Photocatalytic and Catalytic Oxidation of 2-Propanol over Au/TiO2-CeO2 Catalysts

Photocatalytic and catalytic oxidation of 2-propanol (representative VOC’s compound) were compared over mixed (Au)TiO2-CeO2-based catalysts. The role of support in Au catalyzed oxidation reaction under photo and dark conditions was studied. In the photocatalytic oxidation CeO2 had a negative effect on the performance towards the alcohol conversion of both TiO2-CeO2 and Au/TiO2-CeO2 catalysts, being Au/TiO2 the most active system. On the contrary mixed TiO2-CeO2 and Au/TiO2- CeO2 samples showed a higher catalytic oxidation efficiency for 2-propanol conversion compared to the single oxides.

In the present research study, a simple method was developed for the synthesis of three-dimensional flowerlike Fe3O4@Bi2O3 core–shell with g-C3N4 sheet nanocomposites. The X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electronic microscopy, transmission electron microscope, vibrating sample magnetometer, dynamic laser scattering analyzer and UV–Vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy were employed for the characterization of structure, purity and morphology of the resultant samples. Structural Tuning and Conformational Stability of Aromatic Oligoamide Foldamers

A series of aromatic oligoamide foldamers with two or three pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide units as their main folding motifs and varying aromatic building blocks as linkers have been synthetized to study the effects of the structural variation on the folding properties and conformational stability. Crystallographic studies showed that in the solid state the central linker unit either elongates the helices and more open S-shaped conformations, compresses the helices to more compact conformations or acts as a rigid spacer separating the pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide units, which for their part add the predictability of the conformational properties. Formation of dibutyl carbonate and butylcarbamate via CO2 insertion in titanium(IV) butoxide and reaction with n-butylamine

Abstract The species resulting from insertion of 12CO2 and 13CO2 into titanium(IV) butoxide is for the first time fully characterized by means of infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Results show formation of Ti-monobutylcarbonate, that easily undergoes nucleophilic attack by an aliphatic amine. The hydrolysis of the resulting species produces butylcarbamate and dibutylcarbonate as the only main products. Characterization results of the carbonate-like adduct, along with its reactivity with amine molecules open the route to new ways of CO2 utilization as building block for valuable organic compounds.

One-Pot, Clean Synthesis of Vanillic Acid from Ferulic Acid

Ferulic acid dissolved in water is selectively oxidized to vanillic acid in high yield (≈60 %) under remarkably mild and green conditions, namely at room temperature with air as primary oxidant, over a catalytic amount of nanostructured Bi2WO6. The process is general and opens the route to the selective oxidation of natural substances into derivatives of significant applicative relevance.

Deimatism: a neglected component of antipredator defence

Deimatic or ‘startle’ displays cause a receiver to recoil reflexively in response to a sudden change in sensory input. Deimatism is sometimes implicitly treated as a form of aposematism (unprofitability associated with a signal). However, the fundamental difference is, in order to provide protection, deimatism does not require a predator to have any learned or innate aversion. Instead, deimatism can confer a survival advantage by exploiting existing neural mechanisms in a way that releases a reflexive response in the predator. We discuss the differences among deimatism, aposematism, and forms of mimicry, and their ecological and evolutionary implications. We highlight outstanding questions …
