Real-time ultrasound in Crohn's disease: characteristic features and clinical implications.
1986
Thirty-two children with Crohn's disease were evaluated by real-time ultrasonography. The typical pattern of Crohn's disease caused by bowel wall thickening is the “bull's eye phenomenon”, the elongated tubular stiff bowel loop with narrowing of the lumen and the small bowel conglomerate tumor. In indefinable abdominal complaints sonography may lead to the correct diagnosis. The differential diagnosis of similar sonographic features and the limitations of ultrasound in gastrointestinal disease must be considered. In proven Crohn's disease the findings in follow-up match the clinical course and may delineate complications, such as ileus, abscess, hydronephrosis, gallstones or involvement of …
Rats with congenital hydronephrosis show increased susceptibility to renal ischemia‐reperfusion injury
2020
Abstract Many drug candidates have shown significant renoprotective effects in preclinical models; however, there is no clinically used effective pharmacotherapy for acute kidney injury. The failure to translate from bench to bedside could be due to misleading results from experimental animals with undetected congenital kidney defects. This study was performed to assess the effects of congenital hydronephrosis on the functional capacity of tubular renal transporters as well as kidney sensitivity to ischemia‐reperfusion (I‐R)‐induced injury in male Wistar rats. Ultrasonography was used to distinguish healthy control rats from rats with hydronephrosis. L‐carnitine or furosemide was administer…
Complications of trans-anastomotic externalised stents in open pyeloplasty: influence of the method of placement, the duration of stenting, and the a…
2010
To assess the influence of the method for stent placement, the duration of stenting, and the presence of bladder drainage on the complication rate of open pyeloplasty. Patients and methods: Complications were, retrospectively, compared in 228 consecutive open pyeloplasties performed at institution A using a trans-pyelostomic 6-Fr splint/stent for 5 days and no bladder drainage, and 150 consecutive open pyeloplasties performed at institution B using a trans-nephrostomic 6-Fr splint/stent for 9 days plus bladder drainage. Results: Median age at surgery was comparable between groups. The overall complication rate was 13% and was comparable at the two institutions, but for the presence of perio…
Erythropoietin Accelerates the Regeneration of Ureteral Function in a Murine Model of Obstructive Uropathy
2015
Unilateral ureteral obstruction halts ureteral peristalsis, and may cause pain and lead to infection. Ureteral ability to recover after obstruction removal remains unclear. Erythropoietin has protective effects in nonhematopoietic organs and restores peristalsis in hypocontractile intestinal smooth muscle cells. We investigated the role of erythropoietin in ureteral smooth muscle function and its therapeutic value for unilateral ureteral obstruction.Unilateral ureteral obstruction was created for 24, 48 and 72 hours in 22 mice per group using a nontraumatic microclip via laparotomy. We determined erythropoietin, erythropoietin receptor and β-common receptor expression in obstructed and unob…
Drone images versus terrain images in advertisements: Images’ verticality effects and the mediating role of mental simulation on attitude towards the…
2018
Over the past decade, new techniques have been developed to entice and persuade advertisement viewers. One technique, which has grown in popularity, is the use of drones to capture images within an...
Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis--a rapidly progressive disabling disease with limited therapeutic options.
2009
Background Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) affects some patients on dialysis after gadolinium contrast agent–enhanced magnetic resonance imaging. It is characterized by progressive skin fibrosis of the extremities, sometimes including the trunk and internal organs. Methods The clinical course of 10 patients with biopsy-proven NSF was analyzed retrospectively with regard to gadolinium exposition, disease onset, and progression of NSF with special emphasis on physical mobility and impact of different therapeutic approaches. Results Despite physiotherapy and different additional therapeutic approaches (eg, immunosuppression, ultraviolet A-1 phototherapy, or extracorporal photopheresis) all…
Probing neutrino oscillations in supersymmetric models at the Large Hadron Collider
2010
The lightest supersymmetric particle may decay with branching ratios that correlate with neutrino oscillation parameters. In this case the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has the potential to probe the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle with sensitivity competitive to its low-energy determination by underground experiments. Under realistic detection assumptions, we identify the necessary conditions for the experiments at CERN's LHC to probe the simplest scenario for neutrino masses induced by minimal supergravity with bilinear R parity violation.
A Web Application for the Remote Control of Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
2019
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are receiving an increasing attention from the research and industry community, and today they are adopted for several civilian and military applications. However, state of the art technologies are still based on a single UAV either directly controlled by the human operator or supervised through the manual definition of a flight plan. As a result, scalability is still a significant limitation for such systems, especially when large areas need to be monitored. In this paper we propose a web based application for the control of multiple UAVs. The application has three layers. The first layer allows the user to remotely submit a monitoring mission through a web …
Collider aspects of flavour physics at high Q
2008
This chapter of the 'Flavor in the era of LHC' workshop report discusses flavor-related issues in the production and decays of heavy states at the LHC at high momentum transfer Q, both from the experimental and the theoretical perspective. We review top quark physics, and discuss the flavor aspects of several extensions of the standard model, such as supersymmetry, little Higgs models or models with extra dimensions. This includes discovery aspects, as well as the measurement of several properties of these heavy states. We also present publicly available computational tools related to this topic. © Springer-Verlag / Società Italiana di Fisica 2008.
