Bilayer biodegradable films prepared by co-extrusion film blowing: Mechanical performance, release kinetics of an antimicrobial agent and hydrolytic …

2020

Abstract Bilayer biodegradable, eco-friendly films were prepared by co-extrusion film blowing, coupling polylactic acid (PLA) and Bio-flex ® (BIO). Furthermore, in the PLA layer, carvacrol (CRV) was added as a natural antimicrobial additive, whereas a nanoclay (D72T) was integrated to protect CRV from volatilization and to modulate release. The materials were analyzed by morphological, chemical-physical, mechanical testing. Furthermore, CRV release and degradation tests were performed. The results pointed out that coupling the two matrices allows gathering the stiffness of PLA with the ductility of BIO. Furthermore, the interlayer adhesion is promoted by CRV. D72T exerts a key-role in avoid…

A DC and small signal AC model for organic thin film transistors including contact effects and non quasi static regime

2017

Abstract We present a compact model for the DC and small signal AC analysis of Organic Thin Film Transistors (OTFTs). The DC part of the model assumes that the electrical current injected in the OTFT is limited by the presence of a metal/organic semiconductor junction that, at source, acts as a reverse biased Schottky junction. By including this junction, modeled as a reverse biased gated diode at source, the DC model is able to reproduce the scaling of the electrical characteristics even for short channel devices. The small signal AC part of the model uses a transmission line approach in order to compute the impedances of the channel and parasitic regions of the device. The overlap capacit…

A liquid alkoxide precursor for the atomic layer deposition of aluminum oxide films

2020

For large-scale atomic layer deposition (ALD) of alumina, the most commonly used alkyl precursor trimethylaluminum poses safety issues due to its pyrophoric nature. In this work, the authors have investigated a liquid alkoxide, aluminum tri-sec-butoxide (ATSB), as a precursor for ALD deposition of alumina. ATSB is thermally stable and the liquid nature facilitates handling in a bubbler and potentially enables liquid injection toward upscaling. Both thermal and plasma enhanced ALD processes are investigated in a vacuum type reactor by using water, oxygen plasma, and water plasma as coreactants. All processes achieved ALD deposition at a growth rate of 1-1.4 angstrom/cycle for substrate tempe…

The Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor JAHA Down-Regulates pERK and Global DNA Methylation in MDA-MB231 Breast Cancer Cells

2015

The histone deacetylase inhibitor N-1-(ferrocenyl)-N-8-hydroxyoctanediamide (JAHA) down-regulates extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and its activated form in triple-negative MDA-MB231 breast cancer cells after 18 h and up to 30 h of treatment, and to a lesser extent AKT and phospho-AKT after 30 h and up to 48 h of treatment. Also, DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1), 3b and, to a lesser extent, 3a, downstream ERK targets, were down-regulated already at 18 h with an increase up to 48 h of exposure. Methylation-sensitive restriction arbitrarily-primed (MeSAP) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis confirmed the ability of JAHA to induce genome-wide DNA hypomethylation at 48 h of expos…

CY5 fluorescence measured with silicon photomultipliers

2014

This paper presents an efficient optical biosensor set up for a low-level light detection, using fluorescent dyes and a novel Si-based detector. Fluorescence emitted by a traditional fluorophore, CY5, widely used as optical label in DNA microarrays, was detected using a 25 pixels Silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), a device formed by avalanche diodes operating in Geiger mode, in parallel connections. We measured the fluorescence current in different deposition (fluorophore concentration; solvent; salt concentration) and operation (angle of analysis, optical laser power, device gain) conditions. The characterization of DNA samples labeled with CY5 is also reported to demonstrate the detector pot…

Role of photoactive layer morphology in high fill factor all-polymer bulk heterojunction solar cells

2011

We report on the realization of all-polymer solar cells based on blends of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) as a donor and poly{[N,N'-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl]-alt-5,5'-(2,2'-bithiophene)} (P(NDI2OD-T2)) as an acceptor. High fill factors are demonstrated for the first time in this class of devices suggesting high dissociation efficiency for the bounded electron-hole pairs and balanced electron and hole mobility along the thin films. The use of the high-mobility n-type P(NDI2OD-T2) polymer enables us to overcome one of the problems limiting the efficiency of all-polymer solar cells, resulting in fill factors comparable with those reported for …

Anomalous transport effects on switching currents of graphene-based Josephson junctions

2017

We explore the effect of noise on the ballistic graphene-based small Josephson junctions in the framework of the resistively and capacitively shunted model. We use the non-sinusoidal current-phase relation specific for graphene layers partially covered by superconducting electrodes. The noise induced escapes from the metastable states, when the external bias current is ramped, give the switching current distribution, i.e. the probability distribution of the passages to finite voltage from the superconducting state as a function of the bias current, that is the information more promptly available in the experiments. We consider a noise source that is a mixture of two different types of proce…

Real-Time 3D Face Acquisition Using Reconfigurable Hybrid Architecture

2007

Acquiring 3D data of human face is a general problem which can be applied in face recognition, virtual reality, and many other applications. It can be solved using stereovision. This technique consists in acquiring data in three dimensions from two cameras. The aim is to implement an algorithmic chain which makes it possible to obtain a three-dimensional space from two two-dimensional spaces: two images coming from the two cameras. Several implementations have already been considered. We propose a new simple real-time implementation based on a hybrid architecture (FPGA-DSP), allowing to consider an embedded and reconfigurable processing. Then we show our method which provides depth map of …

Noise reduction in asteroid imaging using a miniaturized spectral imager

2021

In October 2024, European Space Agency’s Hera mission will be launched, targeting the binary asteroid Didymos. Hera will host the Juventas and Milani CubeSats, the first CubeSats to orbit close to a small celestial body performing scientific and technological operations. The primary scientific payload of the Milani CubeSat is the SWIR, NIR, and VIS imaging spectrometer ASPECT. The Milani mission objectives include mapping the global composition and the characterization of the binary asteroid surface. Onboard data processing and evaluation steps will be applied due to the limited data budget for the downlink to Earth and to perform the technological demonstration of a novel semi-autonomous h…
