A vacuum cell for obtaining clean surfaces on liquid low melting point metals

1997

Abstract Clean oxide film-free surface of liquid gallium was obtained in a sealed vacuum cell with a glass lid for observation. The cell was evacuated to high vacuum (10 -4 Pa) before admission of liquid and sealing. The surface contamination was about 2–5% of the free area and did not exhibit noticeable increase during several months of storing and employing the cell. The cell described allows observation of surface flows, capillary phenomena and crystallization processes under different conditions.

Mechanistic and kinetic insight into spontaneous cocrystallisation of isoniazid and benzoic acid

2015

Solid-state cocrystallisation is of contemporary interest, because it offers an easy and efficient way to produce cocrystals, which are recognized as prospective pharmaceutical materials. Research explaining solid-state cocrystallisation mechanisms is important, but still too scarce to give a broad understanding of factors governing and limiting these reactions. Here we report an investigation of the mechanism and kinetics of isoniazid cocrystallisation with benzoic acid. This reaction is spontaneous; however its rate is greatly influenced by environmental conditions (humidity and temperature) and pre-treatment (milling) of the sample. The acceleration of cocrystallisation in the presence o…

First-principles study of nitrogen doping in cubic and amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5

2011

We investigated the structural, electronic and vibrational properties of amorphous and cubic Ge(2)Sb(2)Te(5) doped with N at 4.2 at.% by means of large scale ab initio simulations. Nitrogen can be incorporated in molecular form in both the crystalline and amorphous phases at a moderate energy cost. In contrast, insertion of N in the atomic form is very energetically costly in the crystalline phase, though it is still possible in the amorphous phase. These results support the suggestion that N segregates at the grain boundaries during the crystallization of the amorphous phase, resulting in a reduction in size of the crystalline grains and an increased crystallization temperature.

Dimeric resorcinarene salt capsules with very tight encapsulation of anions and guest molecules

2015

Crystallization of N-cyclohexyl ammonium resorcinarene triflate from methanol results in a dimeric capsule capable of trapping two triflate anions and two methanol molecules within a 341 A3 cavity while with 1,4-dioxane as a guest it forms a new larger dimeric capsule with volume of 679 A3 encapsulating four 1,4-dioxane and four water molecules, resulting in packing coefficients of 0.75 and 0.67, respectively.

Structural Characterization and Magnetic Properties of the First 2,2‘-Bipyrimidine-Containing Iron(III) Complexes

1998

Two new iron(III) complexes of the formulas [Fe(bpm)Cl3(H2O)]·H2O (1) and [Fe2(bpm)Cl6(H2O)2]·2H2O (2) (bpm = 2,2‘-bipyrimidine) have been synthesized and their crystal structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1 and 2 crystallize in the monoclinic system, space group P21/n, with a = 8.593(2) A, b = 17.669(4) A, c = 8.928(2) A, β = 102.36(2)°, and Z = 4 for 1 and a = 6.422(3) A, b = 11.999(4) A, c = 12.297(6) A, β = 93.82(4)°, and Z = 2 for 2. The structure of complex 1 is made up of neutral [Fe(bpm)Cl3(H2O)] mononuclear units and water molecules of crystallization. The monuclear units are linked through hydrogen bonds involving the coordinated water molecule and one of the…

Timolol derivatives. I. X-ray, NMR and theoretical studies of the crystallization of (S)-timolol O,O-diacetyl-l-tartaric acid monoester

1993

Abstract The absolute configurations of (S)-timolol hemihydrate and (S)-timolol O,O-diacetyl-(R,R)-tartaric acid monoester were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. An NMR analysis based on the temperature dependence of vicinal coupling constants was carried out to characterize the conformational behaviour of the S,R,R- and R,R,R-forms in solution. The same conformation as in crystalline state was also found in solution, although with a rather low preference over some other conformations. Results of theoretical calculations using MNDO and AMBER force field methods are reported. An infinite chain of hydrogen bonds, along with other favourable inter- and intramolecular forces that …

Sol–Gel Synthesis of Tunable Cerium Titanate Materials

2008

Cerium titanate structures present a high technological interest because of their optical and catalytic properties. This work reports the synthesis of these materials by a sol–gel methodology that allows mixed oxides with TiIV/CeIII, TiIV/CeIV or TiIV/CeIII–CeIV species to be obtained. Crystallization of CeO2–TiO2 mixed oxides and Ce2Ti2O7 pyrochlore phase was corroborated by XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Magnetic and EPR measurements were performed in order to clarify the oxidation state of the cerium ions in the system as a result of the easy oxidation of CeIII. The firing atmosphere is crucial for the CeIII/CeIV ratio, which is responsible for the different structure, but it also affects t…

Glass Transition and Food Technology: A Critical Appraisal

2002

ABSTRACT: Most low water content or frozen food products are partly or fully amorphous. This review will discuss the extent to which it is possible to understand and predict their behavior during processing and storage, on the basis of glass transition temperature values (Tg) and phenomena related to glass transition. Two main conclusions are provisionally proposed. Firstly, glass transition cannot be considered as an absolute threshold for molecular mobility. Transport of water and other small molecules takes place even in the glassy state at a significant rate, resulting in effective exchange of water in multi-domains foods or sensitivity to oxidation of encapsulated materials. Texture pr…

Über gemischte Gruppe 14—Gruppe 14-Bindungen

1991

Abstract p-Tol6PbSn has been synthesized by reaction of p-Tol3PbLi with p-Tol3SnI in THF/ether (1:2) at −78°C. The crystal structures of p-Tol4Pb (I 4 ) and of p-Tol6Sn2, p-Tol6PbSn and p-Tol6Pb2 have been determined. The three dinuclear compounds crystallize not strickly isomorphous. They exhibit the same space group (R 3 and rather similar unit cell dimensions. Yet according to the solvent of crystallization, two types with differing atomic position parameters can be distinguished (“homoeotypism with differences of parameters” in the definition of Laves). In both types, the individual molecules have a chiral C3-symmetric conformation and the non-chiral unit cell encloses both enantiomers.…

Stamping of monomeric SAMs as a route to structured crystallization templates: patterned titania films.

2000

Gold-coated glass slides have be patterned by using self-assembled monolayers (SAM) of alkane thiols. Through the use of a special thiol terminated with a styrene monomer, microstructures of 5 to 10 microm width and 70 A height have been formed on the surface by graft polymerization of styrene. These patterned gold slides have then been used to template the precipitation of thin titania films from ethanolic solutions of titanium isopropoxide to create microstructured architectures in the film. Plasmon resonance spectra have established the presence of different steps in the process and have been used to follow the kinetics of the precipitation of titania on the surface. The structured TiO2 …
