The combined effects of CO2, ozone and drought on rubisco and nitrogen metabolism of young oak trees (Quercus petraea) A phytotron study

Abstract In this phytotron experiment we investigated the influence of increased CO 2 , O 3 and drought on the content of soluble proteins and some enzymes of carbon and nitrogen metabolism. We found that the amounts of soluble proteins and the large subunit of the rubisco per fresh weight in young oak leaves declined under conditions of increasing levels of CO 2 and after temporary water stress. The activities of nitrite reductase and glutamine synthetase were reduced when O 3 and CO 2 levels were raised.

Abstract Determination of organic pollutants in environmental samples presents great difficulties due to the lack of sensitivity and selectivity in many of the existing analytical methods. In this work, the efficiency of materials based on silica structures containing bounded γ-cyclodextrin has been evaluated to determinate phenolic compounds and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in air and water samples, respectively, in comparison with materials made of β-cyclodextrin. The sponge siliceous spicules are formed enzymatically via silicatein, in contrast to other siliceous biominerals. Originally, silicatein had been described as a major structural protein of the spicules that has the property to allow a specific deposition of silica onto their surface. More recently, it had been unequivocally demonstrated that silicatein displays a genuine enzyme activity, initiating and maintaining silica biopolycondensation at low precursor concentrations (<2 mM). Six new hybrid materials composed of carbon nanohorns (CNHs) and highly cross-linked imidazolium salts were easily synthesized using a one-step procedure based on the radical oligomerization of bis-vinylimidazolium salts (bVImiX) in the presence of pristine CNHs. The hybrid materials were characterized and employed as the sole catalysts for the conversion of carbon dioxide into cyclic carbonate by reaction with epoxides. Three laboratory-scale peat biofilters were operated at 90 s empty bed residence time (EBRT) for over a year. Biodegradation of ethyl acetate, toluene, or a 1:1 mixture were investigated. In first stage, inlet concentration was progressively increased from 0.4 to 4.5 g/m3. The maximum elimination capacity (EC) found for ethyl acetate was 190 gC/m3·h, and it was not affected by toluene. The maximum EC found for toluene as a sole contaminant was 150 gC/m3·h, but the presence of ethyl acetate decreased the toluene maximum EC to 80 gC/m3·h. The oxygenation of n-butyl and n-butoxy chains bonded to silica with methyl(trifluoromethyl)dioxirane (1) revealed the ability of the silica matrix to release electron density toward the reacting C(2)-H σ-bond through the Si-C(1) and Si-O(1) σ-bonds connecting the alkyl chain to the surface (silicon β-effect). The silica surface impedes neither the alkyl chain adopting the conformation required for the silicon β-effect nor dioxirane 1 approaching the reactive C(2) methylene group. Evanescent wave-initiated photopolymerisation in an optically wave guiding PTFE-coated fused silica capillary using light-emitting diode as a light source, is established here as a way to fabricate monolithic porous layer open-tubular capillary columns with a potential in capillary separation methods; application of the obtained open-tubular columns as enzymatic microreactors for on-line protein digestion is demonstrated.
