Detection of exercise load-associated differences in hip muscles by texture analysis
2014
We examined whether specific physical exercise loading is associated with texture parameters from hip muscles scanned with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Ninety-one female athletes representing five distinct exercise-loading groups (high-impact, odd-impact, low-impact, nonimpact and high-magnitude) and 20 nonathletic female controls underwent MRI of the hip. Texture parameters were computed from the MRI images of four hip muscles (gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, iliopsoas and obturator internus). Differences in muscle texture between the athlete groups and the controls were evaluated using Mann-Whitney U-test. Significant (P < 0.05) textural differences were found between the high-impac…
Optimization of a Time-to-Digital Converter and a coincidence map algorithm for TOF-PET applications
2015
This contribution describes the optimization of a multichannel high resolution Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC) in a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) initially capable of obtaining time resolutions below 100ps for multiple channels. Due to its fast propagation capability it has taken advantage of the FPGA internal carry logic for accurate time measurements. Furthermore, the implementation of the TDC has been performed in different clock regions and tested with different frequencies as well, achieving improvements of up to 50% for a pair of channels. Moreover, since the TDC is potentially going to be used in a trigger system for Positron Emission Tomography (PET), the algorithm for coinci…
Analyzing the metrics of the perceptual space in a new multistage physiological colour vision model
2009
In this work, the metric of a new multistage colour vision model, ATTD05, is assessed and a new colour difference formula is suggested. Firstly, the uniformity of the ATTD05 colour space was compared with that of CIECAM02 for some Munsell samples, because if the model yields a uniform perceptual space, we will be able to implement a colour difference formula as a Euclidian distance between two points. Secondly, we developed a new space based on the perceptual descriptors of the model: brightness, hue, colourfulness, and saturation. After that, we calculated the free parameters of the space that better fit the measured and experimental data of two datasets (small-magnitude and large-magnitud…
Influence of nicotine on machined- and anodized-surface implants. Histometric analysis
2017
Background The nicotine may generate a influence on bone repair and longevity of dental implants. This fact makes studies to improve the surface of the implants are constantly conducted. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of subcutaneous nicotine injection in the osseointegration process on different implant surfaces, through histomorphometric analysis. Material and Methods Therefore, twenty-two male rabbits were randomly distributed into two groups according to the subcutaneous injections: (1) nicotine, 3 mg/day/kg and (2) 0.9% NaCI, 3 mL/day/kg, three times a day. Subgroups were then designated - machined and anodized dental implants were installed in the right and left tibia bone…
Autonomic, hormonal, and subjective responses to a modified version of the TSST: a pilot study
2021
Sport and Quality of Life
2022
Sex Differences in the Behavioral and Synaptic Consequences of a Single in vivo Exposure to the Synthetic Cannabimimetic WIN55,212-2 at Puberty and A…
2019
Heavy cannabis consumption among adolescents is associated with significant and lasting neurobiological, psychological and health consequences that depend on the age of first use. Chronic exposure to cannabinoid agonists during the perinatal period or adolescence alters social behavior and prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity in adult rats. However, sex differences on social behavior as well as PFC synaptic plasticity after acute cannabinoid activation remain poorly explored. Here, we determined that the consequences of a single in vivo exposure to the synthetic cannabimimetic WIN55,212-2 differently affected PFC neuronal and synaptic functions after 24 h in male and female rats during the pube…
Tomato peel drying and carotenoids stability of the extracts
2014
Summary Tomato peels were firstly dried by different methods (hot air, freeze-drying, and fluidized bed drying) to evaluate the recovery of lycopene, β-carotene and DPPH radical scavenging activity. Comparison of the results showed that hot air drying at 50 °C was a suitable method and alternative to freeze-drying to preserve carotenoids compounds and antioxidant activity in tomato peels. Then, ethanol/ethyl acetate (1:1) extracts from tomato peel, previously dried at 50 °C by hot air, were submitted to heat (100 °C) and light treatment (1000 lumen) to evaluate their stability as natural food dyes. Heating of the extracts caused a progressive reduction of total carotenoids, up to about 30% …
Simulation of first- and second-order transitions in asymmetric polymer mixtures
1993
The critical properties of dense asymmetric binary polymer mixtures are studied by grand canonical simulations within the framework of the 3-dimensional bond fluctuation lattice model. The monomers interact with each other via a potential ranging over the entire first peak of the pair distribution. An asymmetry is realized by giving the ratio of interactions λ = ∈AA/∈BB between monomers of the A-species and of the B-species a value different from 1. Using multiple histogram extrapolation techniques for the data analysis, the two phase region, which is a line of first-order transitions driven by the chemical potential difference, and the critical point are determined for a mixture of chains …
The thermal decomposition of azo-bis-isobutyronitrile in a series of 10 solvents was investigated. The reaction is strictly of first order.…
