Serum inhibin A, inhibin B, pro-alphaC, and activin A levels in women with idiopathic premature ovarian failure.

Serum inhibin A, inhibin B, pro-alphaC, and activin A levels in 30 women with idiopathic premature ovarian failure (POF), 30 postmenopausal women, and 30 age-matched fertile women were determined. Women with POF showed low levels of inhibin A and inhibin B, but not of activin A, whereas the levels of pro-alphaC were significantly higher than in postmenopausal women. Thus, the circulating level of pro-alphaC could be a marker for assessing residual ovarian function in women with POF.

Multipotential nestin and Isl-1 positive mesenchymal stem cells isolated from human pancreatic islets.

Mesenchymal cells in the developing pancreas express the neural stem cell marker nestin and the transcription factor islet-1 (Isl-1). Using defined culture conditions we isolated on a single cell basis nestin producing cells from human pancreatic islets. These cells were immortalized with lentiviral vectors coding for telomerase and mBmi. They are positive for Isl-1 and nestin and have the potential to adopt a pancreatic endocrine phenotype with expression of critical transcription factors including Ipf-1, Isl-1, Ngn-3, Pax4, Pax6, Nkx2.2, and Nkx6.1 as well as the islet hormones insulin, glucagon, and somatostatin. Changes in the motility patterns of spermatozoa from the rabbit epididymis as assessed by computer-aided sperm motion analysis

Sperm maturation in the epididymis includes changes in their potential for motility that enables spermatozoa to reach the egg and penetrate its investments. The motility characteristics of spermatozoa from the testis, the epididymis, and vas deferens of the rabbit were investigated by computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA). Various forms of motility were displayed by sperm from different regions of the epididymis released into incubation medium. Testicular sperm were motile, although nonprogressive. An ability to predict forthcoming changes in environmental conditions and get prepared for them in advance is crucial for the survival and reproduction of organisms living in a seasonally changing environment. We have studied the possible involvement of circadian oscillator(s) in the photoperiodic timer controlling seasonal responses by tracing Drosophila montana females' diapause induction in constant darkness and in a classical Nanda-Hamner experiment. Electrostatically Driven Complexation of Liposomes with a Star-Shaped Polyelectrolyte to Low-Toxicity Multi-Liposomal Assemblies

Anionic liposomes are electrostatically complexed to a star-shaped cationic polyelectrolyte. Upon complexation, the liposomes retain their integrity and the resulting liposome-star complexes do not dissociate in a physiological solution with 0.15 M NaCl. This provides a multi-liposomal container for possible use as a high-capacity carrier.

Localization and interactions of melatonin in dry cholesterol/lecithin mixed reversed micelles used as cell membrane models

The state of melatonin confined in dry cholesterol/lecithin mixed reversed micelles dispersed in CCl4 was investigated using 1H-NMR and FT-IR spectroscopies as a function of the melatonin to lecithin molar ratio (R(MLT)) and of the cholesterol to lecithin molar ratio (R(CHL)). An analysis of experimental results leads to the hypothesis that, independent of R(MLT) and as a consequence of anisotropic melatonin/lecithin, melatonin/cholesterol and cholesterol/lecithin interactions, melatonin is totally solubilized in reversed micelles. Magnetic transition metal complexes of tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivatives

We have prepared and characterized the transition metal complexes of two different TTF derivatives. We have oxidized the different complexes with electrooxidation and chemical oxidation techniques and the results are discussed. The magnetic properties of the complexes have been studied. TTF-carboxylate chelates are not stable enough, but thioether-TTF shows promising charge transfer salts.

Their tunable composition and morphology confer multimodal and versatile capabilities for use as contrast agents and drug carriers in future medicine. Segregation in Drying Binary Colloidal Droplets

When a colloidal suspension droplet evaporates from a solid surface, it leaves a characteristic deposit in the contact region. These deposits are common and important for many applications in printing, coating, or washing. By the use of superamphiphobic surfaces as a substrate, the contact area can be reduced so that evaporation is almost radially symmetric. While drying, the droplets maintain a nearly perfect spherical shape. Here, we exploit this phenomenon to fabricate supraparticles from bidisperse colloidal aqueous suspensions. Functional and conformational properties of the exclusive C-domain from the Arabidopsis copper chaperone (CCH)

The Arabidopsis thaliana copper chaperone (CCH) is a small copper binding protein involved in copper trafficking. When compared to homologues from other eukaryotes, CCH has two different domains; the conserved N-domain and the plant-exclusive C-domain, a C-terminal extension with an unusual amino-acid composition. In order to characterize this extra C-domain, the CCH protein, the N-domain and the C-domain were all expressed separately in heterologous systems.
