Structural Knowledge Extraction and Representation in Sensory Data

During the last decades the availability of increasingly cheaper technology for pervasive monitoring has boosted the creation of systems able to automatically comprehend the events occurring in the monitored area, in order to plan a set of actions to bring the environment closer to the user's preferences. These systems must inevitably process a great amount of raw data - sensor measurements - and need to summarize them in a high-level representation to accomplish their tasks. An implicit requirement is the need to learn from experience, in order to be able to capture the hidden structure of the data, in terms of relations between its key components. The availability of large collections of …

A Multimodal Interaction Guide for Pervasive Services Access

2007

A pervasive, multimodal virtual guide for a cultural heritage site tour is illustrated. The guide is based on the integration of different technologies such as conversational agents, commonsense reasoning knowledge bases, multimodal interfaces and self-location detection systems. The aim of the work is to offer a more natural, context sensitive access to information with respect to traditional audio/visual pre-recorded guides. A prototype has been developed and implemented on a Qtek 9090 with Windows Mobile 2003 in order to deal with the "Museo Archeologico Regionale di Agrigento" domain.

The ALSWEB Framework: A Web-based Framework for the Linguistic Atlas of Sicily Project

2011

In this work the ALSWEB framework is presented. The ALSWEB is a virtual linguistic laboratory for linguistic research developed as a web application. The purpose of the framework is to model the entire process regarding the different steps of data acquisition, data transformation, information acquisition from different data and research hypotheses verification in the ALS (Linguistic Atlas of Sicily) project. The nature of the ALS research involves different type of data. The socio-linguistic researcher that is the main actor of the proposed framework has to acquire information in many formats: multimedia data, audio data, question-answer (textual) from particular questionnaires. In this wor…

An Approach to Enhance Chatbot Semantic Power and Maintainability: Experiences within the FRASI Project

2012

The paper illustrates the implementation and semantic enhancement of a domain-oriented Question-Answering system based on a pattern-matching chat bot technology, developed within an industrial project, named FRASI. The main difficulty in building a KB for a chat bot is to handwrite all possible question-answer pairs that constitute the KB. The proposed approach simplifies the chat bot realization thanks to two solutions. The first one uses an ontology, which is exploited in a twofold manner: to construct dynamic answers as a result of an inference process about the domain, and to automatically populate, off-line, the chat bot KB with sentences that can be derived from the ontology, describi…

Acquisition of New Knowledge to Manage Conversation in TutorJ

2009

This paper presents new conversation modules developed for TutorJ to support the use of meta-cognitive strategies in the learners. TutorJ is an Intelligent Tutoring System able to interact with users to assess their skills, and improve their knowledge in a specific domain. New models are devoted to plan the conversation and to acquire new knowledge from semi-structured data sources. Conversation planning is based on probabilistic techniques. Knowledge acquisition is based on retrieval, transformation and alignment of data from wikis to enrich the replies to students questions.

Publicidad y Rule of Law

2011

By the ‘Rule of Law’ I mean a set of formal and institutional features the law may possess in varying degrees. These features define an ideal, which laws have traditionally been expected to live up to. One of these features is publicity. Part of what constitutes the Rule of Law is the requirement that the laws should be public. This is the subject of this paper. When it is claimed that the Rule of Law requires that the laws should be public, what is to be understood by this claim? My main claim is that the Rule of Law requirement of publicity is best understood in terms of the notion of common, or mutual, knowledge. When it is required that the laws should be public, what should be meant by…

Il diritto e il suo doppio: in cerca della frontiera tra la conoscenza giuridica e il suo oggetto

2017

. Some legal scholars draw a clear line between law and legal knowledge. Following Norberto Bobbio, we can call them “law’s guardians”. Conversely, others – Bobbio calls them “law’s creators” – almost neglect the relevance of the border which separates law and legal knowledge. The distinction between “guardians” and “creators” captures something relevant about jurists’ style in different historical periods and contexts. Nevertheless, it would be a clear mistake to treat this distinction as a conceptual or a substantive one. Even the “guardians model” of legal knowledge is grounded on ideological assumptions; as a consequence, the scholars which refer themselves to this model cannot avoid to…

Some arguments supporting an interpretative approach to legal knowledge

2014
