The European Green Deal: New Challenges for the Economic Feasibility of Energy Retrofit at District Scale
2020
The European Green Deal proposes an epochal change in the European society by transforming environmental and climatic problems into opportunities and making sustainable and fair the European Union economic system. Radical changes will also concern urban redevelopment and energy efficiency measures in order to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve these objectives, rules and standards, as well as financial resources and assessment tools, are needed to support both urban planning and public decision process. This paper aims to analyze the existing European programs that are applied in some European smart cities, as they constitute a valuable source of information for the developm…
An Electronic Emulator of Combined Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal Systems
2010
An emulator of combined Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal (CPS) systems is presented. In order to carry out early testing on the design of such systems, a - microcontrolled based - hardware board has been designed, implemented and tested. This emulator is able run several typical daily solar irradiation patterns as a function of the seasons and a complete solar thermal and photovoltaic model that depends on a very flexible set of parameters characterizing the real CPS behaviour. By properly varying these parameters many different CPS models can easily be created and tailored to the energy performance needed for a predefined target application. Beside these functionalities, the CPS emulator is …
Agroalimentare e sviluppo economico sostenibile: energia, efficienza energetica, ambiente e cibo
2013
Integration of green roofs&walls in urban areas
2020
Growing urbanization is associated with the emergence of environmental problems, such as the reduction of natural resources, the atmosphere pollution and the increase of the heat islands phenomenon in cities. The integration of vegetation in the urban areas, through the creation of green hanging systems, represents a possible solution to improve the energy sustainability of buildings, to combat meteoric excesses, to improve stormwater management and to reduce pollutant levels. These energy and environmental benefits are related to the properties of evapotranspiration, shading and thermal insulation of the vegetation. The work reports the results of the main studies concerning the use of han…
Industrial waste heat: Estimation of the technically available resource in the EU per industrial sector, temperature level and country
2018
Abstract Industrial waste heat is examined in EU countries, focusing on the amount that can be recovered and exploited, referred to as technical potential of waste heat. An alternative methodology is proposed here, which is based on waste heat fractions derived from a detailed study of the UK industry from the period 2000–2003. These fractions express the part of heat consumption that is wasted and is possible to be recovered. The waste heat fractions have been calculated in this work for each main industrial sector and temperature level. The methodology initially includes the adjustment of waste heat fractions from each industrial sector from the UK industry to the conditions of the differ…
ECAR: an Energy/Channel Aware Routing Protocol For Cooperative Wireless Sensor Networks
2011
International audience; The proliferation of low power networks like Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) rose up new challenges. Power conservation and channel quality become the most important parameters. Obviously, hop count based routing protocols are no more adapted to such networks having power limitations and channel problems. Several alternatives were suggested to cope with these constraints. In MAC layer for example, cooperative protocols were designed to enhance the channel use: the neighbor nodes help the source to retransmit its packets. However, if the path proposed by the routing protocol contains poor channels, the cooperative communications will not save all the packets. Therefore…
Electric energy consumption analysis of SPIF processes
2013
Manufacturing processes, as used for discrete part manufacturing, are responsible for a substantial part of the environmental impact of products, but are still poorly documented in terms of environmental footprint. A thorough analysis on the causes affecting the environmental impact in metal forming processes, especially the innovative but very energy intensive sheet metal forming technologies required to form light-weight products, is nowadays necessary. Therefore, this paper presents an energy consumption analysis, including a power and time study, of Single Point Incremental Forming (SPIF) processes. First, the influence of the most relevant process parameters (e.g. feed rate, step down)…
Energy Efficient Resource Allocation for Wireless Power Transfer Enabled Collaborative Mobile Clouds
2016
In order to fully enjoy high rate broadband multimedia services, prolonging the battery lifetime of user equipment is critical for mobile users, especially for smartphone users. In this paper, the problem of distributing cellular data via a wireless power transfer enabled collaborative mobile cloud (WeCMC) in an energy efficient manner is investigated. WeCMC is formed by a group of users who have both functionalities of information decoding and energy harvesting, and are interested for cooperating in downloading content from the operators. Through device-to-device communications, the users inside WeCMC are able to cooperate during the downloading procedure and offload data from the base sta…
Energy Performance and Indoor Comfort of a 1930s Italian School Building: A case study
2021
Reducing energy consumption in the building tertiary sector, which accounts for a big share of the total energy use (and related CO 2 emissions) at European and Italian level, represent a strong element of safety for the EU-28. On the other hand, it is important to improve the, often overlooked, indoor comfort conditions of Italian schools since they have a significant impact on the well-being, productivity, health and safety of their occupants. Thus, it is appropriate to take into account the combination of both needs, also in light of the climate change scenario, in order to identify adequate improvement measures and justify such economic investment. This paper brings a contribution to th…
BRAZILIAN SOCIAL HOUSING POLICY: TOWARD A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
2013
In the last decade, Brazil passed through several political and economic reforms that led to significant social changes, among which the reduction of the levels of inequality and extreme poverty. Nowadays considered one of the emerging economies, the country seeks to solidify its position through wide strategies aimed to propose decisive initiatives for a balanced social development, which are deeply affecting local architecture and urban planning. In this scenario social housing design has become, since the last decade, the mirror of a national policy that is implementing robust strategies to achieve high levels of growth. The paper provides an overview of the upgrades achieved in the fiel…
