A Network Tomography Approach for Traffic Monitoring in Smart Cities

Traffic monitoring is a key enabler for several planning and management activities of a Smart City. However, traditional techniques are often not cost efficient, flexible, and scalable. This paper proposes an approach to traffic monitoring that does not rely on probe vehicles, nor requires vehicle localization through GPS. Conversely, it exploits just a limited number of cameras placed at road intersections to measure car end-to-end traveling times. Sensor9k : A testbed for designing and experimenting with WSN-based ambient intelligence applications

Ambient Intelligence systems are typically characterized by the use of pervasive equipment for monitoring and modifying the environment according to users' needs, and to globally defined constraints. Our work describes the implementation of a testbed providing the hardware and software tools for the development and management of AmI applications based on wireless sensor and actuator networks, whose main goal is energy saving for global sustainability. A sample application is presented that addresses temperature control in a work environment, through a multi-objective fuzzy controller taking into account users' preferences and energy consumption.

In recent years, the widespread diffusion of pervasive sensing devices and the increasing need for reducing energy consumption have encouraged research in the energy-aware management of smart environments. Following this direction, this paper proposes a hybrid intelligent system which exploits a fog-based architecture to achieve energy efficiency in smart buildings. Our proposal combines reactive intelligence, for quick adaptation to the ever-changing environment, and deliberative intelligence, for performing complex learning and optimization. Traditional video scene analysis depends on accurate background modeling to identify salient foreground objects. However, in many important surveillance applications, saliency is defined by the appearance of a new non-ephemeral object that is between the foreground and background. Settore SECS-P/07 - Economia AziendaleQuality in delivering public services has been recognised as a major issue challenging performance in the public sector as well as the ability to operate effectively and within budget constraints. Empirical findings shown by the literature demonstrate that concrete efforts have been produced towards the evaluation and improvement of satisfaction levels of citizens and other Public Administration’s ‘customers’. However still today this issue portrays many unresolved criticalities particularly concerning the methodological approaches and operative tools to adopt in order to integrate ‘customer satisfaction’ programs with the wider organisational control system in each public administration. This paper adopts a non-conventional view of the ‘customer satisfaction’ concept. This is currently meant as a matter of social reporting or even statistical analysis based on the users’ perceptions on the level of provided services by a given (front office) unit in the public sector. Here an inter-institutional perspective is adopted with a view to map the overall value chain leading to the final product delivered to citizens or the community. Inside this chain tracking the underlying administrative products delivered by back-office units to their ‘internal clients’ in the public administration is recommended as a fundamental step to understand how to improve performance in satisfying citizens’ needs. This should also require a proper link between the administrative units’ goals and performance measures to the desired efficiency and effectiveness of processes leading to the attainment of administrative products providing the basis of the final services delivered to the private sector. Based on first empirical findings from field analysis in the Italian context the paper aims to outline an approach which could assist both politicians and managers to better assess and improve performance according to a customer satisfaction perspective.

This paper investigates the energy efficiency (EE) optimization in downlink multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). In our research, the statistical channel state information (CSI) is exploited to reduce the signaling overhead. Low-cost high-haze films based on ZnO nanorods for light scattering in thin c-Si solar cells

Light scattering from ZnO nanorods (NR) is investigated, modeled, and applied to a solar cell. ZnO NR (120-1300 nm long, 280-60 nm large), grown by low-cost chemical bath deposition at 90 degrees C, exhibit diffused-to-total transmitted light as high as 70% and 30% in the 400 and 1000 nm wavelength range, respectively. Data and scattering simulation show that ZnO NR length plays a crucial role in light diffusion effect. A transparent ZnO NR film grown on glass and placed on top of a 1 mu m thick c-Si solar cell is shown to enhance the light-current conversion efficiency for wavelengths longer than 600 nm.
