Raman and nuclear magnetic resonance investigation of alkali metal vapor interaction with alkene-based anti-relaxation coating.
2016
The use of anti-relaxation coatings in alkali vapor cells yields substantial performance improvements by reducing the probability of spin relaxation in wall collisions by several orders of magnitude. Some of the most effective anti-relaxation coating materials are alpha-olefins, which (as in the case of more traditional paraffin coatings) must undergo a curing period after cell manufacturing in order to achieve the desired behavior. Until now, however, it has been unclear what physicochemical processes occur during cell curing, and how they may affect relevant cell properties. We present the results of nondestructive Raman-spectroscopy and magnetic-resonance investigations of the influence …
Thermogalvanic corrosion of Alloy 31 in different heavy brine LiBr solutions
2012
Thermogalvanic corrosion generated between two electrodes of Alloy 31, a highly-alloyed austenitic stainless steel (UNS N08031), has been investigated imposing different temperature gradients in three deaerated LiBr solutions, under open circuit conditions by using a zero-resistance ammeter (ZRA). Besides EIS spectra were acquired in order to explain the obtained results. On the whole, cold Alloy 31 electrodes were anodic to hot Alloy 31 electrodes, since an increase in temperature favoured the cathodic behaviour of the hot electrode. Thermogalvanic corrosion of Alloy 31 in the LiBr solutions studied was not severe, although it negatively affects the corrosion resistance of the cold anode. …

Halloysite Nanotubes and Metal Corrosion Inhibitors: A Computational and Experimental Study
2019
Halloysite nanotubes are widely used as a substrate for the controlled release of various types of molecules in an increasing number of applications. In this work, the interactions of halloysite silicic and aluminic surfaces with corrosion inhibitor compounds, such as benzotriazole, 8-hydroxyquinoline, 2-mercaptobenzimidazole, and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, were investigated from a computational point of view. Two new halloysite compounds with salicylaldoxime and quinaldic acid were designed. Here we propose their synthesis, evaluate amounts of loading, and analyze the adsorption behavior.

SnO2 : Sb - A new material for high-temperature MEMS heater applications: Performance and limitations
2007
MEMS micro heater devices capable of long-term operation at temperatures up to 1000 degrees C are presented. The enhanced long-term stability has been achieved by employing antimony-doped tin oxide (SnO2:Sb) as a substitute for the conventionally used noble metal heater resistors. A detailed investigation of its high-temperature stability reveals that degradation is caused by out-diffusion of Sb impurities from the SnO2 film. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Eddy-Current Imaging with Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers in Diamond
2018
We demonstrate microwave-free eddy-current imaging using nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. By detecting the eddy-current induced magnetic field of conductive samples, we can distinguish between different materials and shapes and identify structural defects. Our technique allows for the discrimination of different materials according to their conductivity. The sensitivity of the measurements is calculated as 8$\times 10 ^{5}$\,S/m\,$\sqrt[]{\textrm{Hz}}$ at 3.5\,MHz, for a cylindrical sample with radius $r_0$\,=\,1\,mm and height $h$\,=\,0.1\,mm (volume $\sim$\,0.3\,mm$^3$), at a distance of 0.5\,mm. In comparison with existing technologies, the diamond-based device exhibits a superior ba…
High-Mobility, Wet-Transferred Graphene Grown by Chemical Vapor Deposition
2019
We report high room-temperature mobility in single layer graphene grown by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) after wet transfer on SiO$_2$ and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) encapsulation. By removing contaminations trapped at the interfaces between single-crystal graphene and hBN, we achieve mobilities up to$\sim70000cm^2 V^{-1} s^{-1}$ at room temperature and$\sim120000cm^2 V^{-1} s^{-1}$ at 9K. These are over twice those of previous wet transferred graphene and comparable to samples prepared by dry transfer. We also investigate the combined approach of thermal annealing and encapsulation in polycrystalline graphene, achieving room temperature mobilities$\sim30000 cm^2 V^{-1} s^{-1}$. These …
Optically Enhanced Electric Field Sensing Using Nitrogen-Vacancy Ensembles
2021
Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have shown promise as inherently localized electric-field sensors, capable of detecting individual charges with nanometer resolution. Working with NV ensembles, we demonstrate that a detailed understanding of the internal electric field environment enables enhanced sensitivity in the detection of external electric fields. We follow this logic along two complementary paths. First, using excitation tuned near the NV's zero-phonon line, we perform optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures in order to precisely measure the NV center's excited-state susceptibility to electric fields. In doing so, we demonstrate th…
Friction stir welding of lap joints: Influence of process parameters on the metallurgical and mechanical properties
2009
Abstract Aluminum alloys are widely used in the aircraft industries even if such materials present lower ductility with respect to steels, anisotropy phenomena and, more important, they are often “difficult” to be welded or even “non-weldable”. In the last years the friction stir welding process (FSW) was proposed and applied in order to get good mechanical and technological performances of the joints. In this paper, an experimental and numerical investigation on the lap joining of AA2198-T4 aluminum alloy blanks by FSW is presented. In particular the joints strength and metallurgical properties are investigated by varying the joint configuration and the tool geometry and rotational speed. …
