A Comparison of Solar and Conventional Pavements Via Life Cycle Assessment
2023
The sustainable and green development of roads is lately receiving significant attention. As a multi-functional road capable of both accommodating traffic loads and generating clean energy, solar pavements exhibit a strategic opportunity for the future path of development in the road engineering. Although solar pavements have significant environmental benefits during their operation, they can lead to increased carbon emissions during the process of material preparation, construction, maintenance, etc. Therefore, it is essential to implement the framework of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to investigate their potential environmental impacts and/or benefits. Hence, this paper systematically anal…
A statistical design of experiments for optimizing the MALDI-TOF-MS sample preparation of polymers. An application in the assessment of the thermo-me…
2011
[EN] The sample preparation procedure for MALDI-TOF MS of polymers is addressed in this study by the application of a statistical Design of Experiments (DoE). Industrial poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was chosen as model polymer. Different experimental settings (levels) for matrixes, analyte/matrix proportions and concentrations of cationization agent were considered. The quality parameters used for the analysis were signal-to-noise ratio and resolution. A closer inspection of the statistical results provided the study not only with the best combination of factors for the MALDI sample preparation, but also with a better understanding of the influence of the different factors, individua…
Assessing the MALDI-TOF MS sample preparation procedure to analyze the influence of thermo-oxidative ageing and thermo-mechanical degradation on poly…
2011
[EN] Multiple processing by means of successive injection cycles was used to simulate the thermo-mechanical degradation effects on the oligomeric distribution of PLA under mechanical recycling. Likewise, an accelerated thermal ageing over PLA glass transition was performed in order to simulate its service life. MALDI-TOF MS was used for the analysis and the sample preparation procedure was assessed by means of a statistical Design of Experiments (DoE). The quality effects in use for the analysis were signal-to-noise ratio and Resolution. Different matrixes, analyte/matrix proportions and the use of NaTFA as cationization agent were considered. A deep inspection of the statistical results pr…
Molecular mechanisms of sorafenib action in liver cancer cells.
2012
Sorafenib, a multikinase inhibitor, recently received FDA approval for the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, as the clinical application of sorafenib evolves, there is increasing interest in defining the mechanisms underlying its anti-tumor activity. Considering that this specific inhibitor could target unexpected molecules depending on the biologic context, a precise understanding of its mechanism of action could be critical to maximize its treatment efficacy, while minimizing adverse effects. Two human HCC cell lines (HepG2 and Huh7), carrying different biological and genetic characteristics, were used in this study to examine the intracellular events leading …

Potential retrieval of biophysical parameters from FLORIS, S3-OLCI and its synergy
2012
The main objective of FLEX is the measurement of vegetation chlorophyll fluorescence (Fs) from space and the exploitation of this signal to better understand the carbon cycle. FLuORescence Imaging Spectrometer (FLORIS) is the main instrument of the FLEX mission concept. ESA's Earth Science Advisory Committee recommended the investigation of the FLEX concept as an in-orbit demonstrator to be flown as a tandem mission with Sentinel-3 (S-3). S-3 is amongst others equipped with the Ocean Land Colour Instrument (OLCI). When flown in tandem these instruments are expected to provide an accurate characterization of key atmospheric and surface parameters to facilitate Fs retrieval for FLORIS. In thi…

Cytotoxicity of Artesunic Acid Homo- and Heterodimer Molecules toward Sensitive and Multidrug-Resistant CCRF-CEM Leukemia Cells
2010
A novel approach to circumvent multidrug resistance is hybridization of natural products in dimers. We analyzed homodimers of two artesunic acid molecules and heterohybrids of artesunic acid and betulin in human CCRF-CEM and multidrug-resistant P-glycoprotein-overexpressing CEM/ADR5000 leukemia cells. Multidrug-resistant cells were not cross-resistant to the novel compounds. Collateral sensitivity was observed for artesunic acid homodimer. Artesunic acid and artesunic acid homodimer induced G0/G1 cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, and formation of reactive oxygen species.
Chemoenzymatic Synthesis of Functional Sialyl LewisX Mimetics with a Heteroaromatic Core
2014
Functional mimetics of the sialyl Lewis(X) tetrasaccharide were prepared by the enzymatic sialylation of a 1,3-diglycosylated indole and a glycosyl azide, which was subsequently transformed into a 1,4-diglycosylated 1,2,3-triazole, by using the trans-sialidase of Trypanosoma cruzi. These compounds inhibited the binding of E-, L-, and P-selectin-coated nanoparticles to polyacrylamide-bound sialyl-Lewis(X) -containing neighboring sulfated tyrosine residues (sTyr/sLe(X) -PAA) at low or sub-millimolar concentrations. Except for E-selectin, the mimetics showed higher activities than the natural tetrasaccharide.
Study of the diurnal cycle of stressed vegetation for the improvement of fluorescence remote sensing
2006
Chlorophyll fluorescence (Chf) emission allows estimating the photosynthetic activity of vegetation - a key parameter for the carbon cycle models - in a quite direct way. However, measuring Chf is difficult because it represents a small fraction of the radiance to be measured by the sensor. This paper analyzes the relationship between the solar induced Chf emission and the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in plants under water stress condition. The solar induced fluorescence emission is measured at leaf level by means of three different methodologies. Firstly, an active modulated light fluorometer gives the relative fluorescence yield. Secondly, a quantitative measurement of the Ch…
