The Association of H1N1 Pandemic Influenza with Congenital Anomaly Prevalence in Europe
2015
BACKGROUND: In the context of the European Surveillance of Congenital Anomalies (EUROCAT) surveillance response to the 2009 influenza pandemic, we sought to establish whether there was a detectable increase of congenital anomaly prevalence among pregnancies exposed to influenza seasons in general, and whether any increase was greater during the 2009 pandemic than during other seasons.METHODS: We performed an ecologic time series analysis based on 26,967 pregnancies with nonchromosomal congenital anomaly conceived from January 2007 to March 2011, reported by 15 EUROCAT registries. Analysis was performed for EUROCAT-defined anomaly subgroups, divided by whether there was a prior hypothesis of…
Natural and modified history of isolated ventricular septal defect: A 17-year study
1992
We studied 882 cases of isolated ventricular septal defect (VSD) diagnosed from 1971 to 1988 with a mean follow-up period of 9.5 years. They represent 22.5% of all congenital heart defects diagnosed in this period. Six hundred eighty-three children (77.4%) did not develop symptoms, had small defects, and the rate of spontaneous closure was high (40.2%). The remaining 199 children presented symptoms; at the initial catheterization 25, 65, 107, and 2 cases were grouped in hemodynamic groups 2, 3, 4, and 5-6, respectively, on the basis of pulmonary flow and resistance. Only seven patients (0.7%) developed aortic regurgitation, and only five patients (0.5%) developed infective endocarditis. Com…

Early cardiac unloading with ImpellaCP™ in acute myocardial infarction with ventricular septal defect
2020
Abstract Despite a relative contraindication, mechanical support with Impella™ left ventricular assist device has already been described for ischaemic ventricular septal defect treatment, either as a bridge to surgery, as intraoperative mechanical haemodynamic support, or to ensure intraprocedural haemodynamic stability during device closure. We describe two cases of ventricular septal defect complicating acute myocardial infarction, where the percutaneous ImpellaCP was implanted early (differently than previously described) with the aim of preventing haemodynamic instability, while deferring surgical repair. We present a report of haemodynamic, echocardiographic, biochemical, and clinical …
Numerical simulation of transcatheter mitral valve replacement: The dynamic implication of LVOT obstruction in the valve-in-ring case.
2022
Transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) has been used for “off-label” treatment when annuloplasty band ring for mitral repair fails. However, the complex anatomy and function of the mitral valve may lead to fatal complications as a result of the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction in TMVR. We report the structural and hemodynamic response of LVOT obstruction resulting from TMVR with the Edwards SAPIEN 3 Ultra (S3) device. We modified the original Living Heart Human Model (LHHM) to account for a failed mitral valve with an annuloplasty band ring and simulated the cardiac beating condition in the setting of S3 device implantation. Findings demonstrated a high dynamic behav…
Cardiac imaging in congenital heart disease during the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic: Recommendations from the Working Group on Congenital Heart …
2020
: The recent outbreak of 2019 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 is having major repercussions on healthcare services provision in Italy and worldwide. Data suggest the virus has a strong impact on the cardiovascular system, and cardiac imaging will play an important role in patients affected by coronavirus disease-2019. Although paediatric patients are mildly affected, they represent a clear accelerator in spreading the virus, and healthcare workers are at higher risk of infection. The aim of this position paper is to provide clinical recommendation regarding the execution of imaging investigations for the cardiac diagnostic work-up of paediatric patients with suspected or con…

Incidence of PV module rated power tolerances on PV system energy production
2016
Discussing the electrical energy production of a PV system realized by PV modules with a large range of tolerance for the rated power values is the aim of this paper. In particular, the paper shows how the incidence of tolerance can be significant, in terms of output power reduction, when the PV system works in partial shading condition. For this issue, using a tool developed for this purpose, several simulations have been run, which consider different tolerance values for the module rated power and different shading patterns for the PV array. The authors quantify the peak power values of the different system configurations, showing the importance of the choice of modules with reduced toler…
Generation of defects in amorphous SiO(2) assisted by two-step absorption on impurity sites.
2011
Generation of the Si dangling bond defect in amorphous SiO(2) (E' centre) induced by tunable pulsed UV laser radiation was investigated by in situ optical absorption measurements. The defect generation efficiency peaks when the photon energy equals ∼5.1 eV, it depends quadratically on laser intensity and is correlated with the native linear absorption due to Ge impurities. We propose a model in which the generation of E' is assisted by a two-step absorption process occurring on Ge impurity sites.
