Eye diseases are the second most prevalent pathologies after the age of 65 years. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in western countries. The number of people suffering from ocular pathologies is expected to increase sharply in the near future, becoming a socio-economic burden. Recent data indicate that lipid nutrients may represent new tools in the prevention of eye diseases, and especially AMD.

The progressive aging process of Polish society is becoming an increasing challenge for central, regional and local authorities. The increase in the number of elderly people influences the growing demand for health and care services.
