Survival and growth of transplantedFontinalis dalecarlica (Bryophyta) in controlled flow and short-term regulated flow sites in the Perhonjoki River,…
1999
Impoundment, channelisation and short-term regulation of the Perhonjoki river have caused changes in the distribution and abundance of aquatic mosses. While some moss species have colonised the beds in the channelised and short-term regulated part of the river, Fontinalis spp. are mainly restricted to the sites above the power plant where flow variability is low. Therefore, as a first step towards gaining a better understanding of the factors contributing to the distribution and abundance of Fontinalis dalecarlica (Bruch & Schimp, Fontinalaceae) in the Perhonjoki, a transplant experiment was conducted to test whether short-term flow regulation restricts the survival and growth of this speci…
LGBTQI+ icons between resistance and normalization: looking for mediatization of emotions in hashtags
2020
The mediatization of emotions emerges as an affordance of social media, the study of which involves paying attention to digital practices and to the construction and expression of public affection. This happens both for the great events and for the daily demonstrations of support or its denial. In this article we work on the phenomenon of the mediatization of emotions linked to two LGBTQI+ icons and expressed in hashtags on Twitter. Placing it in a specific context – the one of well-known television characters who have declared their homosexual orientation or transgender identity. The objective is to understand if the cloud of feelings they have created on Twitter is to be attributed to a t…
Partisanship, Ideology, and Selective Exposure: A Longitudinal Analysis of Media Consumption in Spain (2008–2019)
2022
Pulsed-Resource Dynamics Constrain the Evolution of Predator-Prey Interactions
2011
Although temporal variability in the physical environment plays a major role in population fluctuations, little is known about how it drives the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of species interactions. We studied experimentally how extrinsic resource pulses affect evolutionary and ecological dynamics between the prey bacterium Serratia marcescens and the predatory protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila. Predation increased the frequency of defensive, nonpigmented prey types, which bore competitive costs in terms of reduced maximum growth rate, most in a constant-resource environment. Furthermore, the predator densities of the pulsed-resource environment regularly fluctuated above and below …
A direct impedance tomography algorithm for locating small inhomogeneities
2003
Impedance tomography seeks to recover the electrical conductivity distribution inside a body from measurements of current flows and voltages on its surface. In its most general form impedance tomography is quite ill-posed, but when additional a-priori information is admitted the situation changes dramatically. In this paper we consider the case where the goal is to find a number of small objects (inhomogeneities) inside an otherwise known conductor. Taking advantage of the smallness of the inhomogeneities, we can use asymptotic analysis to design a direct (i.e., non-iterative) reconstruction algorithm for the determination of their locations. The viability of this direct approach is documen…
Explicit Characterization of Inclusions in Electrical Impedance Tomography
2001
In electrical impedance tomography one seeks to recover the spatial conductivity distribution inside a body from knowledge of the Neumann--Dirichlet map. In many practically relevant situations the conductivity is smooth apart from some inhomogeneities where the conductivity jumps to a higher or lower value. An explicit characterization of these inclusions is developed in this paper. To this end a class of dipole-like indicator functions is introduced, for which one has to check whether their boundary values are contained in the range of an operator determined by the measured Neumann--Dirichlet map. It is shown that this holds true if and only if the dipole singularity lies inside the inhom…
An automatic system for humanoid dance creation
2016
Abstract The paper describes a novel approach to allow a robot to dance following musical rhythm. The proposed system generates a dance for a humanoid robot through the combination of basic movements synchronized with the music. The system made up of three parts: the extraction of features from audio file, estimation of movements through the Hidden Markov Models and, finally, the generation of dance. Starting from a set of given movements, the robot choices sequence of movements a suitable Hidden Markov Model, and synchronize them processing musical input. The proposed approach has the advantage that movement execution probabilities could be changed according evaluation of the dance executi…
Technological, Organisational and Socio-Interactional Affordances in Simulation-Based Collaborative Learning
2021
Analysis of the applicability of a learning technology requires an evaluation of how the affordances of the learning environment respond to users’ needs. We examine affordances in a simulation-based collaborative learning environment from the learners’ viewpoint. Our analysis focuses on three types of affordances: technological, organisational and socio-interactional. The findings show how teams of learners employ the different types of affordances in their collaborative tasks. In addition, our analysis illustrates the interdependent and interlinked nature of the affordances. We offer an analytical understanding of the dynamics among different kinds of affordances and show how they can be a…
Capabilities and Affordances in the ICT4D Context
2019
Part 1: Pushing the Boundaries - New Research Methods, Theory and Philosophy in ICT4D; International audience; The paper examines two concepts that have been frequently used in Information and Communications Technologies for Development (ICT4D) research, capabilities and affordance. We seek to delineate their similarities, their differences, and their accurate application in ICT4D. Both concepts connote a space of opportunities, both are relational between artefact and human agency when applied in ICT4D, and both entail potential rather than actualisation of possibilities. By comparing the two at some length, we hope to generate a more refined understanding of both capabilities and affordan…
Approximate 3-Dimensional Electrical Impedance Imaging
2001
We discuss a new approach to three-dimensional electrical impedance imaging based on a reduction of the information to be demanded from a reconstruction algorithm. Images are obtained from a single measurement by suitably simplifying the geometry of the measuring chamber and by restricting the nature of the object to be imaged and the information required from the image. In particular we seek to establish the existence or non-existence of a single object (or a small number of objects) in a homogeneous background and the location of the former in the (x,y)-plane defined by the measuring electrodes. Given in addition the conductivity of the object rough estimates of its position along the z-a…
