Abstract Introduction Physical activity levels are low in the general population and these levels decrease from childhood to adolescence, as well as from adolescence to adulthood. Active commuting (AC) is an opportunity to increase the physical activity levels. Local minimizers and gamma-convergence for nonlocal perimeters in Carnot groups

We prove the local minimality of halfspaces in Carnot groups for a class of nonlocal functionals usually addressed as nonlocal perimeters. Moreover, in a class of Carnot groups in which the De Giorgi's rectifiability Theorem holds, we provide a lower bound for the $\Gamma$-liminf of the rescaled energy in terms of the horizontal perimeter.

Heteroclinic contours and self-replicated solitary waves in a reaction–diffusion lattice with complex threshold excitation

Abstract The space–time dynamics of the network system modeling collective behavior of electrically coupled nonlinear cells is investigated. The dynamics of a local cell is described by the FitzHugh–Nagumo system with complex threshold excitation. Heteroclinic orbits defining traveling wave front solutions are investigated in a moving frame system. A heteroclinic contour formed by separatrix manifolds of two saddle-foci is found in the phase space. The existence of such structure indicates the appearance of complex wave patterns in the network. Inhibition of activated STAT5 in Bcr/Abl expressing leukemia cells with new pimozide derivatives.

STATs are transcription factors acting as intracellular signaling after stimulation with cytokines, growth factors and hormones. STAT5 is also constitutively active in many forms of cancers, including chronic myelogenous leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia and Hodgkin's lymphoma. Recently, literature reported that the neuroleptic drug pimozide inhibits STAT5 phosphorylation inducing apoptosis in CML cells. We undertook an investigation from pimozide structure, obtaining simple derivatives with cytotoxic and STAT5-inhibitory activity, two of them markedly more potent than pimozide.

MAP kinase p38 and its relation to T cell anergy and suppressor function of regulatory T cells

Diverse regulatory T cell populations (Treg) are important for the control of self tolerance and immune homeostasis. These include naturally occurring CD4+CD25+ Treg (nTreg) and induced Treg (iTreg). Tolerogenic dendritic cells, modulated by IL-10, are able to convert peripheral T cells into iTreg. These are anergic and characterized by a G(1) cell cycle arrest, dependent on elevated levels of the cdk inhibitor p27(Kip1). Identification of Tumor-Associated Autoantigens With SEREX

Serological analysis of tumor antigens by recombinant cDNA expression cloning (SEREX) allows the systematic cloning of tumor antigens recognized by the spontaneous autoantibody repertoire of cancer patients. For SEREX, cDNA expression libraries are constructed from fresh tumor specimens, packaged into lambda-phage vectors, and expressed recombinantly in Escherichia coli. Recombinant proteins expressed during the lytic infection of bacteria are transferred onto nitrocellulose membranes to be probed with diluted autologous patient serum for identification of clones reactive with high-titered IgG antibodies. This chapter describes the SEREX technology in detail.

Linear relationship between effective radius and precipitation water content near the top of convective clouds

Quantifying the precipitation within clouds is a crucial challenge to improve our current understanding of the Earth’s hydrological cycle. We have investigated the relationship between the effective radius of droplets and ice particles (re) and precipitation water content (PWC) measured by cloud probes near the top of growing convective cumuli. The data for this study were collected by aircraft measurements in clean and polluted conditions over the Amazon Basin and over the western tropical Atlantic in September 2014.
