Photonic effect study on polystyrene 3D-photonic crystals at near-field range: dependence on the wavelength and on the lattice parameter

2007

3D-photonic crystals (opals) based on polystyrene (PS) colloidal nanospheres are being characterized by scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM). These crystals offer a huge potential for controlling both the spontaneous emission of embedded light sources and the propagation of light itself.

Plasmonic-photonic hybrid cavity for tailored light-matter coupling

2010

We propose and demonstrate a hybrid cavity system in which metal nanoparticles are evanescently coupled to a dielectric photonic crystal cavity using a nanoassembly method. While the metal constituents lead to strongly localized fields, optical feedback is provided by the surrounding photonic crystal structure. The combined effect of plasmonic field enhancement and high quality factor (Q ≈ 900) opens new routes for the control of light-matter interaction at the nanoscale.

DC and 1/f noise characterization of cryogenically cooled pseudomorphic HEMT's

2002

Pseudomorphic (AlGaAs/InGaAs/GaAs) HEMT's have exhibited the best noise performance over the entire LF-to-microwave frequency range if compared to MESFET's and conventional GaAs HEMT's, due to either a reduced flicker noise, a lower G/R contribution and a smaller high-field diffusion noise. We have recently investigated the microwave (up to 18 GHz) noise properties of packaged pseudomorphic HEMT's from 290 K down to cryogenic temperature values. The current experimental work is aimed at extending such analysis to the LF noise range and at low temperatures. Cryogenic noise spectra (1 Hz to 100 KHz) and DC characteristics have therefore been recorded and the relevant observations on the devic…

Lattice-Matched GaN–InAlN Waveguides at $\lambda=1.55\ \mu$m Grown by Metal–Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy

2008

We report on the demonstration of low-loss, single-mode GaN-InAlN ridge waveguides (WGs) at fiber-optics telecommunication wavelengths. The structure grown by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy contains AlInN cladding layers lattice-matched to GaN. For slab-like WGs propagation losses are below 3 dB/mm and independent of light polarization. For 2.6-mum-wide WGs the propagation losses in the 1.5- to 1.58-mum spectral region are as low as 1.8 and 4.9 dB/mm for transverse-electric- and transverse-magnetic-polarization, respectively. The losses are attributed to the sidewall roughness and can be further reduced by the optimization of the etching process.

Efficient unidirectional polarization-controlled excitation of surface plasmon polaritons

2014

Efficient excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) remains one of the most challenging issues in areas of plasmonics related to information communication technologies. In particular, combining high SPP excitation efficiency and acceptance of any polarization of incident light appeared to be impossible to attain due to the polarized nature of SPPs. Here we demonstrate plasmonic couplers that represent arrays of gap SPP resonators producing upon reflection two orthogonal phase gradients in respective linear polarizations of incident radiation. These couplers are thereby capable of efficiently converting incident radiation with arbitrary polarization into SPPs that propagate in orthogon…
