Low density lipoproteins and human serum albumin as the carriers of squalenoylated drugs: insights from molecular simulations

We have studied the interaction of three clinically promising squalenoylated drugs (gemcitabine-squalene, adenine-squalene, and doxorubicin-squalene) with low-density lipoproteins (LDL) by means of atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. It is shown that all studied squalenoylated drugs accumulate inside the LDL particles. This effect is promoted by the squalene moiety, which acts as an anchor and drives the hydrophilic drugs into the hydrophobic core of the LDL lipid droplet. Our data suggest that LDL particles could be a universal carriers of squalenoylated drugs in the bloodstream. Utilisation of pectin coating to enhance spray-dry stability of pea protein-stabilised oil-in-water emulsions

International audience; In this study, development of pea (Pisum sativum) protein stabilised dry and reconstituted emulsions is presented. Dry emulsions were prepared by spray-drying liquid emulsions in a laboratory spray-dryer. The effect of drying on the physical stability of oil-in-water emulsions containing pea protein-coated and pea protein/pectin-coated oil droplets has been studied. Droplets pinned at chemically inhomogenous substrates: A simulation study of the two-dimensional Ising case

As a simplified model of a liquid nanostripe adsorbed on a chemically structured substrate surface, a two-dimensional Ising system with two boundaries at which surface fields act is studied. The Elovl5 enzyme in breast cancer : regulation of cancer cell proliferation and metastasis

Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in women. The 5-year relative survival rate is less than 30% for metastatic breast cancer and metastases account for more than 75% of breast cancer deaths. Fatty acid metabolism is altered in cancer and contributes to tumor progression and metastasis. Tuneable multicoloured patterns from photonic cross-communication between cholesteric liquid crystal droplets

Monodisperse droplets of planar-aligned cholesteric (N*) liquid crystal exhibit an intriguing capacity for photonic cross-communication, giving rise to colourful patterns that depend sensitively on the N* pitch, droplet positions and illuminated area. The phenomenon results from a combination of omnidirectional selective reflection of N* droplets—which thus act as spherically symmetric self-assembled photonic crystals—and total internal reflection at the continuous phase surface. We outline how the unique optical properties can be employed in numerous applications.

Acid Catalysis with Alkane/Water Microdroplets in Ionic Liquids

Ionic liquids are composed of an organic cation and a highly delocalized perfluorinated anion, which remain tight to each other and neutral across the extended liquid framework. Here we show that n-alkanes in millimolar amounts enable a sufficient ion charge separation to release the innate acidity of the ionic liquid and catalyze the industrially relevant alkylation of phenol, after generating homogeneous, self-stabilized, and surfactant-free microdroplets (1–5 μm). Vaporization and autoignition characteristics of ethanol and 1-propanol droplets : influence of water

Detailed investigation of the vaporization of an isolated of ethanol and 1-propanol droplet was carried out in this experimental study. The experimental set-up consists of a heated chamber with a cross quartz fibers configuration as droplet support. An alcohol droplet is located at the intersection of the cross quartz fibre with a controlled initial diameter (300-600µm). Ambient temperature is varied from 298 to 973K at atmospheric pressure. Combined treatment with trypsin, cholesterol esterase, and neuraminidase transforms LDL, but not HDL or VLDL, to particles with properties akin to those of lipid extracted from atherosclerotic lesions. Towards bioarrays of cellular-like compartments for monitoring few molecular binding events

The aim of this work is to artificially reproduce scalable cellular-like compartments on a chip, thus realizing specialized small volume systems to study the behaviour of interacting biomolecules by few binding events. Flavor release from salad dressings: sensory and physicochemical approaches in relation with the structure

The effect of process and formulation on sensory perception and flavor release was investigated on salad dressing models. Oil/vinegar emulsions (φ = 0.5, droplet size > 10 μm) with thickeners and a whey protein concentrate were prepared with different fat droplet sizes and different distributions of fat droplet size. The effect of the amount of emulsifier was also tested. Sensory profile analysis was performed by a trained panel and flavor release quantified by dynamic headspace analysis.
