CF3 Substitution of [Cu(P^P)(bpy)][PF6 ] Complexes: Effects on Photophysical Properties and Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cell Performance

2018

Herein, [Cu(P^P)(N^N)][PF6 ] complexes (P^P=bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether (POP) or 4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene (xantphos); N^N=CF3 -substituted 2,2'-bipyridines (6,6'-(CF3 )2 bpy, 6-CF3 bpy, 5,5'-(CF3 )2 bpy, 4,4'-(CF3 )2 bpy, 6,6'-Me2 -4,4'-(CF3 )2 bpy)) are reported. The effects of CF3 substitution on their structure as well as their electrochemical and photophysical properties are also presented. The HOMO-LUMO gap was tuned by the N^N ligand; the largest redshift in the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) band was for [Cu(P^P){5,5'-(CF3 )2 bpy}][PF6 ]. In solution, the compounds are weak yellow to red emitters. The emission properties depend on the substitu…

Stable and Efficient Solid-State Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells Based on a Series of Hydrophobic Iridium Complexes

2011

Light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) based on ionic transition-metal complexes (iTMCs) exhibiting high efficiency, short turn-on time, and long stability have recently been presented. Furthermore, LECs emitting in the full range of the visible spectrum including white light have been reported. However, all these achievements were obtained individually, not simultaneously, using in each case a different iTMC. In this work, device stability is maintained by employing intrinsically stable ionic iridium complexes, while increasing the complex and the device quantum yields for exciton-to-photon conversion. This is done by sequentially modifying the archetype ionic iridium complex [Ir(ppy)…

Enhanced operational stability through interfacial modification by active encapsulation of perovskite solar cells

2020

Encapsulates are, in general, the passive components of any photovoltaic device that provides the required shielding from the externally stimulated degradation. Here we provide comprehensive physical insight depicting a rather non-trivial active nature, in contrast to the supposedly passive, atomic layer deposition (ALD) grown Al2O3 encapsulate layer on the hybrid perovskite [(FA0.83MA0.17)0.95Cs0.05PbI2.5Br0.5] photovoltaic device having the configuration: glass/FTO/SnO2/perovskite/spiro-OMeTAD/Au/(±) Al2O3. By combining various electrical characterization techniques, our experimental observations indicate that the ALD chemistry produces considerable enhancement of the electronic conductiv…

Organic Polyradicals as Redox Mediators: Effect of Intramolecular Radical Interactions on Their Efficiency

2020

The spin–spin interactions between unpaired electrons in organic (poly)radicals, especially nitroxides, are largely investigated and are of crucial importance for their applications in areas such as organic magnetism, molecular charge transfer, or multiple spin labeling in structural biology. Recently, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyloxyl and polymers functionalized with nitroxides have been described as successful redox mediators in several electrochemical applications; however, the study of spin–spin interaction effect in such an area is absent. This communication reports the preparation of a novel family of discrete polynitroxide molecules, with the same number of radical units but differe…

Growth and Characterization of Anodic Films on Scandium

2013

The anodic behavior of Sc in a slightly alkaline aqueous solution is studied. Electrochemical and capacitance measurements suggest that passive films can be formed on the scandium surface under a high electric field. The formation of these layers occurs at low faradaic efficiency due to oxygen evolution. Photoelectrochemical experiments suggest the formation of a barrier layer with a thickness high enough to hinder external electron photoemission processes and allow the estimation of the bandgap of the films as a function of their formation voltage. The estimated bandgap values were lower than that reported for Sc2O3, suggesting the formation of hydrated phases and/or of a strongly oxygen d…

Growth and Characterization of Ordered PbO[sub 2] Nanowire Arrays

2008

Large arrays of PbO 2 nanowires having high aspect ratios (length-to-width ratio) were grown by potentiostatic electrodeposition into anodic alumina templates under anodic polarization. Different electrolytic solutions were used in order to obtain nanowires of pure α-PbO 2 , pure β-PbO 2 , and a a + β mixture, We have found that, in a lead nitrate bath, a crystallographic structure of nanowires depends on pH; this latter was varied adding diluted nitric acid to the electrolyte. Nanowires of pure β-PbO 2 were obtained at pH 0.6, while mixed α-PbO 2 + β-PbΟ 2 nanowires were grown at pH 2. Pure α-phase was obtained in a bath containing lead acetate at pH 6.6. In all deposition conditions, nano…

Low Current Density Driving Leads to Efficient, Bright and Stable Green Electroluminescence

2013

Electroluminescent devices have the potential to reshape lighting and display technologies by providing low-energy consuming solutions with great aesthetic features, such as flexibility and transparency. In particular, light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) are among the simplest electro-luminescent devices. The device operates with air-stable materials and the active layer can be resumed to an ionic phosphorescent emitter. As a consequence, LECs can be assembled using solution-process technologies, which could allow for low-cost and large-area lighting applications in the future. High efficiencies have been reported at rather low luminances (<50 cd m(-2)) and at very low current densi…

Manipulation of charge transfer and transport in plasmonic-ferroelectric hybrids for photoelectrochemical applications

2016

Utilizing plasmonic nanostructures for efficient and flexible conversion of solar energy into electricity or fuel presents a new paradigm in photovoltaics and photoelectrochemistry research. In a conventional photoelectrochemical cell, consisting of a plasmonic structure in contact with a semiconductor, the type of photoelectrochemical reaction is determined by the band bending at the semiconductor/electrolyte interface. The nature of the reaction is thus hard to tune. Here instead of using a semiconductor, we employed a ferroelectric material, Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT). By depositing gold nanoparticle arrays and PZT films on ITO substrates, and studying the photocurrent as well as the femtosecond …

The Effect of Nb Incorporation on the Electronic Properties of Anodic HfO2

2017

Hafnium oxide and Nb doped HfO2 were grown by anodizing sputtering-deposited Hf and Hf-4at.%Nb. Photoelectrochemical characterization was carried out in order to estimate solid state properties such as band gap, flat band potential and electrons internal photoemission threshold energy as a function of thickness and composition of anodic oxides. Optical transitions at energy lower than the band gap value of the investigated anodic films were evidenced, and they are attributed to optical transitions involving localized states inside the band gap. Such states were located at 3.6 eV and 3.9 eV below the conduction band edge for the Nb free and Nb containing hafnium oxide, respectively. Impedanc…
