Cardiovascular Damage Induced by Radiotherapy
2018
Radiotherapy is a fundamental therapeutic aid that in recent years has contributed significantly to improve the prognosis of cancer patients. Despite its great effectiveness, it can cause a wide spectrum of toxic effects. Among these, cardiovascular toxicity is very relevant, and it can occur even many years after the termination of treatment. The concomitant use of radiotherapy with other antineoplastic drugs, including new-generation tyrosine-kinase inhibitors or immunotherapy, can enhance its cardiotoxic effects. It is fundamental to know the cardiovascular toxic effects that are potentially linked to radiotherapy (RIHD: radiation-induced heart damage), to monitor patients who underwent …
Looking for Feminist Pragmatist Roots of Degrowth Ideas: Jane Addams, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Caroline Bartlett Crane
2022
The aim of the paper is a search of feminist pragmatist roots of degrowth ideas. The starting point is the question of whether in views of the members of the Progressive Movement the idea of progress has always implied the economic (and industrial) growth. Searching for counter-examples leads me to ideas of ecofeminism and feminist critics of capitalism in the previous turn of the centuries. The ideas of ecofeminism were developed by women associated with the Department of Sociology at the University of Chicago and the social settlement Hull House. They observed a link between the exploitation of subordinate members of a society and the degradation of nature in Western cultural values. The …
Early Vascular Aging in Normotensive Patients With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
2015
Connective tissue diseases, like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), are associated with early and accelerated atherosclerosis. Recently, the concept of “early vascular aging” (EVA) has been more widely accepted. Aortic stiffness is one of the important markers of EVA. We evaluated EVA and subclinical atherosclerosis, by measuring aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV) and carotid intima–media thickness (cIMT), in 50 normotensive patients with SLE (mean age: 39 ± 12 years). We compared these participants with 50 age- and sex-matched patients with essential hypertension (EH) and 20 healthy controls. Each participant underwent 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), aPWV, and cIMT me…
Modulating effects of humic acids on genotoxicity induced by water disinfectants in Cyprinus carpio
2005
The use of chlorinated disinfectants during drinking-water production has been shown to generate halogenated compounds as a result of interactions of humic acids with chlorine. Such chlorinated by-products have been shown to induce genotoxic effects and consumption of chlorinated drinking-water has been correlated with increased risk for cancer induction in human populations. The aim of this work was to test the potential genotoxic effects on circulating erythrocytes of the fish Cyprinus carpio exposed in vivo to well-waters disinfected with sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), chlorine dioxide (ClO2) or peracetic acid (CH3COO2H, PAA), in the absence or presence of standard humic acids (HA). The ef…

Parametric measurement of partial damage in building.
2015
The valuation of the property damage is a double appraisal that considers a before situation and an after situation to the damage, reported both to the same moment. An elementary measure of the partial damage is represented, in a first approximation, by the restoration’s cost, when the return of the original situation is possible and economically profitable, this last circumstance imposes that the cost is great or equal to the suffered damage. In the building practice, the restoration of the buildings is often combined with operations of substitution and integration. For the indemnity of the partial damage, the restoration’s cost also includes the lost incomes of the property for the period…
Confronto tra attività catalitica e fotocatalitica dell’eteropoliacido di Keggin H3PW12O40 supportato su ossidi o su nanotubi di carbonio
2015
Catalytic and catalytic photo-assisted dehydration of 2-propanol to form propene in gas-solid regime at atmospheric pressure and 80°C was carried out by using a Keggin heteropolyacid H3PW12O40 (PW12) supported on different oxides. Binary materials have been prepared by impregnation of PW12 on different commercial and home prepared supports (TiO2, SiO2 or carbon nanotubes). The supported Keggin PW12 species played a key role both for the catalytic and the photo-assisted catalytic reactions, due to their strong acidity and ability to form strong oxidant species under UV irradiation, respectively. The contemporary presence of heat and UV light improved the activity of almost all POM supported …
