Atomic-resolution imaging of clean and hydrogen-terminated C(100)-(2×1)diamond surfaces using noncontact AFM
2010
Received 22 April 2010; published 14 May 2010High-purity, type IIa diamond is investigated by noncontact atomic force microscopy NC-AFM .Wepresent atomic-resolution images of both the electrically conducting hydrogen-terminated C 100 - 2 1 :Hsurface and the insulating C 100 - 2 1 surface. For the hydrogen-terminated surface, a nearly square unitcell is imaged. In contrast to previous scanning tunneling microscopy experiments, NC-AFM imaging allowsboth hydrogen atoms within the unit cell to be resolved individually, indicating a symmetric dimer alignment.Upon removing the surface hydrogen, the diamond sample becomes insulating. We present atomic-resolutionimages, revealing individual C-C dim…
Modeling of the hydrogen sorption kinetics in an AB2 laves type metal hydride alloy
2021
Abstract Hydrides of the AB2 Laves type alloys (A=Zr, Ti; B = transition metal – Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Cr, V) have been extensively studied as materials for the storage of gaseous hydrogen. They contain up to 4 H atoms/formula unit AB2, thus achieving reversible H storage capacities in the range between 1.5 and 2.0 wt% H and offering high rates of hydrogen charge and discharge, thus making them suitable for designing efficient hydrogen stores operating at ambient conditions. In the present study, we performed an experimental study and modeling of the thermodynamics and the kinetics of interaction in the AB2-hydrogen system. The experimental data was collected by studying a model alloy with a comp…
Hydrogen-doped cubic diamond and the crystal structure of n-diamond
2011
To understand the crystal structure of n-diamond, a hydrogen-doped (H-doped) diamond model has been investigated using first principles calculations. In particular, hydrogen concentration dependent elastic constants and lattice parameters for the H-doped diamond have been analyzed. Our results indicate that when the hydrogen concentration is less than 19 at.%, the H-doped diamond is mechanically stable. When the hydrogen concentration is about 4 at.%, the optimized lattice parameter, simulated XRD pattern and electronic properties for the H-doped diamond all agree well with the corresponding experimental values of n-diamond. The results imply that the n-diamond is likely to be an H-doped di…
Study of the Hydrogen Embrittlement Sensitivity of an X4CrNiMo 16.5.1 Stainless Steel and the Associated Electron Beam Weld
2015
X4CrNiMo 16.5.1 steel (commercial name APX4) is a low carbon martensitic stainless steel known for its remarkable mechanical characteristics and its good resistance to corrosion. The use of APX4 in the manufacture of high pressure gas vessels requires a thorough understanding of its resistance to Hydrogen Embrittlement (HE) as the gas can contain traces of hydrogen, and martensitic steels, and their welds, are generally very sensitive to HE. This paper deals with the first part of this study, involving the characterization of the microstructure and the mechanical properties of each zone of the electron beam weld (melted zone and four different heat affected zones), and the investigation of …
Lignocellulosic fillers and graphene nanoplatelets as hybrid reinforcement for polylactic acid: Effect on mechanical properties and degradability
2020
Abstract This work investigates the effect of adding relatively low amounts of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) to a biocomposite based on polylactic acid (PLA) and a lignocellulosic filler achieved by grinding Posidonia Oceanica leaves (Posidonia flour, PF). The ternary composites were prepared by melt extrusion and characterized from a morphological and mechanical point of view. Furthermore, hydrolytic degradation tests were performed under acidic, neutral and alkaline environment up to 900 h. Density measurements enabled to assess the degree of intraphase, i.e. the capability of polymer macromolecules to enter the voids of PF and a modified Halpin-Tsai model was presented and used to fit exp…
Dual Ni/Ni-Co electrodeposited coatings for improved erosion-corrosion behaviour
2019
Abstract Industrial applications of hydrophobic metallic coatings are limited to durability of their surface structures against detrimental effects of the surrounding environments. In the present research, the life-long of the hierarchical structure of hydrophobic nickel coating in an erosive-corrosive solution was investigated. The effect of alloying with cobalt on strengthening the hierarchical structures was also investigated. In this regard, highly hydrophobic Ni/Ni, Ni-Co/Ni-Co, dual Ni/Ni-Co and dual Ni-Co/Ni coatings with rough hierarchical structures were electrodeposited. In situ electrochemical measurements were performed to investigate changes in corrosion resistance and hydropho…

Frequency-Downconversion Stability of PMMA Coatings in Hybrid White Light-Emitting Diodes
2015
We report on the properties of a poly(methyl methacrylate)-based coating used as a host for an organic dye in hybrid white light-emitting diodes. The device is composed by a pump source, which is a standard inorganic GaN/InGaN blue light-emitting diode (LED) emitting at around 450 nm, and a spin-coated conversion layer making use of Lumogen® F Yellow 083. Under prolonged irradiation, the coating exhibits significant bleaching, thus degrading the color rendering performance of the LED. We present experimental results that confirm that the local temperature rise of the operating diode does not affect the conversion layer. It is also proven that, during the test, the photostability of the orga…
Characterisation and radiolysis of modified lithium orthosilicate pebbles with noble metal impurities
2017
Modified lithium orthosilicate (Li4SiO4) pebbles with additions of titanium dioxide (TiO2) are suggested as an alternative tritium breeding ceramic for the European solid breeder test blanket module. The noble metals – platinum (Pt), gold (Au) and rhodium (Rh), can be introduced into the modified Li4SiO4 pebbles during the melt-based process, due to the corrosion of Pt-Rh and Pt-Au alloy crucible components. In this study, the surface microstructure, chemical and phase composition of the modified Li4SiO4 pebbles with different contents of the noble metals was analysed. The influence of the noble metals on the radiolysis was evaluated after irradiation with accelerated electrons (E = 5 MeV),…
Synthesis highly active platinum tri-metallic electrocatalysts using "one-step" organometallic chemical vapour deposition technique for methanol oxid…
2012
A simple solvent free method for the synthesis of tri-metallic platinum electrocatalysts on carbon nanotubes is presented. By investigating the platinum alloy electrocatalysts, it was showed that the additional metals of platinum alloys could reduce the metal particle sizes and produce larger chemical-active surface area, as well as the higher methanol oxidation activity of the catalysts. The organometallic chemical vapour deposition method was successfully applied to produce multiple samples of PtRuFe, PtRuCu and PtRuV. The electrocatalysts were characterized by ICP, XRD, HRTEM and the catalytic activity was determined by cyclic voltammetry (CV).
