Perceptual adaptive insensitivity for support vector machine image coding.

2005

Support vector machine (SVM) learning has been recently proposed for image compression in the frequency domain using a constant epsilon-insensitivity zone by Robinson and Kecman. However, according to the statistical properties of natural images and the properties of human perception, a constant insensitivity makes sense in the spatial domain but it is certainly not a good option in a frequency domain. In fact, in their approach, they made a fixed low-pass assumption as the number of discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients to be used in the training was limited. This paper extends the work of Robinson and Kecman by proposing the use of adaptive insensitivity SVMs [2] for image coding u…

Power estimation for non-standardized multisite studies

2016

A concern for researchers planning multisite studies is that scanner and T1-weighted sequence-related biases on regional volumes could overshadow true effects, especially for studies with a heterogeneous set of scanners and sequences. Current approaches attempt to harmonize data by standardizing hardware, pulse sequences, and protocols, or by calibrating across sites using phantom-based corrections to ensure the same raw image intensities. We propose to avoid harmonization and phantom-based correction entirely. We hypothesized that the bias of estimated regional volumes is scaled between sites due to the contrast and gradient distortion differences between scanners and sequences. Given this…

The cone of gaze

2011

Gaze direction is an important cue that regulates social interactions. Although humans are very accurate in determining gaze directions in general, they have a surprisingly liberal criterion for the presence of mutual gaze. We first established a psychophysical task to measure the cone of gaze, which required observers to adjust the eyes of a virtual head to the margins of the area of mutual gaze. Then we examined differences between 2D, 3D, and genuine real life gaze. Finally, the tolerance for image distortions when the virtual head is not viewed from the proper vantage point was investigated. Gaze direction was remarkably robust toward loss in detail and distortion. Important lessons for…

Image quality metric based on multidimensional contrast perception models

1999

Abstract The procedure to compute the subjective difference between two input images should be equivalent to a straightforward difference between their perceived versions, hence reliable subjective difference metrics must be founded on a proper perception model. For image distortion evaluation purposes, perception can be considered as a set of signal transforms that successively map the original image in the spatial domain into a feature and a response space. The properties of the spatial pattern analyzers involved in these transforms determine the geometry of these different signal representation domains. In this work the general relations between the sensitivity of the human visual system…

RF-Based Human Activity Recognition: A Non-stationary Channel Model Incorporating the Impact of Phase Distortions

2019

This paper proposes a non-stationary channel model that captures the impact of the time-variant (TV) phase distortion caused by hardware imperfections. The model allows for studying the spectrogram of in-home radio channels influenced by walking activities of the home user under realistic non-stationary propagation conditions. The resolution of the spectrogram is investigated for the von-Mises distribution of the phase distortion. It is shown that high-entropy distributions considerably mask fingerprints of the user activity on the spectrogram of the channel. For an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system, a computationally simple method for mitigating the undesired phase r…

Calibration of a three-dimensional reconstruction system using a structured light source

2002

We present a method for calibrating a range finder system composed of a camera and a structured light source. The system is used to reconstruct the three-dimensional (3-D) surface of an object. This is achieved by projecting a pattern, represented by a set of regularly spaced spots, on the surface of the object using the structured light source. An image of the illuminated object is next taken and by analyzing the distortion of the projected pattern, the 3-D surface of the object can be reconstructed. This reconstruction operation can be envisaged only if the system is calibrated. Instead of using a classical calibration method, which is based on the determination of the matrices that chara…

Convolutional Neural Network for Blind Mesh Visual Quality Assessment Using 3D Visual Saliency

2018

In this work, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) framework to estimate the perceived visual quality of 3D meshes without having access to the reference. The proposed CNN architecture is fed by small patches selected carefully according to their level of saliency. To do so, the visual saliency of the 3D mesh is computed, then we render 2D projections from the 3D mesh and its corresponding 3D saliency map. Afterward, the obtained views are split to obtain 2D small patches that pass through a saliency filter to select the most relevant patches. Experiments are conducted on two MVQ assessment databases, and the results show that the trained CNN achieves good rates in terms of corre…

Subpixel determination of imperfect circles characteristics

2008

This article deals with the problem of the determination of characteristics of imperfect circular objects in discrete images, namely the radius and center coordinates. To limit distortion, a multi-level method based on active contours was developed. Its originality is to furnish a set of geometric envelopes in one pass, with a correspondence between grayscale and a regularity scale. The adequacy of this approach was tested with several methods, among them is the Radon-based method. More particularly, this study indicates the relevance of the use of active contours combined with a Radon transform-based method which was improved using a fitting considering the discrete implementation of the R…

Measurement of Simplified Single- And Three-Phase Parameters for Harmonic Emission Assessment Based on IEEE 1459-2010

2021

This article investigates the feasibility of using a simplified approach, based on the measurement of power ratio parameters, for harmonic emissions assessment at the point of common coupling (PCC). The proposed approach comes from the common concept of power factor correction and the definitions of the IEEE Std. 1459-2010, where line utilization and harmonic pollution levels are evaluated by means of ratios between the power quantities of the apparent power decomposition. In addition to the IEEE Std. 1459–2010 indicators, in this article, the behavior is studied of additional parameters that are conceptually similar to those defined by the IEEE Std. 1459-2010. The suitability of such param…
