Dairy Debaryomyces hansenii strains produce the antihypertensive casein-derived peptides LHLPLP and HLPLP

2015

The ability of dairy Debaryomyces hansenii, Kluyveromyces lactis and Kluyveromyces marxianus strains to release the casein-derived antihypertensive sequences RYLGY, AYFYPEL, LHLPLP, HLPLP, VPP and/or IPP was examined. Yeast strains were grown in medium with casein as sole nitrogen source and the yeast casein hydrolysates (CSHs) were analysed by HPLC-MS/MS to search for the six antihypertensive sequences. Only LHLPLP and HLPLP were identified in CSHs and exclusively in D. hansenii Dh1 and Dh14 hydrolysates in which both antihypertensive sequences represented approximately 6 (CSH Dh1) and 10% (CSH Dh14) of total peptide content. In addition, a complete analysis of selected CSHs by HPLC-MS/MS …

Thermal decomposition study of major refuse derived fuel components

2018

Abstract Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) composed on biomass, paper, textiles, wood, synthetic polymers and other combustible materials is an alternative energy resource to implement Waste-to-Energy strategy. The aim of this study is to investigate the thermal decomposition characteristics of materials forming RDF by thermogravimetric analysis. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis of RDF components demonstrates major differences in processes behind the thermal decomposition processes of waste components. Biomass decomposition can be divided into two distinct stages for wood, cotton, cotton wool and other biomass samples whereas three distinct stages can be distinguished for cardboard and paper samples…

Impact of Wavelet Kernels on Predictive Capability of Radiomic Features: A Case Study on COVID-19 Chest X-ray Images

2023

Radiomic analysis allows for the detection of imaging biomarkers supporting decision-making processes in clinical environments, from diagnosis to prognosis. Frequently, the original set of radiomic features is augmented by considering high-level features, such as wavelet transforms. However, several wavelets families (so called kernels) are able to generate different multi-resolution representations of the original image, and which of them produces more salient images is not yet clear. In this study, an in-depth analysis is performed by comparing different wavelet kernels and by evaluating their impact on predictive capabilities of radiomic models. A dataset composed of 1589 chest X-ray ima…

Managing Municipal Solid Waste: Energetic and Environmetal Comparison among different options

2001

Goal. This research aims to assess the environmental effects of integrated strategies in a municipal waste management system. In particular, analysis is focused on a waste stream in Palermo, where landfill involves the prompt disposal of the most waste after collection. The current local management system is compared with two integrated waste management alternatives. Both the options comply with Italian regulations, but each one predicts adopting the available technologies in different ways. Methods and objectives. Energetic and environmental balances are carried out in each management system referring to local waste composition in order to quantify energy consumption, the recovery of mater…

Huntingtin controls neurotrophic support and survival of neurons by enhancing BDNF vesicular transport along microtubules.

2004

AbstractPolyglutamine expansion (polyQ) in the protein huntingtin is pathogenic and responsible for the neuronal toxicity associated with Huntington's disease (HD). Although wild-type huntingtin possesses antiapoptotic properties, the relationship between the neuroprotective functions of huntingtin and pathogenesis of HD remains unclear. Here, we show that huntingtin specifically enhances vesicular transport of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) along microtubules. Huntingtin-mediated transport involves huntingtin-associated protein-1 (HAP1) and the p150Glued subunit of dynactin, an essential component of molecular motors. BDNF transport is attenuated both in the disease context and b…

An easy access to fused chromanones via rhodium catalyzed oxidative coupling of salicylaldehydes with heterobicyclic olefins

2016

Abstract Herein we describe a detailed study on the rhodium catalyzed oxidative coupling of salicylaldehydes with heterobicyclic olefins such as diazabicyclic olefins and urea-derived bicyclic olefins. The developed method provides an ideal route to fused chromanone systems in a single synthetic step. Moreover, the scope of this methodology was extended to different oxa/aza-bridged bicyclic urea derivatives.

Minimal information for studies of extracellular vesicles 2018 (MISEV2018):a position statement of the International Society for Extracellular Vesicl…

2018

The last decade has seen a sharp increase in the number of scientific publications describing physiological and pathological functions of extracellular vesicles (EVs), a collective term covering various subtypes of cell-released, membranous structures, called exosomes, microvesicles, microparticles, ectosomes, oncosomes, apoptotic bodies, and many other names. However, specific issues arise when working with these entities, whose size and amount often make them difficult to obtain as relatively pure preparations, and to characterize properly. The International Society for Extracellular Vesicles (ISEV) proposed Minimal Information for Studies of Extracellular Vesicles ("MISEV") guidelines fo…

Biochar from Waste Derived Fuels as Low-Cost Adsorbent for Waste Hydrocarbons

2020

Abstract The aim of this study is to prove technical feasibility of combined refuse derived fuel (RDF) torrefaction and oily wastewater treatment approach by using RDF derived biochar as a sorption media. Biochars prepared from refuse derived fuels in torrefaction, carbonization and pyrolysis modes were analysed as fuels and as hydrocarbon sorbents. Changes of elemental composition and properties of material during thermal treatment and subsequent washing process have been analysed. Experimental evaluation of sorption behaviour of toluene and diesel fuel on obtained biochar performed. Our results show that torrefaction/carbonization of RDF coupled with the subsequent washing of biochar is a…
