Rheological and mechanical properties of biodegradable nanocomposites
2018
Polymer nanocomposites have gained huge interest over the last decade. However, traditional thermoplastic nanocomposites do not match the rising concern about environmental issues. Therefore, during the last years, the search for biodegradable polymer nanocomposites is gaining importance. Most of biobased (i.e. based on biodegradable/bioderived polymer matrices) nanocomposites have poly(lactic acid), PLA, as matrix. However, it is of clear interest to take into account also different biobased polymer matrices, such as MaterBi. In this work, we prepared bionanocomposites containing MaterBi or a PLA-based polymer matrix, with two different kinds of nanofillers (organomodified clay and nanosiz…
Shear influences on the solubility of LDPE in ethene
1998
Abstract The influence of shear on the demixing pressures of the binary system ethene/polyethene was determined viscometrically in the temperature range 147–195°C up to pressures of 1400 bar at polymer concentrations of 18.4, 22.5 and 27.4 wt%, respectively. Autoclaves were used to prepare the solutions and to measure cloud points for the stagnant system. A high-pressure viscometer was used to perform experiments at shear rates γ up to 1500 s −1 . Under all conditions investigated here the two-phase area grows as γ becomes larger and the demixing pressures increase up to 23 bar. This observation is in contrast to theoretical expectation according to which it should be the one-phase region w…
Reactive dual-component compatibilizers for polycarbonate/high-density polyethylene blends
1995
Enhanced compatibility for blends of polycarbonate with high-density polyethylene has been achieved with the addition of 5 wt% compatibilizers composed of 1 : 1 mixtures of phenoxy and the sodium ionomer of an ethylene methacrylic acid copolymer at two different levels of neutralization. Both components of the compatibilizer have been found to be capable of reacting with the polycarbonate phase to produce branched polymer chains. These impart a degree of compatibilization in polycarbonate/high-density polyethylene blends, however at higher levels of sodium in the compatibilizer the polycarbonate phase undergoes crosslinking reactions, causing severe embrittlement. Compatibilization effects …
Ion bombardment of polyethylene—influence of polymer structure
2007
Abstract Polyethylenes of various macromolecular and supermolecular structures were studied from the point of view of their susceptibility to an ion beam treatment. An influence of molecular weight (Mw), molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) and the degree of branching were compared within the set of low-density polyethylenes (LDPE) studied. An influence of the length of branches was compared between LDPE, linear low-density (LLDPE) and high-density (HDPE) polyethylenes. An influence of the degree of crystallinity and the morphology of a crystalline phase were compared for HDPE samples solidified under various thermal conditions and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Plate p…
Characterization and Reprocessing of Greenhouse Films.
2001
Films for greenhouses are an attractive source of post-consumer plastic materials because they are mainly made of polyethylene and can be easily collected in large amounts in small zones. The types of polymers for this application are, however, increasing and the films contain not only additives and stabilisers, but also fertiliser and pesticide residues. Finally, the extent of photooxidative degradation undergone during the use can strongly influence the recycling operations and the final properties of the secondary material. In this work, a complete characterisation of post-consumer films for greenhouses has been carried out and the properties of the recycled material have been correlated…
Effect of the Components Molar Mass and of the Mixing Conditions on the Compatibilization of PE/LCP Blends by PE-g-LCP Copolymers
1999
The rheology, morphology, and mechanical properties of blends of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with a semiflexible liquid crystalline copolyester (SBH) were studied in order to assess the compatibilizing ability of added PE-g-SBH copolymers, and its dependence on the molar mass of the PE matrix, and on the technique used for blend preparation. The PE-g-SBH copolymers were synthesized as described in previous articles, either by the polycondensation of the SBH monomers in the presence of a functionalized PE sample containing free carboxyl groups, or by reactive blending of the latter polymer with preformed SBH. Two samples of HDPE having different molar masses, and two samples of SBH with…
Effect of stress and temperature on the thermomechanical degradation of a PE-LD/OMMT nanocomposites
2014
Thermomechanical degradation of nanocomposites is a topical issue that has not been fully investigated as demonstrated by the low number of papers available in the literature regarding this spe- cific aspect. In particular, with regards to low density polyethylene/clay nanocomposites, the degrada- tion behavior is very complex since it involves the degradation paths of both the polymer matrix and the organomodified nanoclay. In the present work, the effects of mechanical stress and temperature on the thermomechanical behavior of PE-LD/organomodified clay nanocomposites and the degradation paths were investigated by rheological, FT-IR and mechanical methods. The results have shown that the t…
Recycling and Thermomechanical Degradation of LDPE/Modified Clay Nanocomposites
2013
The special features of polymer nanocomposites are continually gaining interest both in academia and in industry. The latter is especially experiencing an increase in interest towards this class of polymer composites, and this is leading to the first concerns about their reprocessing and reciclability. Here, a systematic study on the behavior of LDPE/Cloisite 15A systems upon reprocessing in a single-screw extruder is described, focusing on rheological, mechanical, and morphological properties changes. The investigated systems show a very complex thermomechanical degradation behavior, with the degradation of the clay modifier and different degradation paths involving the polymer matrix; all…
Recycling of high density polyethylene containers
1997
The recycling of homogeneous high density polyethylene from containers for liquids gives rise to materials having mechanical properties that are strongly dependent on the reprocessing apparatus and the processing conditions. The thermomechanical degradation during processing gives rise to different modifications of the structure depending on the temperature, residence time and applied stress. In general, it is possible to say that if the reprocessing operations are carried out in apparatus with low residence time, the mechanical and rheological properties of the raw materials are only slightly influenced by the recycling operations. Significant degradation phenomena and reduction of some me…
1982
The stress relaxation behaviour after compression yielding of two semicrystalline polymers, a low density polyethylene and an isotactic polypropylene, is investigated. Data taken at several strains, reached with different sample loading rates, are considered. Master curves are obtained by means of dimensionless stress and time measures, similar to those recently adopted for some amorphous polymers.
