B cells in the aged: CD27, CD5, and CD40 expression.
2003
Ageing is characterized by numerous changes in lymphocyte subpopulations. In the present paper we have focused on B cells carrying the surface markers CD27, CD5 and CD40. CD27 is considered a marker of primed (memory) cells and its engagement promotes the differentiation of memory B cells into plasma cells. CD5 is expressed on B1 cells, which are considered to be responsible for T cell-independent antibody production other than autoantibodies. The CD40 molecule binds CD40L (CD154) and is necessary for T-dependent antibody responses. Here we show that the absolute number of CD5+ and CD40+ B cells is decreased in the elderly, while CD27+ B lymphocytes only marginally decrease in centenarians.…
Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines in Elective Flap Surgery
2006
Surgical trauma releases inflammatory mediators such as pro-inflammatory cytokines. In this prospective, controlled, randomized trial we investigated the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and monocyte/macrophage activation in patients scheduled for breast reconstruction after mastectomy. Patients were allocated to one of three surgical procedures, differing in complexity and in the need for implants used for reconstruction.Thirty mastectomized women underwent delayed breast reconstruction with the lateral thoracodorsal flap (LTD), the latissimus dorsi flap (LD), or the pedicled transverse rectus abdominis muscle flap (TRAM). Blood samples for TNF, IL-6, IL-8, neopterin, C-reactive prote…
Effects of LASIK on Corneal Endothelium Using the 15-kHz IntraLase Femtosecond Laser
2011
PURPOSE: To assess the effects of LASIK with the 15-kHz IntraLase femtosecond laser on corneal endothelium. METHODS: In a prospective, single-center clinical trial, 138 patients (mean age: 32.0±7.1 years [range: 21 to 42 years]) underwent femtosecond LASIK for the correction of myopia −0.75 to −9.00 diopters (D) and cylinder up to 3.25 D. Patients were divided into two groups: contact lens group (n=76) and non-contact lens group (n=62). Pre- and 12-month postoperative specular microscopy of the central corneal endothelium was performed. The integrity of the central endothelium was assessed in terms of endothelial cell density and percentage of hexagonality. RESULTS: In the contact lens gro…
Women With and Without Metabolic Disorder Differ in Their Gut Microbiota Composition
2012
The aim of this study was to investigate whether overweight/obese women in metabolic disorder group (MDG, n = 27) differ in their gut microbiota composition from overweight/obese women in non-metabolic disorder group (NMDG, n = 47) and normal weight women group (NWG, n = 11). Gut microbiota was profiled from fecal samples by 16S rRNA fluorescence in situ hybridization and flow cytometry in 85 premenopausal women. Body composition was measured by bioimpedance, and dietary intakes were collected via food diaries. Standard procedures were used to assess plasma glucose, serum insulin, lipids, and inflammatory status. We found that the proportion of bacteria belonging to Eubacterium rectale-Clos…
Inter-cycle and inter-observer variability of the antral follicle count in routine clinical practice
2017
Antral follicle count (AFC) is a reliable predictor of ovarian response to stimulation and its inter-cycle and inter-observer variability has been extensively studied on in vitro fertilization (IVF), mostly in highly selected populations within studies not originally designed for this purpose. In this retrospective cohort study, we assess the inter-cycle variation of AFC in a setting similar to that of the daily practice. We included only patients undergoing mild stimulation for intrauterine insemination (IUI). One hundred and forty-eight patients had two (62 patients, group A), three (49 patients, group B) or four (37 patients, group C) IUI cycles and AFC was measured on early follicular p…
Pregnancy outcomes in women with advanced HIV infection in Italy
2011
Pregnancy has been associated with a low risk of HIV disease progression. Most pregnancies with HIV currently involve women who have not experienced AIDS-defining events, and are clinically classified as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) groups A or B. We evaluated the main maternal outcomes among pregnant women with more advanced HIV disease, defined by CDC-C disease stage. Data from the Italian National Program on Surveillance on Antiretroviral Treatment in Pregnancy were used. A total of 566 HIV-infected mothers, 515 in stage A or B (CDC-AB group) and 51 in stage C (CDC-C group) were evaluated. The two groups had similar baseline characteristics. No differences were found …
Collagen copolymer posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens for hyperopia correction: three-year follow-up.
2013
Purpose To assess the efficacy, predictability, safety, and stability of the Visian V3 Implantable Collamer Lens posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens (PC pIOL) for moderate to high hyperopia. Setting Private clinic, Oviedo, Spain. Design Prospective nonrandomized clinical study. Methods The uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities, manifest refraction, endothelial cell density, intraocular pressure (IOP), central vault, and adverse events were evaluated for 3 years postoperatively. Results The study comprised 73 eyes of 44 patients. The mean spherical equivalent decreased from +4.84 diopters (D) ± 1.6 (SD) (range +1.00 to +7.75 D) preoperatively to −0.13 ± 0.39 …
Oxidative stress after moderate to extensive burning in humans.
2000
Lipid peroxidation products, lipid antioxidants, and hematologic and blood chemistry changes were evaluated in plasma of patients after acute burning injury involving 10% (n=8), 20% (n=8), and 40% (n=5) of total body surface area (TBSA), 24 h after burning (baseline) up to 30 days after. Markedly increased plasma levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) were observed at baseline in all patients, according to the extent of the injury, then the values declined progressively. However, levels of MDA remained above normal up to 30 days even in less injured patients. On the other hand, the plasma level of conjugated diene lipid hydroperoxides was only slightly higher than control at the baseline, then dro…
Changes in Maternal Blood Inflammatory Markers As a Predictor Of Chorioamnionitis: A Prospective Multicenter Study
2014
Problem To evaluate the inflammatory pattern in maternal circulation from women with preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) considering the occurrence of histologically confirmed chorioamnionitis (HCA). Method of study A prospective study was conducted in 121 women with PPROM between 24 and 34 + 0 weeks of gestation. Association between white blood cells (WBC) count, plasma CRP, IL-6, MCP-1 and IP-10 levels, and HCA was assessed. Results The rate of HCA was 44.7% (54/121). During the 5 days preceding delivery, median CRP, WBC, and IL-6 levels were significantly higher in the HCA than in no-HCA group (P < 0.001). Variations in IL-6, IP-10 levels, during the 24–72 hr before delivery, …
The effects of assisted and resisted plyometric training on jump height and sprint performance among physically active females
2021
The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of assisted and resisted plyometric jump training on jump height, sprint performance (acceleration (0-20m), maximum speed (30-40m) and 40m sprint time) among physically active females. Fifty-six participants (age: 21.1 ± 1.7 years; body mass: 64.2 ± 7.0 kg; height: 168.0 ± 5.6 cm) were randomly allocated to either an assisted (n = 16) or resisted training group (n = 17), or a control group (n = 14). Nine participants dropped out during the intervention. The training sessions consisted of three different plyometric jump exercises over an eight-week period, while the control group continued their normal training routine. The results reve…
