Exploring the role of knowledge management practices on exports: A dynamic capabilities view

2014

Abstract Drawing on dynamic capabilities view, this work provides empirical evidence on the role of knowledge management practices on export intensity in SMEs in a mature and global, non-high-tech industry. A quantitative study with structural equation modeling was carried out on a sample of 157 Spanish and Italian manufacturing companies in the ceramic tile industry. Our results suggest the existence of a mediating effect of dynamic capabilities on exports, hence the implementation of knowledge management practices is a necessary but not sufficient condition to improve exporting, requiring the existence of dynamic capabilities to reconfigure these capabilities. Findings highlight the relev…

Innovation, knowledge, judgment, and decision-making as virtuous cycles

2018

Abstract The management of information technologies facilitates knowledge creation. In the most competitive, complex, and turbulent environments, knowledge is the most important resource for firms and countries to develop. In such environments, organizations must use their knowledge to improve their competitive position. With the support of the Journal of Business Research, the 2017 Global Innovation and Knowledge Academy (GIKA) Conference is proud to announce a special issue on “Innovation, knowledge, judgment, and decision-making as virtuous cycles.” This special issue comprises outstanding contributions selected from papers that were presented at the 2017 GIKA Conference, held at ISEG Li…

Social Franchising : A Bibliometric and Theoretic Review

2019

Author's accepted manuscript. This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Journal of Promotion Management on 07/03/2019, available online: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/10496491.2019.1584777. We present a comprehensive review of social franchising literature and an integrated framework highlighting factors and theories driving the concept. Bibliometric and content analysis are used to analyze 111 articles between 2002 and 2018 from ISI Web of Science and Scopus. The following three research streams are identified: motivations for social franchising, how social franchising work, and impact of social franchising. These are integrated into a conceptual fr…

Managerial competencies, innovation and engagement in SMEs: The mediating role of organisational learning

2017

Abstract According to job demands-resources theory, resources promote positive attitudes, which results in several positive behaviors at work. However, there is little research that examines the effect of managerial competencies on positive attitudes at work. Our research proposes a scale of 7 managerial competencies that evidence to be connected with a particularly relevant attitude at work, namely, engagement. We find that the proposed managerial competencies scale overcomes the required psychometric properties, on the basis of a sample of 204 managers of Spanish SMEs. Following job demands-resources theory, our study confirms a direct and positive effect of the 7 managerial competencies …

Individualizing gamified systems: The role of trait competitiveness and leaderboard design

2020

Abstract The success of gamified systems depends on how user characteristics and behavior interact with system design. Prior research, however, has largely neglected this user-system interaction, thus limiting our understanding of gamification design. To addresses this limitation in the current literature, we investigate how users' trait competitiveness is related to the usage intention of a competitive gamified system. Based on our theoretical model, we hypothesize and test both direct and indirect effects (through perceived enjoyment), as well as whether and how system design moderates the effects of trait competitiveness. Results from structural equation modeling demonstrate an indirect-…

The role of emotions and conflicting online reviews on consumers' purchase intentions

2018

Abstract Drawing on dual-process theories, this paper explains how the systematic and heuristic information processing of online reviews with conflicting information can influence consumers' purchase decision making. The study adopts major assumptions of complexity and configuration theory in employing fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis on 680 TripAdvisor users to test the complex interrelationships between emotions and the systematic and heuristic cues used in processing reviews. The results show that the systematic and heuristic processing of online reviews can produce independent impacts on consumer decision making. Both processing routes can interact with each other to affect th…

Small and medium enterprises web page design: a qualitative study

2012

The present paper is based on the results of seven consumer focus groups developed in Spain. The results are interpreted using an ethnographic summary of each focus group (qualitative approach) and a systematic coding procedure (quantitative approach). The research pursued two major objectives. Firstly, to identify the key design variables for building a successful transactional small and medium enterprises (SME) website. Secondly, the transactional relevance of each key design variable was tested in order to establish priorities according to Spanish online buyers’ preferences. The findings indicate that a SME transactional website should have three main strong points: 1 it must be secure 2…

Knowledge-Intensive Business Service as innovation agent through client interaction and labour mobility

2008

Theoretical propositions often maintain that the Knowledge-Intensive Business Service (KIBS) sector is important in stimulating innovation activity in other industries. Empirical results from quantitative innovation surveys on the other hand generally regard KIBS as less important innovation partners for other firms. Such results may rely on the fact that quantitative surveys do not seize all the roles KIBS firms have as knowledge sources. The paper thus demonstrates that many workers left the KIBS sector in Norway to start working in other sectors during parts of the 1990s, signifying a flow of knowledge following the workers out of the KIBS sector.

Augmenting versus exploiting entry modes in soft services

2014

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to address foreign market entry mode as a way to enhance firm’s knowledge base, providing new insights into traditional explanations of entry mode choice for soft services. The authors offer an alternative knowledge-based approach to assess foreign investment decisions by considering the role of resource-augmenting (direct investment) and resource-exploiting strategies (licenses). In addition, the authors untie the type of experiential knowledge, i.e., host country and mode experience, to analyze its interactions with environmental uncertainties such as cultural distance. Design/methodology/approach – Based on a customized database of the Spanish Glob…
