Electronic structure, lattice dynamics and thermodynamic stability of paramelaconite Cu4O3

2014

Abstract An ab initio study of the electronic structure, lattice dynamic and thermodynamic properties of paramelaconite Cu 4 O 3 is reported. The insulating, mixed-valence character of Cu 4 O 3 is elucidated by analyzing the band structure and the spin-orbital symmetry of the Cu-3 d hole states. Exchange coupling constants between Cu 2+ ions are computed which confirm the frustrated antiferromagnetism of the spin lattice. The lattice dynamics is studied from first principles and main features of the vibrational spectrum are assigned to the different chemical species Cu + , Cu 2+ and O. The thermodynamic stability of Cu 4 O 3 is investigated by calculating the free energy of the decompositio…

Metal-Insulator Transition of Solid Hydrogen by the Antisymmetric Shadow Wave Function

2016

We revisit the pressure-induced metal-insulator-transition of solid hydrogen by means of variational quantum Monte Carlo simulations based on the antisymmetric shadow wave function. In order to facilitate studying the electronic structure of large-scale fermionic systems, the shadow wave function formalism is extended by a series of technical improvements, such as a revised optimization method for the employed shadow wave function and an enhanced treatment of periodic systems with long-range interactions. It is found that the superior accuracy of the antisymmetric shadow wave function results in a significantly increased transition pressure.

Robust optical readout and characterization of nuclear spin transitions in nitrogen-vacancy ensembles in diamond

2019

Nuclear spin ensembles in diamond are promising candidates for quantum sensing applications, including rotation sensing. Here we perform a characterization of the optically detected nuclear-spin transitions associated with the 14N nuclear spin within diamond nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers. We observe nuclear-spin-dependent fluorescence with the contrast of optically detected 14N nuclear Rabi oscillations comparable to that of the NV electron spin. Using Ramsey spectroscopy, we investigate the temperature and magnetic-field dependence of the nuclear spin transitions in the 77.5-420 K and 350-675 G range, respectively. The nuclear quadrupole coupling constant Q was found to vary with temperatu…

Spin‐Chain‐Star Systems: Entangling Multiple Chains of Spin Qubits

2022

We consider spin-chain-star systems characterized by N-wise many-body interactions between the spins in each chain and the central one. We show that such systems can be exactly mapped into standard spin-star systems through unitary transformations. Such an approach allows the solution of the dynamic problem of an XX$X X$ spin-chain-star model and transparently shows the emergence of quantum correlations in the system, based on the idea of entanglement between chains.

W-like states of N uncoupled spins 1/2

2008

The exact dynamics of a disordered spin star system, describing a central spin coupled to N distinguishable and non interacting spins 1/2, is reported. Exploiting their interaction with the central single spin system, we present possible conditional schemes for the generation of W-like states, as well as of well-defined angular momentum states, of the N uncoupled spins. We provide in addition a way to estimate the coupling intensity between each of the N spins and the central one. Finally the feasibility of our procedure is briefly discussed.

Charmonium properties in hot quenched lattice QCD

2012

We study the properties of charmonium states at finite temperature in quenched QCD on large and fine isotropic lattices. We perform a detailed analysis of charmonium correlation and spectral functions both below and above $T_c$. Our analysis suggests that both S wave states ($J/\psi$ and $\eta_c$) and P wave states ($\chi_{c0}$ and $\chi_{c1}$) disappear already at about $1.5 T_c$. The charm diffusion coefficient is estimated through the Kubo formula and found to be compatible with zero below $T_c$ and approximately $1/\pi T$ at $1.5 T_c\lesssim T\lesssim 3 T_c$.

Incommensurate phases of a bosonic two-leg ladder under a flux

2016

A boson two--leg ladder in the presence of a synthetic magnetic flux is investigated by means of bosonization techniques and Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG). We follow the quantum phase transition from the commensurate Meissner to the incommensurate vortex phase with increasing flux at different fillings. When the applied flux is $\rho \pi$ and close to it, where $\rho$ is the filling per rung, we find a second incommensuration in the vortex state that affects physical observables such as the momentum distribution, the rung-rung correlation function and the spin-spin and charge-charge static structure factors.

Nonequilibrium critical scaling in quantum thermodynamics

2016

The emerging field of quantum thermodynamics is contributing important results and insights into archetypal many-body problems, including quantum phase transitions. Still, the question whether out-of-equilibrium quantities, such as fluctuations of work, exhibit critical scaling after a sudden quench in a closed system has remained elusive. Here, we take a novel approach to the problem by studying a quench across an impurity quantum critical point. By performing density matrix renormalization group computations on the two-impurity Kondo model, we are able to establish that the irreversible work produced in a quench exhibits finite-size scaling at quantum criticality. This scaling faithfully …

New state of matter: heavy-fermion systems, quantum spin liquids, quasicrystals, cold gases, and high temperature superconductors

2018

We report on a new state of matter manifested by strongly correlated Fermi systems including various heavy-fermion (HF) metals, two-dimensional quantum liquids such as $\rm ^3He$ films, certain quasicrystals, and systems behaving as quantum spin liquids. Generically, these systems can be viewed as HF systems or HF compounds, in that they exhibit typical behavior of HF metals. At zero temperature, such systems can experience a so-called fermion-condensation quantum phase transition (FCQPT). Combining analytical considerations with arguments based entirely on experimental grounds we argue and demonstrate that the class of HF systems is characterized by universal scaling behavior of their ther…
