Building 3D Geometric and Kinematic Models of Five-Axis Machine-Tools for Manufacturing Prosthetic Devices
2015
The paper presents the process of building and testing a geometric and kinematic model of a five-axis machining center, which can be used for accurate cutting processes simulation of complex parts. After building the model, it was be tested by simulating the machining process of a hip joint prosthetic device. The prosthetic device was chosen because of its complex shape and because it was obtained by a 3D scanning process, which means that the part was reconstructed using meshes, instead of surfaces, which makes the toolpath control more difficult.
As-built graphic documentation of the Monumento a la Tolerancia. Validation of low-cost survey techniques
2020
[EN] The Monumento a la Tolerancia is an emblematic sculpture realized by Eduardo Chillida, a perfect example for the documentation of sculptures with uniform textures, non-reflective colours and with poorly elaborated shapes through the implementation of various photogrammetric tools, as well as using different applications for processing phase. The basic data are photos taken quickly and without an accurate previous study, which is why the implementation of any target was not foreseen. In order to prove the results different kind of analysis were conducted. The first type was carried out analysing the results obtained from different software, with the use of the same instrument. The secon…
GPCALMA, a mammographic CAD in a GRID connection
2003
Purpose of this work is the development of an automatic system which could be useful for radiologists in the investigation of breast cancer. A breast neoplasia is often marked by the presence of microcalcifications and massive lesions in the mammogram: hence the need for tools able to recognize such lesions at an early stage. GPCALMA (Grid Platform Computer Assisted Library for MAmmography), a collaboration among italian physicists and radiologists, has built a large distributed database of digitized mammographic images (at this moment about 5500 images corresponding to 1650 patients). This collaboration has developed a CAD (Computer Aided Detection) system which, installed in an integrated…
BIM and Low-Cost Survey Techniques for Building Heritage Conservation
2017
The aim of this contribution is to illustrate a methodology for the protection and management of the building heritage, adding to the historical documentary investigations, a careful phase of survey and a conscious geometric and informational modelling of the pre-existence. The focus of this work was the Tower of Vietri sul Mare: a significant example of the architectural defense strategies adopted in Salerno in the 16th century. In fact, through the creation of digital models, it would be facilitated the management of the volumetric evolution that this tower has undergone over time, ensuring a greater accessibility and an easier understanding of the transformations it has suffered.
Gabor filters in industrial inspection: a review. Application to semiconductor industry
2005
This paper focuses on reviewing some recent works of the use of Gabor filters dealing with industrial applications. After a brief recall of Gabor filter basis, the two usual uses of Gabor filters are recalled: filter bank approach and filter design approach. The third part presents recent published works domain by domain. A fourth part exposes our own work with Gabor Filters for defect detection on semiconductor. A short conclusion summarizes the paper.
Smart cameras on a chip: using complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors to create smart vision chips
2020
Abstract: In this chapter, we introduce the fundamental concept of smart cameras on a chip or smart vision chips that simultaneously integrate the same die image capture capability and highly complex image processing. Successive technology scaling has made possible the integration of specific processing elements designed at chip level, at column level or at pixel level. To illustrate this continuous evolution, we survey three different categories of vision chips, exploring first the pioneering works on artificial retinas, then describing the most significant computational chips, and finally presenting the most recent image processing chips able to perform complex algorithms at a high frame …
Influence of the channel design on the heat and mass exchange of induction channel furnace
2011
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present in‐depth numerical modelling of heat and mass exchange in industrial induction channel furnace (ICF).Design/methodology/approachThe turbulent heat and mass exchange in the melt is calculated using a three‐dimensional (3D) electromagnetic model and a 3D transient large eddy simulation method. The simulation model has been verified by flow velocity and temperature measurements, which were carried out using an industrial sized channel inductor operating with Wood's metal as a low temperature model melt.FindingsThe ICF is well‐established for melting, holding and casting in the metallurgical industry. But there are still open questions regarding th…
A Numerical Approach to the Keel Design of a Sailing Yacht
2008
This paper describes an approach to the keel design of a sailing yacht. The related software, which is fully automatic, permits to obtain an optimal shape by modifying the surface used to define the keel planform. B-spline curves and surfaces have been used because of their ability in following complex shapes. The algorithm integrates ad hoc implemented original software with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) commercial ones. The optimisation procedure makes use of Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and a gradient – based optimiser for the refinement of the solution. A careful CAD and CFD modelling leads to a stable and efficient generalised method, which has been applied to the design of the centre…
Assessment of competences in designing online preparatory materials for the Cambridge First Certificate in English examination
2012
The implementation of the competence-based approach set out by the Bologna Declaration within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) entails important changes in learning processes and brings new approaches to content teaching and learning, inevitably affecting planning, methodology and assessment (Cano García, 2008). Such is the case of the design and development of the First Certificate in English Online Course & Tester at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV) by the CAMILLE research group. These materials, published through InGenio1, are split into two parts: a preparatory course and a tester platform. This article explores some of the key competences to be included in these p…
INTERNAL PRESSURE AND COUNTERPUNCH ACTION DESIGN IN Y-SHAPED TUBE HYDROFORMING PROCESSES: A MULTI OBJECTIVE OPTIMISATION APPROACH
2009
In sheet metal forming most of the problems are multi-objective problems, generally characterised by conflicting objectives. A classical approach to investigate such kind of problems is focused on a combination of multiple objectives into a unique objective function to be optimised. Actually, in metal forming processes optimisation two main phases have to be developed in order to reach an optimal solution: the former is the modelling phase (definition of the design variables and objective function) and the latter concerns the computational aspect (numerical simulations or experiment to be developed). In this paper, an integration between numerical simulations, response surface methodology a…
