Realization of Benefits from Best Value Approach by Proper Utilization of Expertise in Infrastructure Projects

2020

In the search for improved contract and project management in construction, the Best Value Approach (BVA) is a concept that has been introduced with a proven track record for better performance. The BV-philosophy stresses the importance of proper utilization of vendor expertise, as well as reducing management, direction and control by assumed non-expert clients. The development of BVA has mainly taken place through lessons learned from a number of projects, and existing research is mostly concerned with practicalities and “how” to apply it. However, research is scarce on what characterizes an expert in a BV-context, and the concept lacks scientific documentation regarding underlying premise…

COMPARISON OF THE COURSE SYLLABUS OF THE THEORY SUBJECT "CHEMISTRY" IN CHEMISTRY GRADE AND IN ENGINEERING STUDIES

2016

Comunicació presentada a INTED2016, 10th International Technology, Education and Development Conference. (March 7-9, 2016, Valencia, Spain). The aim of the chemistry-related subjects, taught in the first academic year of several grades at the University Jaume I, is to provide a broad overview about general chemistry. However, these defined subjects are adapted to the structure, objectives and curricula of each grade. In this paper, a comparison of the course syllabus of the Chemistry subjects taught in the "Chemistry grade" and in several "Engineering grades" (Agricultural, Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Technology and Chemical) is detailed. The differences and similarities of the subje…

Structure and performance assessment in traditional face-to-face and blended learning statistics courses

2014

Abstract In recent years the number of higher education institutions offering blended learning courses has increased notably. Blended learning is understood as the combination of traditional face-to-face teaching with online and distance learning. During the 2012- 13 academic year, for the first time, the Information and Documentation degree course at the University of Barcelona included a blended learning format in its course in statistics. The blended learning course combined biweekly face-to-face classes and online work between sessions. This study describes the organization of the blended course in comparison with the traditional face-to- face course and presents preliminary data on stu…

Control of structural problems in cultural heritage monuments using close-range photogrammetry and computer methods

2005

This paper deals with the conservation of monumental buildings. Several methods used for the architectonic documentation are analysed in this study. Computers methods and close-range photogrammetry are proposed as a preventive method which allows to detect, measure and track the temporal evolution of some structural problems detected, and also to assess the degree of conservation of the materials employed. A group of monuments belonging to the Spanish historical heritage is analysed. In order to carry out the analysis a wire-frame model and a photo-realistic textured model were made. Work focused later on the area where structural problems were more acute.

CATCOM: A Database on Performances of Spanish Classical Theater

2013

The research group DICAT (http://www.uv.es/dicat/index_en.html) has been working for almost twenty years on the creation of research instruments that will enhance scholars' knowledge of Early Modern Spanish theater through the use of digital tools that create new ways to combine and apply data.1 The database Diccionario biografico de actores del teatro clasico espanol (DICAT) (Ferrer Valls) was the result of work done during nearly fifteen years. The DICAT group created a database with almost five thousand entries, which document the activity of actors, actresses, heads of companies, and musicians who worked in Spanish professional theatrical companies during the sixteenth and seventeenth c…

General model for boring tool optimization

2016

Optimizing a tool (and therefore those for boring) consist in improving its performance through maximizing the objective functions chosen by the designer and/or by user. In order to define and to implement the proposed objective functions, contribute numerous features and performance required by tool users. Incorporation of new features makes the cutting tool to be competitive in the market and to meet user requirements.

The Development of Entrepreneurial Competences for Students of Mathematics and the Science Subjects: The Latvian Experience

2013

Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine the development of entrepreneurial competences among Latvian students in mathematics and in the science subjects, as well as to indicate how recent graduates have evaluated their knowledge and skill s in the various fields of endeavour at university. The research methodology implemented for this study is a mixed quantitative and qualitative approach. To assess the opportunities for development of entrepreneurial competences among students, a survey and analysis was undertaken of a broad range of educational and subject curricula, teaching/learning materials and of the academic performance results of graduates. The results of this study have r…

On the hazardous situations due to the presence of HV/MV substations in urban areas

2017

The paper focuses on the hazardous situations that can rise in urban areas in case of earth fault inside a High Voltage/Medium Voltage station. IEEE and IEC/EN Standards and technical documents are examined and discussed, in order to propose some practical guidelines for a safe integration of such installations in contexts characterized by the presence of low voltage systems and not trained persons.

Legal Liability of Professional Engineers: The Case of a Fire at a Shopping Center

2019

In this paper, the authors discuss the legal liabilities of the professional engineer as both the engineer of record of a project and the construction site manager. In particular, this paper analyzes the case of a fire at an end-user MV/LV substation of a shopping center in Italy, occurred a few years after maintenance works on the electrical installation. The professional engineer who had designed and overseen the construction of the substation was accused of criminal negligence. The authors through the examination of applicable technical standards, as well as of safety regulations, demonstrate that the professional engineer had acted diligently and that there was no ground for the neglige…

Integration of Subject Related ICT in Schools Is Failing; Could Revival of System Dynamics and Simulations Be an Example towards Improvement?

2010

A recent survey of teachers in 172 different Norwegian schools reveals that the integration of new technology into different subjects is far from the goals set by the Ministry. A total of around 1000 teachers responded to extensive questionnaires particularly developed for each one of 8 school subjects. The dominant uses in classrooms are related to standard software and Internet browsers. Very few teachers indicate that they apply software or technology going deeper into their subject teaching, promoting understanding and insight.
