Indirect chronology method employing rare earth elements to identify Sagunto Castle mortar construction periods
2017
A novel indirect chronology method has been developed to identify Sagunto Castle construction periods. The method is based on the use of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine rare earth elements (REE) and other trace elements in mortars. Additionally, a no destructive geochemical analysis based on X-ray fluorescence (XRF) was employed for major elements determination. Collected chemical data were processed through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to highlight any differences among the mortars belonging to different buildings and construction periods. The results show that PCA analysis permits to discriminate construction periods according to mortar sample REE …
Improved Method for Orbital Elements Differential Correction.
1990
As was pointed out by IAU in 1976, an important problem in fundamental astronomy is the improvement of the vernal equinox and equator positions. To this aim, it is necessary to know the accurate values of minor planets orbital elements. The classical methods of orbital elements differential corrections are based on linking the observations at different epochs considering equal derivatives respect to the initial and osculating elements. In this paper we present an improved method in which the least squares matrix coefficients is calculated from the integration of the Lagrange planetary equations and its derivatives.
High Resolution X-ray Spectroscopy of T Tauri Stars in the Taurus-Auriga Complex
2006
Differences have been reported between the X-ray emission of accreting and non-accreting stars. Some observations have suggested that accretion shocks could be responsible for part of the X-ray emission in Classical T Tauri stars (CTTS). We present high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of nine pre-main sequence stars in order to test the proposed spectroscopic differences between accreting and non-accreting pre-main sequence stars. We use X-ray spectroscopy from the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometers and the EPIC instruments. We interpret the spectra using optically thin thermal models with variable abundances, together with an absorption column density. For BP Tau and AB Aur we deriv…
Mobile genetic element proliferation and gene inactivation impact over the genome structure and metabolic capabilities of Sodalis glossinidius, the s…
2010
Abstract Background Genome reduction is a common evolutionary process in symbiotic and pathogenic bacteria. This process has been extensively characterized in bacterial endosymbionts of insects, where primary mutualistic bacteria represent the most extreme cases of genome reduction consequence of a massive process of gene inactivation and loss during their evolution from free-living ancestors. Sodalis glossinidius, the secondary endosymbiont of tsetse flies, contains one of the few complete genomes of bacteria at the very beginning of the symbiotic association, allowing to evaluate the relative impact of mobile genetic element proliferation and gene inactivation over the structure and funct…
Poplar rotation coppice at a trace element-contaminated phytomanagement site: A 10-year study revealing biomass production, element export and impact…
2019
Abstract Growing lignocellulosic crops on marginal lands could compose a substantial proportion of future energy resources. The potential of poplar was explored, by devising a field trial of two hectares in 2007 in a metal-contaminated site to quantify the genotypic variation in the growth traits of 14 poplar genotypes grown in short-rotation coppice and to assess element transfer and export by individual genotypes. Our data led us to conclusions about the genotypic variations in poplar growth on a moderately contaminated site, with the Vesten genotype being the most productive. This genotype also accumulated the least amounts of trace elements, whereas the Trichobel genotype accumulated up…
Context-dependent Pax-5 repression of a PU.1/NF-κB regulated reporter gene in B lineage cells
2001
Enhancers located in the 3' end of the locus in part regulate immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) gene expression. One of these enhancers, HS 1,2, is developmentally regulated by DNA binding proteins like NF-kappaB, Pax-5 and the protein complex NF-alphaP in B lineage cells. Here we report that NF-alphaP is the ets protein PU.1. A glutathione-S-transferase (GST)-pulldown assay demonstrated that PU.1 can physically interact with NF-kappaB in solution. Experiments in COS cells showed that PU.1 and NF-kappaB (p50/c-Rel) can activate transcription of an enhancer linked reporter gene. The paired domain protein Pax-5 has previously been shown to repress enhancer-dependent transcription. Additional c…
Uso della moneta presso gli Indigeni della Sicilia centro-meridionale
2011
The study of the coins found in the indigenous settlements of Caltanissetta province and the analysis of the related contexts of provenance, have highlighted that in these centers, still in the 4th century BC, the coin was considered a worthless piece of metal and that other bronze objects were used as medium of exchange. It is remarkable the discovery in this territory of three “mixed” hoards, including not only coins, but also of bronze scraps and small fragmentary objects. In this regard, the presence in this area of the so-called "monetary barbarizations" is interesting. They are rare specimens whose stylistic aspect, typological association, technical and, sometimes, even weight elemen…

Toxic mineral elements in Mytilus galloprovincialis from Sicilian coasts (Southern Italy)
2019
We assessed the relationship between V, Cr, Mn, Hg, As, Cd, Sn, Sb and Pb concentrations in Mytilus galloprovincialis samples from the coasts of Sicily and the expression of metallothioneins. Toxic mineral elements assessment was carried out by A.A. Spectrometry and ICP-MS. The metallothioneins expression was performed by q-PCR method. Low metals' levels were found in the mussel samples examined, in comparison with what was reported in literature. The highest mean values of toxic mineral elements were found in Gela (Cr 0.178 +/- 0.03 mg/Kg, Mn 4.325 +/- 0.012 mg/Kg, As 3.706 +/- 0.009 mg/Kg, Sn 0.148 +/- 0.014 mg/Kg, Sb 0.009 +/- 0.004 mg/Kg e Pb 0.364 +/- 0.01 mg/Kg). Significant levels of…
