The upgraded HADES trigger and data acquisition system
2011
The HADES experiment is a High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer located at GSI in Darmstadt, Germany. Recently, its trigger and data acquisition system was upgraded. The main goal was to substantially increase the event rate capability by a factor of up to 20 to reach 100 kHz in light and 20 kHz in heavy ion reaction systems. The total data rate written to storage is about 400 MByte/s in peak.In this context, the complete read-out system was exchanged to FPGA-based platforms using optical communication. For data transport a general-purpose real-time network protocol was developed to meet the strong requirements of the system. In particular, trigger information has to reach all front-end …
SmartARP: merging IP and MAC addressing for low-cost gigabit Ethernet networks
1999
Abstract Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) is one of the key TCP/IP stack protocols, used on LANs to map 32 bit IP addresses into 48 bit hardware addresses. Regular ARP uses MAC layer broadcasts to perform the mapping. In this paper a new server-based ARP extension (smartARP) is proposed, which allows the extension of ARP functionality beyond a single MAC layer broadcast domain. Compared to regular IP router, smartARP together with simple broadcast-filtering switches presents a low-cost alternative for forwarding packets between MAC layer broadcast domains. SmartARP is transparent to existing IP hosts, operates independent of LAN speed, and scales for big networks.
Travestirsi per Dioniso
2020
Starting from the definition of “performativity” and “gender parody” developed by Judith Butler, this paper aims to investigate the performative functions of male cross-dressing within the dynamics of social categorization in classical Athens. For this purpose I have adopted an eclectic hermeneutic toolbox, borrowing elements from Harvey Sacks’ Membership Categorization Analysis to René Girard’s scapegoat theory. Through the philological analysis of some literary representations of transvestism, such as Pentheus’ cross-dressing in Euripides’ "Bacchae", and the anthropological interpretation of the mythical-ritual complex relating to the effeminacy of Dionysus, my work focuses on the polyval…
A low-cost embedded IDS to monitor and prevent Man-in-the-Middle attacks on wired LAN environments
2007
A man-in-the-middle (MitM) attack is, in the scope of a LAN, a technique where an attacker is able to redirect all traffic between two hosts of that same LAN for packet sniffing or data manipulation, without the end hosts being aware of it. Usually these attacks exploit security flaws in the implementation of the ARP protocol at hosts. Up to now, detecting such attacks required setting up a machine with special-purpose software for this task. As an additional problem, few intrusion detection systems (IDS) are able to prevent MitM attacks. In this work we present a low-cost embedded IDS which, when plugged into a switch or hub, is able to detect and/or prevent MitM attacks automatically and …

Emission of real phonons due to electron's self-dressing in a covalent crystal
2011
A slow monoelectronic excitation in a covalent crystal at the temperature T=0 is analyzed. The interaction with zero-point longitudinal acoustic phonons leads to the formation of a dressed electronic state at an energy level lower than that of the initial bare state. This aspect of the dressing process is described here by hypothesizing that the excess of energy is released with the emission of real phonons. Specifically, this paper considers the transition probability from the bare monoelectronic state to a dressed state of the electron accompanied by real phonons and a deformation field. The spectrum of the real phonons emitted during the electronic self-dressing is calculated by applying…
