Calcium in the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis: EMAS clinical guide

2017

Abstract Introduction Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a highly prevalent disease. Prevention through lifestyle measures includes an adequate calcium intake. Despite the guidance provided by scientific societies and governmental bodies worldwide, many issues remain unresolved. Aims To provide evidence regarding the impact of calcium intake on the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis and critically appraise current guidelines. Materials and methods Literature review and consensus of expert opinion. Results and conclusion The recommended daily intake of calcium varies between 700 and 1200 mg of elemental calcium, depending on the endorsing source. Although calcium can be derived either fro…

Characterization of Chlorolignins in Bleached Kraft Pulp Mill Effluents Using Elemental Analysis and Fingerprinting by CuO Oxidation And Hplc

1994

Abstract Elemental analyses and chemical degradation techniques were applied to characterize lignin compounds in different stages of the chlorine bleaching process and in total mill effluent. Ultrafiltration was used for separation of chlorolignins into three nominal molecular weight fractions. Alkaline CuO oxidation products were analyzed by HPLC with diode array detection. Major compounds were identified by reference to authentic compounds. For comparison, native lignins (MWL), kraft lignins, and humic substances were studied as well. The oxygen, carbon and organic chlorine contents were closely similar in the various mill samples and their fractions. In all mill samples, vanillin and 6-c…

Comparison of LIBS and micro-XRF measurements on bronze alloys for monitoring plasma effects

2011

The laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique is often used as atomic spectroscopic technique for elemental analysis of materials. However, it presents some drawbacks that make an accurate quantitative analysis difficult. Since the plasma properties, such as spatial inhomogeneity and plume stoichiometry strongly depend on the experimental conditions, the measurements are less reproducible. In order to evaluate the measurement fluctuations, we propose to use the more established micro X-Ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) technique for validating LIBS data. In particular, the quantitative data, obtained by varying the laser fluence, the shot numbers and the temporal acquisition parameters, …

On-Line and In-Situ Identification of Air Pollution

2002

The elemental, iron-phase, and oxidation state analysis of urban aerosol samples, collected from different sites in Vitoria metropolitan region, ES, Brazil, was carried out using Mossbauer (MB) Spectroscopy (MBS) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) techniques. A portable XRF spectrometer for elemental analysis from Na to Fe, and the miniaturized MB spectrometer MIMOS-II have been installed together using a 100 mCi 57 Co(Rh) MB source for XRF excitation. Both measurements can be performed simultaneously. For continuous and fast characterization purposes a software package was developed for Mossbauer and XRF analysis. The software is based on genetic algorithm, fuzzy logic and artificial neural netw…

In situ Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy as a tool to discriminate volcanic rocks and magmatic series, Iceland.

2015

7 pages; International audience; This study evaluates the potentialities of a lab-made pLIBS (portable Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) to sort volcanic rocks belonging to various magmatic series. An in-situ chemical analysis of 19 atomic lines, including Al, Ba, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Na, Si, Sr and Ti, from 21 sampled rocks was performed during a field exploration in Iceland. Iceland was chosen both for the various typologies of volcanic rocks and the rugged conditions in the field in order to test the sturdiness of the pLIPS. Elemental compositions were also measured using laboratory ICP-AES measurements on the same samples. Based on these latter results, which can be used to ident…

The first authenticated example of triorganotin(IV) perchlorate complexes of some heterocyclic bases

1993

Abstract A convenient method is reported for the synthesis of some novel complexes of composition (R 3 SnL 2 ) ClO 4 where L represents pyridine, γ-picoline, 2,2′-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline; and R  n Bu or Ph. All of the new ionic complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, infrared, multinuclear nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H, 13 C and 119 Sn) and 119 Sn Mossbauer spectroscopies. The complexes of composition (R 3 SnL 2 )ClO 4 exist both in solution and in the solid state with trans -trigonal bipyramidal structure where the R-groups occupy the equatorial positions while the ligands are in the axial position.

Copper(II) Complexes with Derivatives of Barbiturate

1984

Abstract NaCuL2(OH).1,5H2O, KCuP2(OH).1H2O, Na2CuL4 and K2CuP4-8H2O (HL=Phenobarbitone and HP=Methyl Phenobarbitone) were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR and electronic spectral data and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The ESR spectra show and octahedral environment for the Cu(II) ion.

Monitoring the carburization of molybdenum bimetallic nitrides and oxynitrides with CH4/H2/Ar mixtures: identification of a new carbonitride.

2008

A new carbonitride Ni2Mo3(CxNy) has been synthesized by temperature-programmed carburization of the Ni2Mo3N precursor with a CH4/H2/Ar gas mixture at 923 K. This compound has been characterized by X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, Auger electron spectroscopy, laser Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. Ni2Mo3(CxNy) crystallizes in the cubic space group P4(1)32, with a lattice parameter of a=6.64575(3) A, corresponding to the unusual filled beta-Mn structure. Its formation occurs by partial substitution of N by C via a topotactic and pseudomorphic reaction and its stability in air is higher that of Ni2Mo3N. A two-phase mixture wi…

Elemental composition of sediments from a former silver mine in Freiberg/East Germany

1999

Abstract We have determined the contents of 48 elements in 11 representative sediments from a former Ag-mine in Freiberg/Sachsen. As analytical method the instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) was used without chemical preconcentration. Strongly varying compositions were observed for both the main and trace elements. Of particular interest were the high lanthanide and Th/U contents in these sediments.

The Diagnosis of Disease by Element Analysis

1988

The elemental composition of the human body images in principle the elements of the periodic system. In the literature, about 80 elements are reported to occur in the human body and the number is expected to increase by the introduction of methods more sensitive in detection. The elemental composition in reference man as published (1) is summarized in tab. 1. From the major elements in reference man, the determination of the elements nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chlorine and magnesium are of importance for the diagnosis of diseases. The importance of the element determination for the diagnosis of diseases is also documented by the numbers of element determinations done …
