Investigation of the glass transition and melting of polymers by nuclear magnetic resonance

2007

Investigations of the glass transition and melting of partially crystalline polymers by nuclear magnetic resonance provide valuable information on the nature of noncrystalline regions. The broad line NMR signal was separated into a narrow component and a broad component by using a new method which does not imply the ambiguity usually present. From the intensity of the narrow component the mobile fraction was determined. This fraction was extrapolated to “infinite” temperature. By subtracting the mobile fraction from the noncrystalline fraction, the noncrystalline rigid fraction was obtained. Comparison of the measured second moments of the two components of the NMR line with calculated seco…

Crystal structure and morphology of polymers from solid-state reactions

1975

Some solid-state reactions which give rise to the formation of polymer crystals are discussed and the observation of the nascent polymer morphology is used as a guide-line to learn about the reaction mechanism of solid-state polymerizations. Examples for the following three different mechanisms are treated in detail: (a) crystallization succeeding polymerization, (b) simultaneous polymerization and crystallization, and (c) polymerization in solid solution. The nascent morphology of poly(alkylene)s obtained by Ziegler-Natta catalysis is taken as an example for crystallization succeeding polymerization. Another example is the cationic polymerization of 1,3,5-trioxane from solution. In this ca…

ChemInform Abstract: In situ DRIFT Spectroscopic Investigation on the Chemical Evolution of Zinc Phosphate Acid-Base Cement.

2010

Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy has been used to follow the chemical evolution of zinc phosphate acid−base cement (ZPC), which has been prepared from unmodified, as well as from aluminum- and zinc-modified orthophosphoric acid. For the first time, amorphous dizinc cyclotetraphosphate octahydrate, Zn2P4O12·8H2O, although hydrolytically instable, has been observed as precursor phase prior to crystallization of α-hopeite, α-Zn3(PO4)2·4H2O, in both systems. Within minutes from onset of mixing the infrared spectrum of unmodified ZPC is dominated by the characteristic vibrations of α-hopeite, due to matrix crystallization. Setting of modified ZPC is strongly af…

Comparative effect of supercritical carbon dioxide and high pressure processing on structural changes and activity loss of oxidoreductive enzymes

2019

Abstract Due to the CO2 specific characteristics, it has been used as supercritical (Sc) fluid for several applications, including enzyme inactivation. The influence of Sc-CO2 (10–65 MPa/10–30 min/35–65 °C) on mushroom polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and horseradish peroxidase (POD) was evaluated and the results were compared with those found using high pressure processing (HPP) (200–900 MPa/5–45 °C/1–15 min). The free ion concentration was also studied to compare the enzymatic activity and changes in electrical conductivity. Additionally both enzymes, untreated or treated using either Sc-CO2 or HPP, were used as additives in the CuCl2 crystallization method. The resulting additive-specific CuCl2 …

Surface-Functionalized Latex Particles as Controlling Agents for the Mineralization of Zinc Oxide in Aqueous Medium

2005

Polystyrene latex particles modified at the surface with different hydrophilic functional groups were prepared by miniemulsion polymerization and used as controlling agents in the crystallization of zinc oxide from aqueous medium. The effects of the chemical nature of the surface functionalization and the latex concentration on the crystal growth, morphology, and crystalline structure of the resulting zinc oxide were analyzed. Micro- and submicrosized crystals with a broad variety of morphologies depending on the functionalization were obtained. Among the different latexes studied, the acrylic-acid-derived particles were shown to be a convenient system for further quantitative investigation…

Conformation of tert-butoxycarbonylglycyl-dehydroalanyl-glycine methyl ester in the crystalline state and calculated in the gas phase.

2006

tert-Butoxycarbonylglycyl-dehydroalanyl-glycine methyl ester (systematic name: methyl {2-[(tert-butoxycarbonylamino)acetamido]prop-2-enamido}acetate) (Boc0-Gly1-ΔAla2-Gly3-OMe), C13H21N3O6, has been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and by density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the B3LYP/6–311+G** level. The peptide chain in both the solid-state and calculated structures adopts neither β nor γ turns. All amino acid residues in the tripeptide sequence are linked trans to each other. The bond lengths and valence angles of the amino acid units in the crystal structure and gas phase are comparable. However, the conformation of the third glycyl residue (…

The use of master curves to describe the simultaneous effect of cooling rate and pressure on polymer crystallization

2003

In a previous work a master-curve approach was applied to experimental density data to explain isotactic polypropylene (iPP) behaviour under pressure and high cooling rates. Suitable samples were prepared by solidification from the melt under various cooling rate and pressure conditions with the help of a special apparatus based on a modified injection moulding machine. The approach here reported is more general than the case study previously shown, and is suitable to be applied to several materials and for different measures related to crystalline content. The proposed simple model is able to predict successfully the final polymer properties (density, micro-hardness, crystallinity) by supe…

The first successful crystallization of a prokaryotic extremely thermophilic outer surface layer glycoprotein

1999

AbstractMethanoihermus fervidusbelongs to the group of hyperthermophilic Archaea. The Archaea comprise organisms that live under environmental extremes, like high temperature, lowpH value or high salt concentration. The outer surface of the pseudomurein sacculi of the cells ofMethanothermus fervidusis covered by glycoprotein subunits (S-layer) directly exposed to the extreme environment. The elucidation of the crystal structure of this surface glycoprotein may provide important information on the survival strategies of these unusual micro-organisms. Before our investigations neither three-dimensional crystals have been obtained nor X-ray analyses were performed. Only electron microscopic an…

Kristallinität und schmelzbereiche von isotaktischen polystyrolen. VI. Mitt. Über die stereospezifische polymerisation mit alkaliorganischen verbindu…

1963
