Based on Alison Bechdel's autobiographical essay Are You My Mother?, this article is a discussion on two boundaries of the essay : a generic boundary between essay and autobiography, questioned by the possibility of autobiographical essay, and an intermedial boundary challenged by the development of graphic essays in comics. In the present work, we try to provide some understanding about the factors underlying the directional tendencies, by examining the impact of biomechanical constraints and cultural habits on directionality in graphic movements. French and Syrian subjects, children and adults, were compared in six experiments in order, to put in evidence the cognitive and psychomotor differences caused by the fact that the Eastern and Western cultures oppose on the directionality of writing and reading habits, and that the two hands are opposite in the directionality by adopting movements determined by biomechanical constraints. La bande dessinée espagnole de l’après-franquisme, à contre-courant de tous les autres secteurs de l’édition depuis 20 ans, n’a jamais témoigné d’un grand intérêt pour le sujet de la Guerre civile qui a déchiré l’Espagne entre 1936 et 1939. Autre sujet d’étonnement, les représentations qu’elle a pu en faire s’opposent radicalement au schéma classique et attendu de la bande dessinée d’aventure qui exalte la figure du héros de guerre.
