Data-Centric and Multimedia Components
2011
The content of XML documents is often primarily plain text, interspersed with various headers and perhaps some lists and tables. However, there are many applications for which the content of documents is not primarily narrative in nature, but instead includes (portions of) data records that are subject to storage and computational manipulation. The latter documents are sometimes referred to as data-centric or record-like, and they rely extensively on precise descriptions of the forms of data that can appear. In this chapter we first introduce the data type definition capabilities in XML Schema. We then consider the types of data very common in traditional databases: numeric data, dates, and…
Bodily dimensions of reading and writing practices on paper and digitally
2015
The bodily aspects of reading/writing practices are investigated in Finland. The paper is considered more adaptive to varied reading purposes than the screen.Handwriting is described as a more flexible and relaxed practice than typing.Skills determine less than materials and images the practices of reading/writing.Digital interfaces determine the ways we read and write less than suggested. This article investigates the different shapes in which reading and writing practices occur when paper/pen are compared with keyboard/screen. The focus is on the bodily aspects of these practices. Reading and writing are viewed as techniques of the body, which over the years have become increasingly mediat…
Dynamic graphics in Excel for teaching statistics: understanding the probability density function
2011
In this article, we show a dynamic graphic in Excel that is used to introduce an important concept in our subject, Statistics I: the probability density function. This interactive graphic seeks to facilitate conceptual understanding of the main aspects analysed by the learners.

A Survey of the Reliability Methods Approach in Some Codes for Structural Design
1992
Structural codes are documents which are subject to periodic revision and amendment. The main reason of this is due to developments from theoretical and experimental research. The rules and codes for the design of civil engineering structures which are prepared or which are under preparation by different regional and international organizations are under review. Similarities and differences in the approaches to the reliability — oriented concept of calculated safety verifications on the design stages prescribed in the codes (available to author) are presented in this paper.
Exploring the Effect of Teaching Methods on Students’ Learning of School Informatics
2015
School informatics is a relatively new subject in comparison to mathematics and science. As a result, there is much less research on the area of informatics didactics. Likewise, there is lack of theoretical grounding of the field and associated teaching methods and learning processes. The lack of research in the field of school informatics makes it difficult to identify which methods are effective to teach the subject. In addition, despite the emphasis on a set of well-defined topics, the informatics curriculum makes few suggestions as to which didactical skills teachers need to acquire in order to teach these topics. In fact, school informatics education is still in its infancy. It lacks t…

An Improved Skew Angle Detection and Correction Technique for Historical Scanned Documents Using Morphological Skeleton and Progressive Probabilistic…
2017
International audience; Skew detection is a crucial step for document analysis systems. Indeed, it represents one of the basic challenges, especially in case of historical documents analysis. In this paper, we propose a novel robust skew angle detection and correction technique. Morphological Skeleton is introduced to significantly reduce the amount of data to treat by removing the redundant pixels and keeping only the central curves of the image components. The proposed method then uses Progressive Probabilistic Hough Transform (PPHT) to identify image lines. A special procedure is finally applied in order to estimate the global skew angle of the document image from these detected lines. E…
OWL2: The Next Step for OWL
2008
Since achieving W3C recommendation status in 2004, the Web Ontology Language (OWL) has been successfully applied to many problems in computer science. Practical experience with OWL has been quite positive in general; however, it has also revealed room for improvement in several areas. We systematically analyze the identied short-comings of OWL, such as expressivity issues, problems with its syntaxes, and deficiencies in the definition of OWL species. Furthermore, we present an overview of OWL 2 -- an extension to and revision of OWL that is currently being developed within the W3C OWL Working Group. Many aspects of OWL have been thoroughly reengineered in OWL 2, thus producing a robust plat…
Research platform for medical device development to simplify translation to the market
2019
New regulations for medical products complicate research projects for new application fields and translation of innovative product ideas to refundable medical products becomes a high economic risk. All this demands for a CE-marked platform, which offers the possibility to access the recorded data online or even directly the hardware during research applications, to bridge the gap. This paper describes how a CE-marked medical product can be extended by different interfaces to enable basic research or simplify first proof-of-concept studies thus optimizing prototype development in research projects, simplifying the documentation process and reducing the risk for market access.
