Access-Awareness-Agency (AAA) Model of Music-Based Social-Emotional Competence (MuSEC)

2019

Social–emotional competence (SEC) is a set of psychological resources, highly relevant for adaptive growth and wellbeing. Music has been argued to support social–emotional skills, yet there is little theoretical consensus about the underlying impact mechanisms and the special nature of music as a medium for SEC. This article presents a theoretical model of music-based SEC that combines research from general SEC models with music-specific literature from music psychology, music education, music therapy, and music for health and wellbeing. The proposed access-awareness-agency (AAA) model defines music-based social–emotional competence (MuSEC) as interplay of embodied access, reflective awaren…

The development of teachers’ responses to challenging situations during interaction training

2014

The qualitative changes in teachers’ responses in challenging situations were analysed during a four-day Teacher Effectiveness Training (TET) course, which aimed at improving teachers’ interpersonal dynamics with pupils, parents and colleagues. The participants were 21 teachers from one elementary and 23 teachers from one secondary school attending a TET course in Finland. Qualitative abductive content analysis was used to classify the data. Frequencies based on this analysis were also looked at. After TET the teachers described the behaviour of their pupils and expressed their feelings and the actual consequences of that behaviour, instead of using generalized labels and subjective interpr…

Using the Storytelling Method to Hear Children’s Perspectives and Promote Their Social-Emotional Competence

2019

This study investigated the use of a playful, narrative, vignette-based method, called Story Magician’s Play Time (SMPT), in supporting children’s social-emotional reasoning and in helping children practice their social skills. We set out to examine (a) in what ways children use SMPT sessions to explore social interaction situations and to practice social skills, and (b) what story content and narrative play behavior during the SMPT sessions reveal about the social-emotional competence of children, in terms of acquisition and performance skills. The data were collected during SMPT storytelling sessions where 5- to 6-year-old children narrated stories of familiar but challenging daily situa…

It is a train-the-trainers program that unfolds in five steps, respectively, aimed at stimulating teachers and students to: (1) develop emotional literacy; (2) create emotionally inclusive environments; (3) build tools, materials and methods for emotionally inclusive classes; (4) develop didactic method mediated by emotions; (5) become ambassadors of the metaemotional intelligence at school and beyond. Implementation of a social and emotional learning programme in physical education : a teacher's action research study

2013

The importance of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) has been widely studied and its impact on the holistic development of youth is indisputable. The teaching of social and emotional skills through Physical Education (PE) is a pertinent context though it remains an under-explored domain. This study aims to address the gap by offering insights into the educational process of implementing a socio-emotional skills intervention programme in PE, encompassing socio-emotional competencies of impulse control, effective communication, empathy and behaviour management. The study was conducted using a qualitative action research case study approach. Data was collected from researcher’s journal as wel…

From social and emotional learning in adolescence to emotional-skill training in teachers = Desde la educación socio-emocional en adolescencia al en…

2019

The idea of introducing social and emotional learning in educational settings is based on the assumption that emotions are an essential element of school life. Emotional competencies are conducive to student learning and well-being, in addition to conveying emotional resources for teachers and educators. The development of such abilities is a prerequisite for students and teachers to engage in productive and enjoyable classroom dynamics. Indeed, well-developed emotional competence enhances students’ psychological adjustment, self-esteem, adaptive coping with stress at school and academic success. However, engaging in disruptive behaviors and school violence (bullying) may be attributed to a…

Significant in life : Core learning outcomes of a social and emotional course in physical education teacher education

2022

The purpose of the study is to explore physical education (PE) students’ social and emotional learning (SEL) and the meaningful learning experiences during the SEL course. In the teaching profession, understanding SEL is important because the guidance of learning and group dynamics is essentially an interactive social process. Further, previous research shows that focusing on socioemotional skills promotes students’ academic achievement. Teachers’ SEL skills can be developed by training. In PE teacher education annually, 60 first-year-students participate in a 20-hours SEL skills course based on Gordon’s interaction model and SEL concepts. The course consists of practising SEL skills such a…

The Emotion Detectives Game: Supporting the Social-emotional Competence of Young Children

2017

The potential of digital games to enhance learning in different areas of child development has drawn increasing interest amid growing concern about children’s emotional well-being, social-emotional difficulties, and problem behaviors alongside diminishing economic resources for intervention and habilitation. However, digital games designed to promote social-emotional competence are surprisingly scarce. In this chapter, we explore children’s use of the digital game Emotion Detectives (ED), designed to promote children’s acquisition of emotional knowledge skills (e.g., recognizing, appreciating, and understanding emotions and their expressions), prosocial behaviors (e.g., helping, sharing, co…
