vector representation. Two methods were compared: (1) The cylinder, C, resulting from the addition of 2 cylinders C1 and C2 whose axes form an angle a, is obtained by the addition of 2 vectors of values C1 and C2 forming an angle 2a; (2) the power matrix, F, of a thin astigmatic dioptric system that decomposes naturally into 3 orthogonal components: the purely spherical part Fnes, the orth…

Transconjunctival sutureless 25-Gauge versus 20-Gauge standard vitrectomy: correlation between corneal topography and ultrasound biomicroscopy measur…

2009

Purpose: To determine the correlation between corneal shape changes and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) findings at the sclerotomy sites in conventional 20-gauge (G) pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and 25-G transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy (TSV) and to compare the effectiveness of the two surgical methods. Design: Prospective, comparative, observational case series. Methods: Sixty consecutive eyes (60 patients) undergoing primary 3-port PPV. Thirty eyes (30 patients, group 20-G) were treated with 20-G standard PPV and 30 eyes (30 patients, group 25-G) with 25-G TSV. We compared healing of the sclerotomy sites in the two groups. We determined the correlation between corneal shape changes (…

Intermediate-filament expression in ocular tissue.

2002

Intermediate-filament proteins (IFPs) occur in the intracellular cytoskeleton of eukaryotic cells, and their expression in diverse tissues is related both to embryology as well as to differentiation. Although the available information concerning their functional properties in vivo is still incomplete, antibodies against individual IFPs are commonly used in immunohistochemical procedures as markers for differentiation, and these antibodies are of outstanding value in the routine histopathological evaluation of tumor specimens. This review presents a compilation of the currently available data concerning IFP expression in normal and diseased ocular tissues. Representatives of every known clas…

Novel alpha-galactosidase A mutation in a female with recurrent strokes.

2012

Abstract Anderson–Fabry disease (AFD) is an X-linked inborn error of glycosphingolipid catabolism resulting from the deficient activity of the lysosomal exoglycohydrolase, a-galactosidase A. The complete genomic and cDNA sequences of the human alpha-galactosidase A gene have been determined and to date, several disease-causing alpha-galactosidase A mutations have been identified, including missense mutations, small deletions/insertions, splice mutations, and large gene rearrangements We report a case of a 56-year-old woman with recurrent cryptogenic strokes. Ophthalmological examination revealed whorled opacities of the cornea (cornea verticillata) and dilated tortuous conjunctival vessels.…

Patterns of cytokeratin and vimentin expression in the human eye

1988

We studied the expression of the various cytokeratin (CK) polypeptides and vimentin in tissues of the human eye by applying immunocytochemical procedures using a panel of monoclonal antibodies as well as by performing biochemical analyses of microdissected tissues. Adult corneal epithelium was found to contain significant amounts of the cornea-specific CKs nos. 3 and 12 as well as CK no. 5, and several additional minor CK components. Among these last CKs, no. 19 was found to exhibit an irregular mosaic-like staining pattern in the peripheral zone of the corneal epithelium, while having a predominantly basal distribution in the limbal epithelium. Both the fetal corneal epithelium and the con…

KLEIP Deficiency in Mice Causes Progressive Corneal Neovascular Dystrophy

2012

PURPOSE. The BTB-kelch protein KLEIP/KLHL20 is an actin binding protein that regulates cell-cell contact formation and cell migration. The aim of our study was to characterize KLEIP’s function in ocular health and disease in mice. METHODS. KLEIP -/- mice were generated, and corneas were examined histologically and stained for keratin-1, loricrin, keratin-12, keratin-14, CD31, LYVE-1, F4/80, E-cadherin, and Ki67. Corneal abrasions were performed after eyelid opening. RESULTS. Corneas of KLEIP þ/þ and KLEIP -/- mice were indistinguishable at birth. After eyelid opening corneal epithelial hyperplasia started to manifest in KLEIP -/- mice, showing a progressive epithelial metaplasia leading to …

Clinical heterogeneity in infantile galactosialidosis

1987

A new case of infantile galactosialidosis is presented. The condition was diagnosed when the patient was 4 months of age and she died at 20 months. She exhibited some of the symptoms of classical infantile galactosialidosis but no corneal clouding, cherry-red macular spot or limitation of joint mobility. Sonographic examination showed large kidneys and thickened cardiac septa, two symptoms as yet undescribed in this disorder. Urinary oligosaccharide analysis gave grossly pathological results and subsequent fibroblast enzyme analysis showed a deficiency of alpha-neuraminidase and beta-galactosidase. The patient's clinical features are compared with the few cases so far described in the liter…

Patient-specific simulation of the intrastromal ring segment implantation in corneas with keratoconus

2015

Purpose The purpose of this study was the simulation of the implantation of intrastromal corneal-ring segments for patients with keratoconus. The aim of the study was the prediction of the corneal curvature recovery after this intervention. Methods Seven patients with keratoconus diagnosed and treated by implantation of intrastromal corneal-ring segments were enrolled in the study. The 3D geometry of the cornea of each patient was obtained from its specific topography and a hyperelastic model was assumed to characterize its mechanical behavior. To simulate the intervention, the intrastromal corneal-ring segments were modeled and placed at the same location at which they were placed in the s…
