Calculation of the characteristic impedance of microstrips using a full-wave 2-D FDTD scheme
1997
The frequency dependence of the characteristic impedance of microstrip lines has been investigated by many authors using 3D-FDTD formulations. In the present letter, a two-dimensional FDTD scheme is used to calculate both the propagation constant and the characteristic impedance of the fundamental quasi-TEM mode in a microstrip which, in fact, is a hybrid mode. Because of the substantial reduction of computer resources required for the calculations, this method can be used as a design tool. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Local path planning in a complex environment for self-driving car
2014
This paper introduces an local path planning algorithm for the self-driving car in a complex environment. The proposed algorithm is composed of three parts: the novel path representation, the collision detection and the path modification using a voronoi cell. The novel path representation provides convenience for checking the collision and modifying the path and continuous control input for steering wheel rather than way point navigation. The proposed algorithm were applied to the self-driving car, EureCar(KAIST) and its applicability and feasibility of real time use were validated.
A capacitor selector tool for on-board PDN designs in multigigabit applications
2011
This paper presents a capacitor selector software tool for a proper on-board Power Distribution Network (PDN) design in those high-speed applications which have strict requirements on voltage noise up to the first hundreds of megahertz. Current commercial tools for PDN design only offer a manual choice of the capacitor value and their number simulating the board impedance profile. This manual resolution becomes very hard when the design has high power consumption and noise requirements are very strict. The aim of this software is to solve a basic on-board PDN design minimizing the number of "change simulate-analyze" iterations that have to be carried out in the manual PDN design. This softw…
Impedance estimation of FEA's grid in fiji islands by V-I measurement by using the synchronous reference frame-PLL
2017
In recent years there has been a significant increase in distributed renewable energy generation feeding into the grid, with resulting detriment of the stability of the network, since present networks have not been designed for this purpose. To feed-in these renewable energy sources with minimum impact, it is essential to know a few grid parameters (voltage, current, grid impedance) at the point in which power supply is convenient. For this purpose in this paper an algorithm is proposed to obtain the estimated network impedance. This algorithm operates in time domain by a synchronous reference coordinate transformation, it requires only the measurement of the phase voltage with no-load and …
Control of solid-state fault current limiter for DG-integrated distribution systems
2017
Fault current limier (FCL) is a device that limits the system current under fault conditions without disconnecting the system and affecting the power system protection components such as circuit breakers. Many types of FCLs have been proposed to limit the magnitude of the fault current. Solid-state fault current limiters (SSFCLs) can limit the peak value of the fault current by applying several methods, such as controlling the system impedance or controlling the voltage that appears across the fault. In this paper, a new control scheme for the SSFCL circuit is presented. The control method is based on controlling the duty cycle of solid state switches to control the rms value of the system …
A Technique for Power Supply Harmonic Impedance Estimation Using a Controlled Voltage Disturbance
2002
A method for power system impedance estimation is presented. The method employs a power converter to inject a voltage transient onto the supply system. As the technique employs controlled power electronic devices it may be used as a stand alone piece of a portable measurement equipment, or it may be embedded into the functions of an active shunt filter for improved harmonic control. The impedance is estimated through correlation of the measured voltage and current transients. Simulations and experimental results demonstrate the measurement technique is highly accurate and effective.

Binge-Watching as Case of Escapist Entertainment Use
2021
Although the concept of escapism is widely used in entertainment research, it lacks theoretical and empirical differentiation. Based on the transactional model of stress and coping, we extend previous attempts to conceptualize escapism as a form of emotion-focused avoidance coping. In contrast to the primarily negative connotation of escapism found in prior research, we propose that escapist entertainment use may be a functional coping strategy in some situations and may thus have beneficial effects on the well-being of media users. To develop and illustrate our perspective, we turn to binge-watching as a prominent example of escapist entertainment use. We show exemplarily how escapist bing…
Islands of biogeodiversity in arid lands on a polygons map study: Detecting scale invariance patterns from natural resources maps.
2016
Many maps (geology, hydrology, soil, vegetation, etc.) are created to inventory natural resources. Each of these resources is mapped using a unique set of criteria, including scales and taxonomies. Past research indicates that comparing results of related maps (e.g., soil and geology maps) may aid in identifying mapping deficiencies. Therefore, this study was undertaken in Almeria Province, Spain to (i) compare the underlying map structures of soil and vegetation maps and (ii) investigate if a vegetation map can provide useful soil information that was not shown on a soil map. Soil and vegetation maps were imported into ArcGIS 10.1 for spatial analysis, and results then exported to Microsof…
